India restarts tradition by donating five peacocks to UN Geneva

GENEVA, August 13 — India donated five peacocks to the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) on Thursday, reviving a historic diplomatic tradition dating back to the League of Nations era.

The peacocks were presented by the Permanent Representative of India to the UN in Geneva during a ceremony held in the Ariana Park surrounding the Palais des Nations. The tradition originally started in 1935 when peacocks were brought to Geneva from India to symbolize peace and nature in the park. The new batch of birds was transported following international wildlife transit rules and health clearances.

UNOG officials thanked the Indian delegation, stating that the birds add to the historic heritage of the diplomatic headquarters.

Diplomatic gestures and international bodies form a regular part of general awareness sections. Candidates should know that the Palais des Nations in Geneva serves as the representative office of the UN in Switzerland.

जिनेवा में संयुक्त राष्ट्र में भारत के स्थायी प्रतिनिधि द्वारा पैलेस डेस नेशंस के आसपास के एरियाना पार्क में आयोजित एक समारोह के दौरान मोर भेंट किए गए। यह परंपरा मूल रूप से 1935 में शुरू हुई थी जब पार्क में शांति और प्रकृति के प्रतीक के रूप में भारत से जिनेवा में मोर लाए गए थे। नए पक्षियों को अंतरराष्ट्रीय वन्यजीव पारगमन नियमों और स्वास्थ्य मंजूरी के बाद ले जाया गया।

यूएनओजी के अधिकारियों ने भारतीय प्रतिनिधिमंडल को धन्यवाद देते हुए कहा कि ये पक्षी राजनयिक मुख्यालय की ऐतिहासिक विरासत को बढ़ाते हैं।
