An engineering graduate or diploma holder in Andhra Pradesh quickly learns that there is no single door for technical government jobs. Some posts come through the Public Service Commission (APPSC), some through the power utilities, which recruit on their own, and some through the railways, which are a central employer. The branch you studied decides which doors are open, the age and the date of your degree decide whether you can apply, and the exam pattern decides how you should divide your hours between technical and general papers. A candidate who does not know this wastes months preparing for a post that was never open to their branch.

This guide takes each route in turn: what the post is, who is eligible, how the exam is built, what has been notified as on October 2026 and what has not, and how to plan. It also puts the routes side by side, because the useful insight for most candidates is that one strong technical base serves several exams. Items that were checked against an official document say so. Items that came from press reports or that could not be re-checked are marked. For the wider state picture, see the Andhra Pradesh government exams 2026 guide and the AP job calendar 2026.

Short answer, as on October 2026. B.E. or B.Tech graduates can look at APPSC Assistant Executive Engineer and Assistant Engineer notifications, the APGENCO, APTRANSCO and distribution company Assistant Executive Engineer recruitment, APPSC Lecturer in Polytechnic Colleges, and the APPSC Assistant Environmental Engineer post notified in September 2026. Diploma holders can apply for some APPSC Assistant Engineer posts and for railway Junior Engineer posts. ITI holders have the railway Assistant Loco Pilot and technician routes. Every post names its allowed branches, so read the branch list before anything else.

Which route fits which qualification

Your qualification Example posts Who recruits
B.E. or B.Tech (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics) Assistant Executive Engineer, Assistant Engineer APPSC
B.E. or B.Tech Assistant Executive Engineer (Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Civil) APGENCO, APTRANSCO, distribution companies
B.E. or B.Tech in the relevant branch Lecturer in Government Polytechnic Colleges APPSC
B.E. or B.Tech Assistant Environmental Engineer in the Pollution Control Board APPSC (Notification 08/2026)
Three-year engineering diploma or B.Sc engineering Junior Engineer, Depot Material Superintendent Railway Recruitment Boards
Diploma in Civil or Mechanical Assistant Engineer in some departments APPSC
Class 10 plus ITI Assistant Loco Pilot, technician Railway Recruitment Boards
Class 10 plus diploma Assistant Loco Pilot Railway Recruitment Boards

Railway posts are central government posts. Candidates from Andhra Pradesh can apply, but you may apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only. The other two routes, the Commission and the power utilities, are state-level, and there local candidates get priority.

APPSC Assistant Executive Engineer

The Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) is a senior engineering post in departments such as Rural Water Supply and Water Resources. A bachelor's degree in the relevant branch is the qualification. The scheme of examination, as the Commission's AEE documents show, is three objective papers of 150 questions each in 150 minutes, a total of 450 marks, followed by a Computer Proficiency Test for shortlisted candidates.

Paper Subject Questions Time Marks
Paper 1 General Studies and Mental Ability 150 150 minutes 150
Paper 2 Common engineering paper for the discipline 150 150 minutes 150
Paper 3 Branch-specific paper (for example Civil or Mechanical) 150 150 minutes 150
Total 450 450

The papers you answer depend on your degree branch. General Studies covers current affairs, science and technology, Indian history, polity, economy, geography, disaster management, reasoning, data analysis and the state reorganisation topics.

Recent status. As on October 2026, the latest AEE notification in the Commission's list is Notification 17/2025 dated 16.09.2025, for Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) in the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering Service. It advertised only 3 carried-forward vacancies in the scale of Rs 57,100 to Rs 1,47,760, with an age band of 18 to 42 on 1 July 2025 and an application window of 18.09.2025 to 08.10.2025. Earlier, Notification 19/2022 was a larger AEE cycle whose written tests were held in 2023. A new large AEE recruitment had not been notified as on October 2026. Some press coverage of the 2026 job calendar mentions about 428 Assistant Executive Engineer posts in the third phase, but that is a reported planning figure, not a notification. For the full syllabus and numericals, see APPSC AEE Civil.

APPSC Assistant Engineer, including diploma holders

Notification 20/2025 of 24.09.2025 advertised Assistant Engineer posts, with 11 carried-forward vacancies in total. The qualification differs by post, so it must be read post by post.

Post code Department Qualification in brief
01 Assistant Engineer (Civil), Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Licentiate in Civil Engineering from the State Board of Technical Education and Training or an equivalent qualification
02 Assistant Engineer (Civil), Water Resources Diploma or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
03 Assistant Engineer (Civil or Mechanical), Panchayati Raj and Rural Development B.E. in Civil or Mechanical, or certain diplomas such as the Licentiate in Civil or Mechanical Engineering

Other facts from the notification: pay scale Rs 48,440 to Rs 1,37,220 under RPS 2022; age 18 to 42 as on 1 July 2025; fee of Rs 250 as processing fee plus Rs 80 as examination fee, with the examination fee waived for several groups; selection by an OMR written test of 300 marks followed by a Computer Proficiency Test. The scheme is two papers of 150 questions in 150 minutes each: General Studies and Mental Ability at degree standard, and Civil or Mechanical common at diploma standard. There is negative marking of one third of the marks for each wrong answer. The Computer Proficiency Test is a 60-minute practical test of 100 marks with minimum marks of 40 for OC, 35 for BC and 30 for SC, ST and persons with benchmark disabilities. The window closed on 15.10.2025, so this is a pattern example and not an open notification. If you hold a diploma whose name is not in the list, you must send a copy of the government equivalence order within the stated time or the application can be rejected. For electrical and mechanical candidates, see APPSC AE Electrical and Mechanical.

The age limit changed in September 2026

The age in the notification above is the one that applied in 2025. On 14 September 2026 the General Administration (Services-A) Department issued G.O.Ms.No.187, which, as read in the Group-I notification, raises the upper age for non-uniform services to 44 years for recruitments notified up to 30 September 2027. APPSC engineering posts are non-uniform services, so a future notification is likely to apply the new ceiling, but read the age clause of the notification you apply for. The power utilities are separate employers and print their own limits.

APPSC Lecturer in Polytechnic Colleges

A B.E. or B.Tech graduate in the relevant branch can apply for the post of Lecturer in Government Polytechnic Colleges, which the Commission recruits as part of the Technical Education Service. The latest notification in the Commission's list as on October 2026 is Notification 13/2023, dated 21.12.2023, for 99 carried-forward vacancies in 21 disciplines, on the AICTE 2016 scale of Rs 56,100 to Rs 98,400. The age band was 18 to 42 on 1 July 2023. Applications ran from 29.01.2024 to 18.02.2024. The written test was a computer-based test of 450 marks, with 150 for general studies and 300 for the subject, followed by a Computer Proficiency Test. The process took a long time, with rescheduled tests and keys released in 2025. The lesson for a candidate is to prepare with patience and over a long cycle. The subject paper carries two thirds of the marks, so depth in your branch decides the result. See APPSC Polytechnic Lecturer.

APPSC Assistant Environmental Engineer

The APPSC brief notification 08/2026 of 15 September 2026 lists 40 provisional vacancies for Assistant Environmental Engineer in the Pollution Control Board. The Commission's web note gives tentative application dates of 06.10.2026 to 27.10.2026, and a second web note of 06.10.2026 confirms that the detailed notifications for the group of notifications that includes this post were hosted on that date. The detailed Notification No. 08/2026 of 06.10.2026, read for a later check, gives 41 vacancies (1 carried forward), age 18 to 44 on 01.07.2026, a pay scale of Rs 57,100 to 1,47,760 and a computer-based written test on a date to be intimated, with applications from 06.10.2026 to 27.10.2026; check its qualification clause for the branch list before you apply. It is the clearest engineering-degree post in the Commission's September 2026 list.

APGENCO, APTRANSCO and the distribution companies

These are Government of Andhra Pradesh undertakings, APGENCO describing itself on its site as such. APGENCO generates power, APTRANSCO transmits it, and three distribution companies, APSPDCL, APCPDCL and APEPDCL, distribute it. They recruit on their own, not through the Commission.

In 2026 these utilities used a common examination for part of their Assistant Executive Engineer recruitment. APGENCO Notification No. 01/CGM (Adm, IS&ERP)/2026, dated 25.06.2026, covers Assistant Executive Engineer (Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics) and Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil).

Item Detail
Common examination One exam for Electrical and Civil posts of APGENCO, APTRANSCO, APEPDCL, APCPDCL and APSPDCL
Separate examination Mechanical and Electronics posts of APGENCO
Portal apgenco.gov.in or apvidyutrecruitment.apcfss.in
Application dates 30.06.2026 to 20.07.2026
Computer-based test dates 22.08.2026 to 29.08.2026 as stated in the notification
APGENCO vacancies by branch Electrical 52, Mechanical 21, Electronics 7, Civil 20; 100 in all

The APGENCO home page, when opened for this post, carried a link to AP Vidyut Recruitment Examination scores for 2026, which indicates that the test has been held and results are in progress. The vacancy numbers of APTRANSCO and the distribution companies are in their own notifications, which were not read, and unofficial sites have quoted a combined figure that is not used here. Press coverage of the job calendar mentions about 629 power sector posts in the third phase, which is a reported figure and a separate matter from this notification.

Item APGENCO AEE 2026 as printed in the notification
Qualification, Electrical B.E., B.Tech or A.M.I.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or equivalent
Qualification, Mechanical B.E., B.Tech or A.M.I.E. in Mechanical Engineering
Qualification, Electronics Electronics and related branches in the listed set
Qualification, Civil B.E., B.Tech or A.M.I.E. in Civil Engineering
Age 18 to 42 as on 1 July 2026; 47 for SC, ST, BC and EWS; 52 for persons with disabilities
Fee Rs 1,000, not refundable
Examination Computer-based, 3 hours, 100 marks, no negative marking
Minimum qualifying marks 40 percent OC and EWS, 35 percent BC, 30 percent SC, ST and PwBD
Pay Consolidated Rs 75,000 per month during two years of probation, then the Revised Pay Scale 2022
Reservation One third for women, 4 percent for persons with disabilities

A local quota applies by zone: 95 percent of zone-wise vacancies go to local candidates and 5 percent to open competition, so know your local zone. The test is in English only. Preferences given in the application cannot be changed later, and the allotment of the utility depends on merit, reservation and local status. A notice in the notification says that canvassing leads to permanent disqualification.

Section of the 100-mark test Marks
Core engineering of your branch 70
General intelligence and reasoning 5
General awareness 7
English 5
Quantitative aptitude 8
Computer knowledge 5
Total 100

The lesson is that 70 marks are in your branch, so a strong technical base takes you close to the goal, and the remaining 30 marks come from short sections that can be covered in less time. A 70 to 30 time split is a reasonable plan. Allowances, such as project allowances, depend on the posting, so the pay you take home is not one number.

Panchayat Raj and municipal engineering posts

Panchayat Raj engineering posts come through the Commission, as the 2025 Assistant Engineer notification shows with its Panchayati Raj and Rural Development post. Rural Water Supply and Water Resources also have civil Assistant Engineer posts. Municipal engineering posts, such as Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer in municipal bodies, could not be confirmed as a recruitment route or as notified this year. The Commission's lists show municipal accounts and town planning posts, which are different. Watch the Commission and municipal administration notices. Small recruitments of this kind, such as 11 posts in one notification or 3 in another, draw heavy competition per post, so do not rely on a single post.

Railway Junior Engineer

Railway posts are central posts, so any Indian citizen meeting the conditions can apply, and there is no state local rule. You may apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only; for Telugu candidates RRB Secunderabad is usually the nearest. The Junior Engineer notification for 2026, as read earlier for this series, is CEN 04/2026 for Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent. The railway sites did not load during the October check, so the figures below are the ones recorded from the notification and should be confirmed.

Item Recorded detail
Vacancies across all boards 3,993
Pay Level 6, starting basic Rs 35,400
Age 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2027, with relaxations by category
Qualification Three-year engineering diploma or an engineering degree, post-wise; some posts accept a B.Sc
Application dates 14.08.2026 to 13.09.2026; closed
Fee Rs 500 (Rs 400 refunded on appearing in CBT-1); Rs 250 for special groups
Stages CBT-1, CBT-2, document verification, medical examination

The structure is the useful part for planning. CBT-1 is a screening test of 100 questions in 90 minutes with one third negative marking, covering mathematics, reasoning, general awareness and general science. CBT-2 has 150 questions in 120 minutes: general awareness, physics and chemistry, basics of computers, basics of environment and pollution control, and 100 questions in the technical subject of the branch. So two thirds of CBT-2 is your branch. The notification states that candidates are shortlisted for CBT-2 at a multiple of the vacancies. Because the window has closed, treat this as the pattern to prepare for the next railway notification.

Railway Assistant Loco Pilot and ITI candidates

For ITI holders the railway is the main route. CEN 01/2026 for Assistant Loco Pilot, as recorded, accepted Class 10 with an ITI in listed trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Wireman, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Machinist and Turner, or an apprenticeship, or a three-year diploma in mechanical, electrical, electronics or automobile engineering, or a relevant degree.

Item CEN 01/2026 as recorded
Vacancies across all boards 11,127
Pay Level 2, starting basic Rs 19,900
Age 18 to 30 as on 1 July 2026
Application dates 15.05.2026 to 14.06.2026; closed
Fee Rs 500 (Rs 400 refunded); Rs 250 for special groups
Stages CBT-1, CBT-2, Computer Based Aptitude Test, document verification, medical examination
Negative marking One third in CBT-1 and CBT-2; none in the aptitude test

The medical standard for this post is strict, particularly eyesight, and candidates who have had corrective eye surgery need to read the declaration in the notification. Railway technician notices also exist, but their eligibility was not checked here, so use the notice itself.

The GATE route

GATE is conducted by the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science in turn. The score is used for M.Tech admission and by some public sector undertakings for engineer trainee recruitment. Which undertakings accept it varies by year. The GATE 2027 official site could not be opened for this post, so no dates or fees are given. A GATE score is not needed for Andhra Pradesh AEE or AE posts, which use the Commission's or the utilities' own tests. Preparing for GATE from the third year of B.Tech also builds the technical base that the AEE and utility exams reward.

Branch rules

Branch conditions disqualify more candidates than any other clause, so read them early.

Branch Where it fits
Civil APPSC AEE, APPSC AE (water resources, rural water supply, Panchayat Raj), APGENCO and discom AEE (Civil), RRB JE (Civil and allied)
Mechanical APPSC AEE, APPSC AE (Panchayat Raj), APGENCO AEE (Mechanical, separate test), RRB JE (Mechanical and allied)
Electrical and Electronics APGENCO, APTRANSCO and discom AEE (Electrical), RRB JE (Electrical and allied)
Electronics and Communication APGENCO AEE (Electronics list), RRB JE (Electronics and allied)
Computer Science APGENCO AEE (named in the electronics list)

Mind the date by which you must hold the degree. The APGENCO notification expects the degree on the date of the notification. The railway notices require the qualification by the last date of application and ask candidates awaiting results not to apply. A final-year student who applies before results is taking a risk.

Preparing the technical and general parts together

First look at the weight of each section. In the APGENCO test, 70 of 100 marks are core. In the railway CBT-2, 100 of 150 questions are technical. In the APPSC AEE scheme, 300 of 450 marks are engineering. In all of these, technical content is half to two thirds of the paper, so a sensible split of daily time is about 60 to 65 percent technical and 35 to 40 percent general.

Weeks Technical General and aptitude
1 to 3 Fundamentals of the first half of your branch (for Civil: strength of materials and fluid mechanics; for EEE: circuits and machines) Mathematics basics (percentages, ratios, time and work) and reasoning series
4 to 6 Remaining subjects (for Civil: structures, concrete and estimating; for EEE: power systems and control) General science at Class 10 level and computer basics
7 to 9 Revision and topic-wise questions Current affairs, Indian polity, history, geography and Andhra Pradesh topics
10 and 11 Previous papers and an error notebook English grammar, comprehension and data interpretation
12 Full-length mocks and time management Last revision of weak areas

Emphasis differs by exam. For the utilities, where there is no negative marking, attempt every question, and learn technical terms in English because the test is in English only. For the Commission's posts, which carry one third negative marking in the pattern examples, leave a question if you cannot remove at least two options, and read the Andhra Pradesh topics, such as the reorganisation Act and the state economy. For the railway tests, speed in mathematics and reasoning decides the first stage, so build calculation speed in the first four weeks, and do not skip the small sections of CBT-2 worth 20 marks.

Technical study habits

Write formulas in one notebook and review it weekly. Practise problems only after the concept is clear, because memorised formulas fail when the question is framed differently. A diploma candidate should note that the common paper for the Assistant Engineer post is at diploma standard, while degree candidates face deeper content in the AEE scheme. After each topic take a 20-question test and note whether each error was a concept gap, a calculation slip or haste.

A sample week for an electrical engineer

Day Technical (3.5 hours) General (2.5 hours)
Monday Circuits Mathematics and reasoning
Tuesday Electrical machines Current affairs
Wednesday Power systems General science and computers
Thursday Control systems English and reasoning
Friday Electronics basics Mathematics and data interpretation
Saturday Topic test and error analysis Polity, history, geography
Sunday Full-length mock Review of the mock and weak topics

Civil and mechanical candidates can swap in their own subjects. The important habit is a test and an error review at the end of each week. If you can study for six hours a day, the table fits; if you have less, extend the number of weeks.

Mistakes to avoid when applying

Mistake Why it hurts
Applying before the result of your final exam Railway notices say candidates awaiting results must not apply
Applying to more than one Railway Recruitment Board Applications can be rejected
Wrong preferences in the utility application They cannot be changed later
Missing the fee or the deadline The application is incomplete, and the APGENCO fee is not refunded
Seeking recommendations The APGENCO notification warns of permanent disqualification
Trusting dates on unofficial sites Wrong dates; use the official site

For the Commission, complete the one-time profile registration first. It is a profile, not an application, and you log in with it for each notification.

Pay at a glance

Post Notification Pay stated in the notification
APPSC Assistant Engineer 20/2025 Rs 48,440 to Rs 1,37,220 (RPS 2022)
APPSC Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil, Rural Water Supply) 17/2025 Rs 57,100 to Rs 1,47,760 (RPS 2022)
APPSC Lecturer in Polytechnic Colleges 13/2023 Rs 56,100 to Rs 98,400 (AICTE 2016 scales)
APGENCO AEE 01/CGM (Adm, IS&ERP)/2026 Consolidated Rs 75,000 per month during probation, then the Revised Pay Scale 2022
Railway Junior Engineer CEN 04/2026 Level 6, starting basic Rs 35,400
Railway Assistant Loco Pilot CEN 01/2026 Level 2, starting basic Rs 19,900

These are the scales in each notification. Allowances depend on the post and place. Salary should not be the only criterion: place of posting, nature of work and promotion prospects matter too.

Choosing your route

Ask three questions. What is your qualification? A B.Tech graduate can look at AEE, AE, lecturer and utility posts. A diploma holder can look at some Assistant Engineer posts and railway Junior Engineer. An ITI holder can look at railway Assistant Loco Pilot and technician posts. Do you want to stay in the state? If yes, prioritise the Commission and the utilities; railway postings can be anywhere in India. How much time do you have? An exam such as AEE benefits from three to four months of technical preparation for a candidate with a good base, and more for a weak one, while the railway first stage needs speed practice early.

A single technical base serves the utility test, the Commission's engineering papers and the railway second stage, so one strong preparation covers three exams, and general sections such as current affairs, reasoning and basic science overlap too.

Where to track notices

Body Where to look What to look for
APPSC psc.ap.gov.in New notifications, exam dates, keys
APGENCO apgenco.gov.in recruitment page AEE notices, results
Power utilities apvidyutrecruitment.apcfss.in Applications, scores, next stages
Railways Your chosen Railway Recruitment Board site CEN notices, exam dates

Check twice a week while a recruitment is live, read the full notification, and use the contact details in it if you have a doubt.

Diploma holders

There is a belief that diploma holders have few options. In fact railway Junior Engineer posts accept a diploma, and some Commission Assistant Engineer posts do too. But the diploma named in the notification must match yours; a Licentiate in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from the State Board is named in some posts. If yours is not named, submit the government equivalence order within the time given. Work experience adds to your profile but is not a condition in these notifications.
