The sum of two numbers is 54. If three times the smaller number exceeds twice the larger number by 6, find the difference between the two numbers.

Let the smaller and larger numbers be s and l with s+l=54 and 3s-2l=6. Solving simultaneously gives s=22.8 and l=31.2, so their difference is 31.2-22.8 = 8.4.
