A constable in the Sikkim Police is the first face of the law for people in Gangtok's markets, in the hill towns of the south and west, and in the far villages of the north. The job is uniformed, physically demanding and secure, and it draws a large number of applicants for a small number of posts. That is exactly why it pays to understand how the process works before you start running on the road every morning and reading every night.
This guide is written with a caution up front. Sikkim is a very small state, and it does not have a standing yearly exam calendar for police recruitment. Recruitment happens when the police department has vacancies and the state government clears them. The advertisement may come from the police department or a recruitment authority named in it, and the steps, the physical standards and the written test format are set out in that notice. Some of what follows is therefore the stable, general pattern of police constable recruitment in Indian states, and I have marked every point that you must check in the current official advertisement. Please do not treat any figure on social media as final.
Latest Notification and How the Cycle Works
Police constable posts in the state are generally of two kinds. There are civil police posts for general duty in police stations, traffic and the district units, and there are armed police posts for the Sikkim Armed Police and reserve battalions, which handle guard duties, security at events and support for law and order. Some notices cover both, and some cover only one. In some years the advertisement may also include posts for special wings or for women candidates on the basis of separate quotas.
A typical cycle looks like this.
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| Advertisement | Posts, eligibility, standards, application method and last date are published |
| Application | Submitted as the notice directs, with documents and photographs |
| Physical screening | Measurement of height and chest for male candidates, height for female candidates, and sometimes weight |
| Physical efficiency test | Timed running and other events, qualifying in nature or carrying marks, according to the notice |
| Written test | Objective or short-answer test on general knowledge, reasoning, arithmetic and language |
| Document check | Certificates of education, age, category and residence |
| Medical | Fitness check and eyesight tests |
| Merit list and training | Selection by merit as defined in the notice, followed by basic training |
The order of the physical and written stages is fixed by each notification. In many states the physical screening comes first and only qualified candidates sit for the written test. In others it is the reverse. Read the notice for the sequence and plan your calendar around it.
What a Constable Does
Duties include patrolling, guarding vital installations and offices, traffic management, handling crowds at festivals and public functions, assisting in the investigation of crimes, serving summons and warrants, escorting prisoners and VIPs, and maintaining records at the station. In Sikkim there is also work that is particular to a hill state. Constables may be posted along tourist routes, at check-posts, near border areas and in places that are cut off by landslides during the rains. They help in rescue and relief when disasters occur, and they deal with a large seasonal flow of tourists that has to be managed politely.
The job requires a calm temper. You will meet people at their worst moments, such as after an accident or a theft, and your task is to record the facts and act within the law. Good communication in Nepali, Hindi and English, and where possible in local languages such as Bhutia or Lepcha, is a real advantage.
Post and Vacancy Structure
Vacancies are set in each advertisement, by category and by gender where applicable, and often separated into civil and armed police. Do not accept a number quoted anywhere but the official notice. A quick way to protect yourself from misinformation is this: if a website quotes a vacancy number and cannot tell you the advertisement number and date, ignore it.
Reservations for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes and any state-specific categories are applied as per the government's rules. There may also be preference or reservation on the basis of domicile or Sikkimese status, which is discussed below.
Eligibility
Educational Qualification
Police constable recruitment across India typically asks for a pass in Class 10 or Class 12 from a recognised board, depending on the state and post. For Sikkim, confirm which level the current advertisement requires, and whether it is the same for the civil and armed posts. Do not assume that a higher qualification always helps: some advertisements state the qualification precisely and mark the age limit accordingly.
Age Limit
The minimum age is commonly 18 years. The upper limit for the general category is generally in the early or mid twenties, with relaxations for reserved categories and for other groups such as ex-servicemen. The date on which age is counted is stated in the notice, and it may differ from the date of application, so read it carefully.
Sikkimese Status and Domicile
Sikkim has a special historical category called Sikkim Subjects, and its holders have been issued a Sikkim Subject Certificate. A Certificate of Identification (COI) exists for persons whose link to Sikkim is recognised under the rules but who do not have the older certificate. State government advertisements have often mentioned one of these documents, or a permanent residence certificate, in the eligibility section and may give preference to candidates who hold them. Whether a particular constable notice requires it, prefers it or accepts other proof of residence is a matter for the notice. Please verify on the current advertisement, because these rules have been modified over time. If you are unsure of which certificate your family has, sort it out through the district administration well before you apply.
Physical Standards
Physical standards are a key part of the eligibility for a constable's post. They cover minimum height, chest measurement with an expansion for male candidates, and sometimes weight. Standards for women differ from those for men. Some states allow lower standards for candidates from hill or tribal communities. I am not going to give numbers here because they vary between advertisements and I do not want you to plan around a figure that may be out of date. Find the standards in the notice, and get yourself measured at a government clinic or a gym with accurate equipment before applying.
Medical Standards
Typical medical checks include eyesight (distance and colour vision), hearing, absence of flat feet, knock knees and squint, and no disabling condition. Get an eye check done early. Some candidates lose an attempt because they neglected a problem that a simple examination would have revealed.
Application Process
- Read the advertisement completely, including the notes and annexures.
- Arrange documents: proof of date of birth, educational certificates, category certificate where applicable, Sikkim Subject Certificate, COI or residence certificate as required, photographs and identity proof.
- Apply through the method given in the notice, which may be an online form or a form submitted at a stated office.
- Pay the fee if the notice requires one. Do not rely on an amount you saw elsewhere.
- Keep a photocopy or a saved copy of the application and the receipt.
- Track the physical test dates and the admit card notices on official channels.
Selection Stages
Physical measurement. Height, chest and weight are measured on the ground, in front of officers. A candidate who fails measurement is not called for the next stage, so measurement is a knock-out.
Physical efficiency test. The main event is usually a timed run, with distance and time given in the notice, and it may be accompanied by long jump, high jump, shot put or similar events. In some states the test carries marks, and in others it is qualifying only. Confirm whether the marks count for the final merit.
Written test. An objective test on the topics described below, for a limited duration.
Merit list. Prepared as per the formula set in the notice. Where the written test is the ranking stage, a candidate must clear the physical stages first and then get high marks in writing.
Medical and verification. A police verification report and documents, then medical fitness.
Written Test Syllabus and How to Prepare
The subjects below appear in almost every constable examination, and they will serve you even if the pattern changes.
General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Topics: Indian history in outline, the freedom struggle, the Constitution and government, basic geography, science in everyday life, sports, awards, books, important days and current events of the past year.
Sikkim GK is worth a good share of your time. Learn these facts thoroughly.
- Sikkim became the twenty-second state of India on 16 May 1975. Gangtok is the capital.
- Nepali is widely spoken and is used as a link language. Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu are among the other languages in official arrangements.
- Kanchenjunga is the highest peak in India and the third highest in the world.
- The Teesta and the Rangit are the main rivers.
- Nathu La is a pass linking Sikkim with Tibet.
- Sikkim has been declared India's first fully organic state.
- Red panda is the state animal, and the blood pheasant is the state bird. Rhododendron is associated with the state tree, and the noble dendrobium is the state flower.
- Important places: Rumtek, Pemayangtse, Tashiding, Tsomgo Lake, Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley, Namchi, Pelling and Mangan.
- Pakyong Airport, opened in 2018, is the state's first airport.
How to study: make a one-page Sikkim sheet and review it daily for ten minutes. For the rest of GK, use one standard book plus a monthly current affairs compilation.
Reasoning and Mental Ability
Topics: analogies, classification, number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, syllogism and simple non-verbal reasoning.
How to study: practise ten questions a day under time. The pattern is more important than the number of questions. For direction sense and blood relations, draw a diagram every time.
Arithmetic
Topics: number system, percentages, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time, speed and distance, mensuration and basic data interpretation.
How to study: learn tables to 20 and squares to 30. Spend a month building speed on percentages and fractions, since these help all other topics.
Language
English (and perhaps Nepali or Hindi, depending on the notice): grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, synonyms and antonyms, sentence correction and one-word substitution. A small number of questions may test basic legal and police awareness, such as the meaning of terms like FIR, cognizable offence and warrant.
Basics of Law and Police Awareness
For constable exams, a light awareness is enough. Know that police is a state subject under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. Know that the three new criminal laws, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act on 1 July 2024. Know your fundamental rights, including protection against arrest and detention.
Exam Pattern Table (Typical, Verify)
| Component | Nature | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Physical measurement | Pass or fail | Height, chest, weight as notified |
| Physical efficiency test | Timed events | May be qualifying or carry marks |
| Written test | Objective, probably with negative marking | Subjects as above; duration and marks per the notice |
| Medical and documents | Pass or fail | Before final selection |
Salary, Allowances and Career Growth
A constable is paid according to the pay matrix that the Government of Sikkim notifies for the post, along with dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances such as uniform and ration allowances that the rules provide. Do not depend on a salary quoted by a website. The notice will state the pay level, and the latest government orders will show the allowances.
Career growth in police services is through promotion, from constable to head constable, assistant sub-inspector and sub-inspector, with the departmental process and the vacancy position deciding the pace. A constable who has a graduate degree can also compete for direct entry, for which see Sikkim Police Sub-Inspector. Departmental training courses, specialisation in wings such as traffic, cyber, mountaineering or disaster response and sports quotas may open other options.
Previous-Year Trend Discussion
I have not included any cut-off marks because they vary by cycle and category, and I cannot confirm them. The trends worth knowing are qualitative. First, the physical stage removes a large share of applicants, so candidates who train early have a genuine advantage. Second, the written test is usually of a moderate level, on the pattern of other state constable exams, with reasoning and arithmetic determining the difference between candidates. Third, general knowledge questions about the state are common and are easy marks. Fourth, the number of vacancies is small and irregular, which means competition is stiff and even a few marks can matter in the final rank.
Worked Practice Questions
Question 1. Under the Seventh Schedule, "police" falls in which list?
Answer: The State List. Public order and police are state subjects, and this is why each state has its own police force.
Question 2. Under the new criminal laws, the First Information Report is recorded under which section of the BNSS, which corresponds to Section 154 of the old CrPC?
Answer: Section 173 of the BNSS.
Question 3. A constable runs 400 metres in 80 seconds at a steady speed. What is the speed in kilometres per hour?
Answer: 18 km/h. Speed is 400/80 = 5 metres per second, and multiplying by 18/5 converts it to 18 km/h.
Question 4. A constable walks 5 km north, turns right and walks 3 km, then turns right again and walks 5 km. How far is he from the starting point, and in which direction?
Answer: 3 km, to the east. After going north 5 km, he turns east for 3 km, then turns south for 5 km, so he is level with the start but 3 km to the east.
Question 5. Out of 250 candidates, 40 percent cleared the physical test. Of those, 25 percent cleared the written test. How many candidates cleared both?
Answer: 25. Forty percent of 250 is 100, and 25 percent of 100 is 25.
Question 6. Nathu La connects Sikkim with which region?
Answer: The Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It has been an important trade pass.
Question 7. Within how many hours must an arrested person be produced before a magistrate, excluding the time taken for travel?
Answer: 24 hours, under Article 22(2) of the Constitution.
Question 8. Choose the correct word: "Neither of the two officers ___ present at the meeting."
Answer: "was". "Neither" is singular, so it takes a singular verb.
Question 9. What is the state animal of Sikkim?
Answer: The red panda.
Question 10. The ratio of the ages of two constables is 3 to 5, and the sum of their ages is 56 years. What is the age of the older constable?
Answer: 35 years. Total parts are 3 + 5 = 8, one part is 56/8 = 7, and the older constable has 5 parts, which is 35.
Month-by-Month Preparation Plan
Suppose you have six months. If you have fewer, keep the order and compress the periods.
Month 1: baseline. Get measured and check your eyesight. Begin walking and jogging four to five days a week at a gentle pace. Start reading a newspaper. Go through the notice of the previous cycle if available to understand the format. Revise basic percentages and tables.
Month 2: build the base. Running three times weekly with one longer easy run. Add strength work such as squats, push-ups, planks and skipping, and take one rest day. Study reasoning types one by one, and arithmetic up to ratio and average. Study the first half of your Sikkim sheet.
Month 3: speed. Add interval running, for example short fast runs with walking recoveries. Practise long jump and other listed events if the notice includes them. Continue reasoning, and move to time and work, time and distance and interest. Read the basics of the Constitution.
Month 4: integrate. Simulate the physical test once a week over the exact distance. Take a weekly mock test on general knowledge and reasoning. Revise the syllabus of the written test topic by topic.
Month 5: mock and correct. Two full mocks a week, with analysis. Revise your Sikkim notes and current affairs. Keep your body healthy: sleep, food and no injuries.
Month 6: taper. Reduce heavy training a week before the test, keep light jogging, sleep well and revise formulas and notes. Have documents ready and have a spare set of photographs.
Take care of your knees and ankles. Running on hill roads is good for stamina, but running downhill fast can cause injuries. Wear proper shoes, and if pain does not settle in a few days, see a doctor.

Common Mistakes
- Training hard for running and neglecting the written test, or the opposite.
- Not checking eyesight and height standards in advance.
- Suddenly increasing the running load before the test, causing injury.
- Not preparing Sikkim-specific general knowledge.
- Taking information from an unverified page about vacancies, standards or fees.
