Squares near a base (Yāvadūnam)

Square 96, 103, 994 or 47 using only the distance from 100, 1000 or 50.

Sutra: Yāvadūnaṁ Tāvadūnīkṛtya Vargaṁ ca Yojayet — Whatever the deficiency, lessen by that and set up the square of the deficiency

When to use it · कब उपयोग करें

The number is within about 15 of 10, 100, 1000, or of a working base like 50 or 200.

The method · विधि

  1. Find the distance d from the base · आधार से दूरी d निकालें

    96 is 4 below 100, so d = 4. 103 is 3 above, so d = 3.

  2. Left part: the number adjusted by d · बायाँ भाग: d से समायोजित संख्या

    Below the base subtract d: 96 − 4 = 92. Above the base add d: 103 + 3 = 106.

    d² = 16, written with two digits for base 100: 9216. For 103: 09 → 10609. Carry if d² overflows: 112² → 124 | 144 → 12544.

    d² = 16, आधार 100 के लिए दो अंकों में: 9216। 103 के लिए: 09 → 10609। d² अधिक हो तो हासिल दें: 112² → 124 | 144 → 12544।

  4. Working base 50 ·

    47² : d = 3 below 50. (47 − 3) × 50 + 3² = 44 × 50 + 9 = 2209.

    47² : 50 से d = 3 नीचे। (47 − 3) × 50 + 3² = 44 × 50 + 9 = 2209।

Worked examples ·

96² = 9216
  • d = 4
  • 96 − 4 = 92; 4² = 16
  • = 9216
103² = 10609
  • d = 3
  • 103 + 3 = 106; 3² = 09
  • = 10609
994² = 988036
  • Base 1000, d = 6
  • 994 − 6 = 988; 6² = 036
  • = 988036
112² = 12544
  • d = 12
  • 112 + 12 = 124; 12² = 144
  • 12400 + 144 = 12544
47² = 2209
  • Base 50, d = 3
  • (47 − 3) × 50 = 2200
  • + 9 = 2209
53² = 2809
  • Base 50, d = 3 above
  • (53 + 3) × 50 = 2800
  • + 9 = 2809
68² = 4624
  • (70 − 2)² = 4900 − 2 × 70 × 2 + 4
  • 4900 − 280 + 4 = 4624

Why it works ·

(B − d)² = B² − 2Bd + d² = B(B − 2d) + d² = B·(N − d) + d², with N = B − d. For numbers above the base the same identity holds with +d.

(B − d)² = B² − 2Bd + d² = B(B − 2d) + d² = B·(N − d) + d², जहाँ N = B − d।

Common trap ·

Left part goes with the base multiplier, right part is d² padded. For base 50 the right part is simply added, not placed beside.

When it stops helping ·

For numbers far from any base use Duplex (next topic) or (a ± b)².
