Multiplication near a base (Nikhilam)
Multiply numbers close to 10, 100, 1000 (or 50, 200) using only their deficits or surpluses.
When to use it · कब उपयोग करें
Both numbers are within about 15 of the same power of 10 (or a convenient working base such as 50, 60, 200). 97 × 94, 104 × 107, 108 × 93, 988 × 997.
97 × 94, 104 × 107, 108 × 93, 988 × 997।
The method · विधि
Choose the base and note each distance ·
Pick the nearest power of 10. For 97 and 94 the base is 100; the deficits are 3 and 6 (below the base, written as −3 and −6).
Left part: cross-add ·
Add one number to the other number's distance: 97 − 6 = 91 (the same as 94 − 3). That is the left part.
Right part: multiply the distances ·
3 × 6 = 18. The right part has as many digits as the base has zeros (two for 100), so 18 stays 18. Answer: 9118.
Mixed sides and carries ·
If one number is above the base and one below, the right part is negative: 108 × 93 → 108 − 7 = 101 and 8 × (−7) = −56, so 10100 − 56 = 10044. If the right part is too large, carry the extra to the left: 88 × 85 → 73 | 180 → 7480.
Working bases ·
For 48 × 46 use base 50 (= 100 ÷ 2): deficits 2 and 4, cross value 48 − 4 = 44, so 44 × 50 + 2 × 4 = 2200 + 8 = 2208. Multiply the left part by the base, then add the product of the distances.

Why it works ·
(B − a)(B − b) = B² − B(a + b) + ab = B(B − a − b) + ab. B − a − b is exactly the cross value (B − a) − b. The same identity works with plus signs and mixed signs, because a and b are just signed distances.
(B − a)(B − b) = B² − B(a + b) + ab = B(B − a − b) + ab। B − a − b ही क्रॉस मान (B − a) − b है।
The right part must be padded to the base's number of zeros (06, not 6; 036, not 36). If it overflows (180 on base 100), carry. These two slips cause almost every wrong answer.
If the two numbers are on different sides of different bases (say 47 and 96), the method needs a ratio-based base and is slower than cross multiplication. Switch to Urdhva-Tiryak.
