Dividing by 9, 99, 5, 25 and 125

Divide by 9 with running sums, and replace division by 5, 25, 125 with a multiplication and a shift.

Sutra: Nikhilam / Ekanyūnena (division form) — Running sums of the digits

When to use it · कब उपयोग करें

Divisors 9, 99 and 999 (quotient and remainder at once), and divisors 5, 25, 125 (and 0.5, 0.25).

The method · विधि

  1. Divide by 9: running sums · 9

Bring down the first digit as the first quotient digit. Each next quotient digit is the previous quotient digit plus the next dividend digit. The final running sum is the remainder. 1234 ÷ 9: quotient digits 1, 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 3 = 6; remainder 6 + 4 = 10. A remainder of 9 or more means add 1 to the quotient and subtract 9: quotient 137, remainder 1.

  2. Divide by 99 · 99 से भाग

    Same idea with two-digit blocks: 2345 ÷ 99: first block 23 is the quotient; remainder 23 + 45 = 68. So 2345 = 99 × 23 + 68.

  3. Divide by 5, 25, 125 · 5, 25, 125 से भाग

    ÷ 5: double and divide by 10. 3745 ÷ 5 = 7490 ÷ 10 = 749. ÷ 25: multiply by 4 and divide by 100. 3750 ÷ 25 = 15000 ÷ 100 = 150. ÷ 125: multiply by 8 and divide by 1000. 4000 ÷ 125 = 32.

4000 ÷ 125 = 32।

Worked examples ·

3745 ÷ 5 = 749
  • 3745 × 2 = 7490
  • ÷ 10 = 749
3750 ÷ 25 = 150
  • 3750 × 4 = 15000
  • ÷ 100 = 150
4000 ÷ 125 = 32
  • 4000 × 8 = 32000
  • ÷ 1000 = 32
2431 ÷ 9 = 270 remainder 1
  • Quotient digits 2, 2 + 4 = 6, 6 + 3 = 9 → 269
  • Remainder 9 + 1 = 10 → quotient 270, remainder 1
  • Check: 270 × 9 + 1 = 2431
1234 ÷ 9 = 137 remainder 1
  • Quotient digits 1, 3, 6 → 136; remainder 6 + 4 = 10
  • 10 ≥ 9 → quotient 137, remainder 1
2345 ÷ 99 = 23 remainder 68
  • Quotient 23, remainder 23 + 45 = 68

Why it works ·

1/9 = 0.111… so dividing by 9 is the same as summing the digits at each place. 1/5 = 2/10, 1/25 = 4/100 and 1/125 = 8/1000, so each division becomes a multiplication followed by a decimal shift.

Common trap ·

If the final running sum is 9 or more, you must adjust the quotient and the remainder. Forgetting that gives a remainder bigger than the divisor.

When it stops helping ·

For other divisors, use fractions or digit-sum divisibility checks to eliminate options rather than long division.
