This page sets out the APPSC Group-IV syllabus as printed in Annexure-II of Notification No. 23/2021, the Commission's most recent full recruitment of Junior Assistant cum Computer Assistant (A.P. Revenue Department, 670 posts, district cadre). A fresh Junior Assistant notification had not been issued as on 10 October 2026, so this scheme is the best official guide until one is. Topic lists are the official wording, condensed where the notification repeats itself. For questions, marks and timings see the exam pattern; for the Hostel Welfare Officer Grade-II recruitment that is open under Notification 25/2026, see the last section of this page.

Syllabus at a glance

Stage Paper or section Subject Marks Standard
Screening Test (objective, OMR) Section A General Studies and Mental Ability 100 Bachelor's degree
Screening Test Section B General English and General Telugu (25 each) 50 SSC
Mains (objective, computer-based) Paper-I General Studies and Mental Ability 150 Bachelor's degree
Mains Paper-II General English and General Telugu (75 each) 150 SSC
Computer Proficiency Test (qualifying, practical) Five parts Office automation: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, e-mail 50 Practical

The General Studies list is identical for Screening Section A and Mains Paper-I, and the language list is identical for Screening Section B and Mains Paper-II. You prepare one syllabus and sit it twice at different lengths.

General Studies and Mental Ability: the twelve items

Annexure-II lists these twelve items for Screening Section A and again for Mains Paper-I. We have grouped them under our own headings; the numbering is the notification's.

Current affairs and science

  1. Events of national and international importance.
  2. Current affairs: international, national and regional.
  3. General Science and its applications to day-to-day life; contemporary developments in science and technology and information technology.

History, polity, economy and geography, each with an Andhra Pradesh emphasis

  1. Social, economic and political history of modern India, with emphasis on Andhra Pradesh.
  2. Indian polity and governance: constitutional issues, public policy, reforms and e-governance initiatives, with specific reference to Andhra Pradesh.
  3. Economic development in India since independence, with emphasis on Andhra Pradesh.
  4. Physical geography of the Indian sub-continent and Andhra Pradesh.

Environment and disaster management

  1. Disaster management: vulnerability profile, prevention and mitigation strategies, application of remote sensing and GIS in the assessment of disaster.
  2. Sustainable development and environmental protection.

Reasoning and data

  1. Logical reasoning, analytical ability and data interpretation.
  2. Data analysis: (a) tabulation of data; (b) visual representation of data; (c) basic data analysis (summary statistics such as mean, median, mode, variance and coefficient of variation) and interpretation.

The state itself

  1. Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and its administrative, economic, social, cultural, political and legal implications and problems.

Reading the list

This is our reading, not the Commission's:

  • Six of the twelve items point at Andhra Pradesh: items 4, 5, 6, 7 and 12 by name, and item 2 through the word "regional". Modern history is "with emphasis on Andhra Pradesh"; polity is "with specific reference to Andhra Pradesh". A general Indian GS book covers the frame but not the AP depth the wording asks for.
  • Item 12 is a full topic in its own right. The notification does not put bifurcation inside history or economy; it lists the administrative, economic, social, cultural, political and legal implications separately. The AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the division of assets and staff, the capital question, the river-water boards and the special-status demand all sit here.
  • Items 10 and 11 are two items, not one. Reasoning and data interpretation are the familiar mental-ability block. Data analysis adds tabulation, charts and five named statistics. Candidates who revise only mean, median and mode leave variance and coefficient of variation on the table; they are short formulas.
  • Item 8 is specific. Vulnerability profile, prevention and mitigation strategies, and remote sensing and GIS in disaster assessment. Read it as an AP topic too: cyclones on the coast, floods in the Godavari and Krishna deltas, drought in Rayalaseema.
  • Nothing in the list is pre-modern history. Item 4 says modern India. Ancient and medieval dynasties are not on the list for this post, which is a real difference from the Group-I and Group-II screening tests.

General English and General Telugu

Section B of the Screening Test (25 marks per language) and Paper-II of the Mains (75 marks per language) carry the same items, at SSC standard.

General English General Telugu
Comprehension Synonyms and vocabulary
Usage and idioms Grammar
Vocabulary and punctuation Telugu-to-English meanings
Logical re-arrangement of sentences English-to-Telugu meanings
Grammar Usage and idiom

The standard is Class 10, so the test is of correct everyday office language, not literature. Two of the five Telugu items are translation of meaning in each direction, which is unusual and worth practising on its own. Our Telugu grammar notes on sandhi, samasa, alankara and chandassu cover the grammar item; the usage and vocabulary items come from daily reading. Notification 23/2021 lets the candidate choose English or Telugu as the medium for the General Studies papers, but Section B and Paper-II test both languages regardless of medium.

Computer Proficiency Test

The scheme in Annexure-II calls this a qualifying practical test, "Proficiency in Office Automation with usage of Computers and Associated Software", held for eligible candidates at 1:2 to the vacancies notified, after the written stages. It lasts 30 minutes and carries 50 marks, with minimum qualifying marks of 15 (SC, ST, PH), 17.5 (BC) and 20 (OC).

Part Task (the notification's example) Marks
A Typing a letter, passage or paragraph of about 100 to 150 words in a word processor, with the same formatting as the question paper 15
B Preparing a table or graph in a spreadsheet 10
C Preparing two presentation slides 10
D Creating and manipulating a database 10
E Displaying the content of an e-mail inbox 5

The notification's detailed contents for Part A include creating and saving a document, deleting characters, words, lines and blocks, undo and redo, moving, copying and renaming, and formatting the text. The test gives you the text in the question paper and asks you to reproduce it with the same formatting. The marks do not count towards rank; they only decide whether you stay in the list.

Other Group-IV schemes on the Commission's site

"Group-IV" is a label for several recruitments, each with its own scheme. Two older scheme documents on the Commission's syllabus page and the current Hostel Welfare Officer notification show how different they are.

Junior Assistants in various departments (S.S.C. standard). Two objective papers of 150 questions, 150 marks and 150 minutes each. Paper-1 General Knowledge follows the syllabus of the Board of Secondary School Certificate, A.P., for Class 10 in history, geography, civics, economics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and current affairs. Paper-2 Secretarial Abilities covers mental ability (verbal and non-verbal), logical reasoning, comprehension, re-arrangement of sentences to improve the analysis of a passage, and numerical and arithmetical abilities. Our Telugu-medium book on Group-IV Secretarial Abilities follows this paper.

Hostel Welfare Officers Grade-II (Intermediate standard, older scheme). Paper-1 General Studies with current affairs of national importance, history and geography of Andhra Pradesh, mental ability and language ability; Paper-2 the concerned subject (foundations of education, educational psychology, trends in education). 150 questions, 150 marks and 150 minutes each.

Hostel Welfare Officer Grade-II under Notification 25/2026 (degree standard, current). The detailed notification of 9 October 2026 prints a new scheme: a single-level computer-based test with Paper-I General Studies and Mental Ability (150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes) and Paper-II Education (150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes), total 300, with one-third negative marking and a qualifying Computer Proficiency Test of 60 minutes and 100 marks. Paper-I has ten items: current events of international, national and AP importance; general science and its applications with contemporary developments in science, technology and IT; history of India with a focus on AP and the national movement; geography of India with focus on AP; Indian polity and governance; Indian economy and planning; sustainable development and environmental protection; disaster management; logical reasoning, analytical ability and interpretation; and data analysis with mean, median, mode and variance. There is no language section and no bifurcation item. Paper-II covers foundations of education, educational psychology (including statistics: central tendency, variability, correlation) and trends in education. The qualification is graduation with B.Ed. or equivalent, so this is a teacher-trained post, not a clerical one.

The lesson: a Group-IV syllabus forwarded on social media may belong to a different post. Match the scheme to the notification number.

Where the Screening Test and the Mains overlap

Because the lists are identical, the only question is depth. Our suggestion: read each item once at Mains depth and test it in both formats. The table shows which Pareeksha material serves each block.

Syllabus block Items Our notes and books
Andhra Pradesh history, polity, economy, geography, bifurcation 4, 5, 6, 7, 12 Junior Assistant complete guide (Telugu); Andhra Pradesh state guide
Reasoning, data interpretation, data analysis 10, 11 Reasoning and arithmetic shortcuts; Data interpretation and mental ability; Group-IV arithmetic and reasoning (Telugu)
General Telugu Section B, Paper-II Telugu grammar notes
Secretarial abilities (older SSC-standard scheme) Paper-2 Group-IV Secretarial Abilities (Telugu)

How to use this syllabus

  1. Print Annexure-II of Notification 23/2021 and tick the twelve items and ten language items as you finish them. When a new Junior Assistant notification comes, print its annexure instead and compare the two line by line.
  2. Practise each item as you complete it. Topic-wise practice on Pareeksha is Pro; the 10-question Group-IV mini-mock and Daily Dangal are free.
  3. Give the Computer Proficiency Test its own weekly slot on a real computer. A qualifying test cannot raise your rank, but it can remove you from the list.
  4. Re-check the notification before each stage. The Commission can issue corrigenda; this page was checked on the date shown.
