Fractions to decimals and recurring decimals

Know 1/2 to 1/20 as decimals, spot the cyclic patterns of 1/7, 1/13, 1/19, and convert recurring decimals to fractions.

When to use it · कब उपयोग करें

Percentage, ratio and simplification questions where a fraction like 3/7 or 5/13 appears, and "0.333…" or "0.4̄5̄" conversions.

The method · विधि

  1. The 142857 family (sevenths) · 142857

    1/7 = 0.142857 repeating. Every other seventh uses the same six digits in the same cycle, starting at a different point: 2/7 = 0.285714, 3/7 = 0.428571, 4/7 = 0.571428, 5/7 = 0.714285, 6/7 = 0.857142. Learn 1/7 and the order of the cycle.

  2. Recurring decimal to fraction ·

    Pure repeating, 0.ab̄ with block length k: block ÷ (10^k − 1). 0.3̄ = 3/9 = 1/3; 0.4̄5̄ = 45/99 = 5/11; 0.1̄4̄2̄8̄5̄7̄ = 142857/999999 = 1/7. With a non-repeating part: (whole digits − non-repeating digits) ÷ (9s then 0s). 0.16̄ = (16 − 1)/90 = 1/6.

0.16̄ = (16 − 1)/90 = 1/6।

  3. 1/19 by doubling (Ekādhikena) · 1/19

    Start from the right with 1. Each new digit to the left is twice the previous digit plus any carry; write the units, carry the tens. The 18 digits, read left to right, are 052631578947368421.

Worked examples ·

3 ÷ 7 = 0.428571
  • 1/7 = 0.142857 and the cycle order is 1 4 2 8 5 7
  • 3/7 starts the cycle at 4: 0.428571
45 ÷ 99 = 0.4545
  • 0.4̄5̄ = 45/99
  • Cancel by 9 → 5/11
15 ÷ 90 = 0.1667
  • 0.16̄: (16 − 1)/90 = 15/90
  • = 1/6
1 ÷ 13 = 0.076923
  • 1/13 = 0.076923 repeating
  • 2/13 = 0.153846, 3/13 = 0.230769 (same two cycles)

Why it works ·

x = 0.ab̄ (block of k digits) gives 10^k·x − x = block, so x = block/(10^k − 1). 1/7 repeats after six digits because 10^6 ≡ 1 (mod 7), the same reason 1/19 has an 18-digit period.

x = 0.ab̄ (k अंकों का खंड) से 10^k·x − x = खंड, अतः x = खंड/(10^k − 1)। 1/7 छह अंकों के बाद दोहराती है क्योंकि 10^6 ≡ 1 (mod 7); 1/19 में 18 अंकों का आवर्त इसी कारण है।

Common trap ·

A bar over only part of the digits means a non-repeating prefix. 0.16̄ is 0.1666…, not 0.1616….

When it stops helping ·

Learn only 1/7, 1/11, 1/13 and perhaps 1/19 as cycles. For other fractions, divide.
