AP District Fact Book · Chapter 33
32 | Godavari upstream-to-delta route

Start at the Polavaram-side inland reach, move to Rajamahendravaram and Dowleswaram, then split into the delta and the coast. This route places Polavaram district, present East Godavari, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema, Kakinada and West Godavari in relation to the same large river system without treating them as one district. Delta distributaries and canal irrigation explain the farming and aquaculture setting.

Do not confuse three meanings of Polavaram: a new district, a town or locality, and a multipurpose national irrigation project. The district headquarters is Rampachodavaram. A project question needs its river and implementation status; an administration question needs the district and headquarters.

Worked example: Follow the Godavari from inland toward the delta and coast. Polavaram's project and district, East Godavari's Rajamahendravaram, Konaseema's distributaries, Kakinada's port and West Godavari's coastal plain serve different roles. A map line for the river cannot decide a village's present district by itself. For a named location, check the 2026 polygon and official district page.

Active recall: Walk downstream from Polavaram-side hills to the delta and name the distinct present districts.
