Arunachal TET (APTET) 2026: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation Guide
Start a free mock test Practice by topic

A school in Arunachal Pradesh can be a single building on a ridge with a few dozen children, some of whom walk for an hour to reach it. Classes may be small, the children may speak Nyishi, Adi, Apatani, Monpa, Wancho or another mother tongue at home, and Hindi and English may both be new to them. A teacher in such a setting needs more than knowledge of a subject. The teacher needs an understanding of how young children learn and how to teach across languages. The Teacher Eligibility Test is a step meant to check that understanding, and for many aspiring teachers in the state, it is the first door.

This guide explains the Arunachal TET, often referred to as APTET, in plain terms. Be aware at the outset that the test has not been held on a fixed yearly calendar, that the conducting body and details can change, and that I will not invent a date, fee or mark. The structure described below follows the national framework of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), which state tests are expected to follow. Confirm every detail in the current official notification.

Latest Notification and How the Test Works

A Teacher Eligibility Test is not a recruitment exam by itself. It is a qualifying test. Passing it makes you eligible to be considered for appointment as a teacher, but does not give you a job. A separate recruitment process for teacher posts follows when the education department has vacancies. For that reason, the TET is best treated as a certificate that you obtain and keep, and then use when recruitment opens.

Key points on how it works:

  • The test is meant to be conducted by the appropriate government, which in this case is the Government of Arunachal Pradesh through its education department or an authority designated by it. Who exactly conducts it in a given year should be checked in the notice.
  • The state has held the test irregularly. A gap of a year or more between two editions is possible. Some candidates also use the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education and is valid across the country for central government schools, and, depending on the state's rules, may also be accepted by the state. Read the eligibility clause in the recruitment advertisement to see which certificates are accepted.
  • Under the NCTE guidelines, a TET certificate is valid for life. The earlier seven-year validity limit was removed. Check how the state treats older certificates.
  • The qualifying mark under the national framework is 60 percent for general candidates, with relaxation for reserved categories and persons with disabilities. State rules may differ, so check the exact numbers in the notification.

What the Job of a Teacher Looks Like

The TET is meant for those who intend to be teachers in classes 1 to 8 (elementary stage). A teacher in a government elementary school in Arunachal Pradesh may:

  • Teach several subjects to different classes, sometimes in one room. Multi-grade teaching is common in small schools.
  • Use mother tongue, Hindi and English together to make lessons understandable. Hindi is widely used as a link language across the state, while English is the official language.
  • Prepare lessons, use local examples such as rivers, forests and festivals, and assess children through continuous evaluation.
  • Keep attendance and records, take part in school management committee meetings and coordinate with parents, often on foot.
  • Support midday meal and other school programmes, and prepare children for scholarships and admission tests.

Because of the terrain, teaching in Arunachal Pradesh can mean a posting in a remote place. This should be part of your thinking, since the eligibility test is only the beginning.

Paper I and Paper II

The national framework recognises two papers.

Paper For classes Typical candidate
Paper I 1 to 5 (primary) Class 12 pass with a recognised elementary teacher training qualification
Paper II 6 to 8 (upper primary) Graduate with B.Ed or an equivalent qualification recognised by NCTE

If you want to teach classes 1 to 8, you can appear in both papers and qualify in each.

Eligibility

For Paper I

The commonly required qualification is Senior Secondary (Class 12) with a stated minimum of marks and a recognised elementary teacher education qualification, such as a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) or a Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) or an equivalent recognised programme. Percentage requirements vary by category. Candidates in the final year of the programme are sometimes allowed to appear, on the condition that they complete it.

For Paper II

A bachelor's degree with a minimum percentage and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), or a four-year integrated programme, or an equivalent qualification recognised by NCTE. The notification states the required percentage for each category, and the subject combinations, if any.

Residence and Category

A TET is usually open to eligible candidates without a strict domicile clause, but the state's notice may state otherwise, and later recruitment for teaching posts can have its own rules on residence, Scheduled Tribe status and Permanent Residence Certificate. I am not certain how these are applied in each cycle, so please read the current notice and confirm with the education department. Keep your certificates ready, including any tribe or residence certificates issued by the competent authority.

Age

For a certificate test, there is normally no upper age limit, but check the notice.

Application Process

  1. Watch for the notification on the official website of the conducting authority and in local newspapers.
  2. Register with a valid mobile number and email address on the portal specified.
  3. Fill out personal, educational and category details and choose Paper I, Paper II or both.
  4. Upload photograph, signature and documents in the required formats.
  5. Pay the fee as stated. I am not quoting a figure, because the fee changes by cycle and category.
  6. Download the admit card and confirm the centre. Since centres are generally in district headquarters, plan the journey early in monsoon months.

Selection Stages

There is a single stage, a written test, followed by a result that indicates pass or fail. Merit ranking is not generally the purpose. Some state authorities publish marks and certificates. After that, when a recruitment for teachers is announced, additional requirements can apply, such as document verification, a merit list built on academic marks and the TET score, or an interview.

Exam Pattern (Typical Structure, Verify in Notification)

The structure below follows the NCTE model that the CTET and most state TETs use. Whether Arunachal follows the same numbers should be confirmed in the notification.

Paper I (classes 1 to 5) Questions
Child Development and Pedagogy 30
Language I 30
Language II 30
Mathematics 30
Environmental Studies 30
Paper II (classes 6 to 8) Questions
Child Development and Pedagogy 30
Language I 30
Language II 30
Mathematics and Science, or Social Studies 60

In the national model, each question carries one mark, the paper has 150 questions, the duration is two and a half hours and there is no negative marking. Confirm these in the current notice, since a state can vary them.

Detailed Syllabus and How to Approach It

Child Development and Pedagogy

This section is the same for both papers, and it is where many candidates lose easy marks. Learn the concepts and be able to apply them to a classroom situation.

  • Development: growth versus development, stages of development, principles, and the influence of heredity and environment.
  • Piaget: the four stages: sensorimotor (birth to about 2 years), pre-operational (about 2 to 7), concrete operational (about 7 to 11) and formal operational (about 11 and above). Know schemas, assimilation, accommodation and equilibration.
  • Vygotsky: the social basis of learning, the zone of proximal development, scaffolding and the role of language.
  • Kohlberg: the three levels of moral development (pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional).
  • Erikson and others: stages of psychosocial development, Bandura's social learning, Skinner's operant conditioning, Pavlov's classical conditioning and Thorndike's laws of learning.
  • Intelligence: Gardner's multiple intelligences, Spearman and Thurstone's models, emotional intelligence.
  • Learning and motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, Maslow's hierarchy, transfer of learning, memory and forgetting.
  • Inclusive education: concepts of disability, giftedness, learning difficulties such as dyslexia, and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 at a basic level.
  • Assessment: formative and summative, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic tests and remedial teaching.
  • Right to Education: Article 21A, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 for children aged 6 to 14, the prohibition of corporal punishment and the role of school management committees.
  • National Education Policy 2020: the 5+3+3+4 structure, the stress on foundational literacy and numeracy, and the preference for the mother tongue or local language as the medium of instruction at least up to Grade 5, and preferably up to Grade 8, wherever possible.

Language I and Language II

Usually one language is the medium of instruction and the other is a second language, and the notice states the options. In Arunachal Pradesh, English is the official language and Hindi is the common link language. Candidates should check which languages are offered, since tribal languages may not be tested. Each language section has two parts: comprehension and grammar (or reading and writing skills) and pedagogy of language development.

For English or Hindi at the elementary level, prepare:

  • Unseen passages and poems with questions on meaning, inference and vocabulary.
  • Grammar: parts of speech, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, sentence types.
  • Pedagogy: how children acquire language, the role of listening and speaking before reading and writing, the difference between acquisition and learning, multilingual classrooms, the use of the mother tongue as a resource, the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), the role of literature and the problems in teaching grammar as a set of rules.

Mathematics

For Paper I, mathematics content is from Class 1 to 5 level: numbers and operations, fractions, decimals, measurement (length, weight, capacity, time, money), geometry (shapes), patterns and data handling. Pedagogy covers the nature of mathematics, the use of concrete objects and the place-value idea, common errors and remedial teaching.

For Paper II, add content up to Class 8: algebra, mensuration, ratio and proportion, percentage, profit and loss, simple interest, linear equations, geometry and data handling. Study the pedagogy of mathematics as well: problem solving, mathematical communication, the role of mistakes and the use of the environment for mathematics.

Environmental Studies (Paper I)

Family and friends, food, shelter, water, travel, things we make and do, plants and animals, and the local environment. In an Arunachal context, know the state's variety of climate and landscape and how the environment affects daily life. Pedagogy of EVS covers the concept and scope of environmental studies, the integrated approach, activities, field visits, and the role of the environment as a resource.

Science and Social Studies (Paper II)

Candidates choose Mathematics and Science if they intend to teach these subjects, or Social Studies. Science covers physics, chemistry and biology up to Class 8, with pedagogy on the nature of science, the scientific method, laboratory work and misconceptions. Social studies covers history, geography, civics and economics up to Class 8, with pedagogy on the meaning of social studies, enquiry, sources and the role of local history.

Local Awareness for Arunachal Candidates

While the paper is not a general knowledge test, examples in questions and interviews often use local contexts. It helps to know a few facts about the state.

  • Arunachal Pradesh became a state on 20 February 1987, as the 24th state. Before that it was the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), then a Union Territory from 1972.
  • The capital is Itanagar, and the state has several districts. The exact number has increased over time, so confirm the current figure before you quote it.
  • English is the official language of the state.
  • Major tribal communities include the Adi, Nyishi, Apatani, Galo, Monpa, Mishmi groups, Tagin, Wancho, Nocte, Tangsa and Sherdukpen. The list is long, and tribes have different languages and festivals.
  • Well-known festivals include Losar (Monpa), Solung (Adi), Nyokum (Nyishi), Dree (Apatani) and Mopin (Galo).
  • Tawang Monastery is often described as the largest monastery in India.

Salary and Career Growth

A person who qualifies in the TET and is appointed as a teacher in a government school enters the state's teacher pay structure, with allowances as per rules. Since I cannot state the exact pay level, check it in the recruitment advertisement. Elementary teachers are promoted as per the service rules to senior teacher or head teacher positions, and graduates can move to secondary school posts as per eligibility. Some teachers also prepare for departmental exams or for other state services. Many combine teaching with further studies to move to higher levels.

Previous-Year Trends

I cannot cite cut-offs and pass percentages for Arunachal, because I do not have verified data. The following observations apply to teacher eligibility tests in general.

  • The pass percentage in TETs is often low, mostly because of Child Development and Pedagogy and the language sections, where candidates do not prepare for application-based questions.
  • Questions in pedagogy are scenario-based: they describe a classroom situation and ask what a teacher should do, and the best answer is the child-centred one.
  • Mathematics and EVS are usually at the level of the school textbook, but they test understanding rather than memory.
  • In many states, the TET score forms part of the merit for teacher recruitment. Where that happens, a score above the pass mark can matter.

Worked Practice Questions

Q1. According to Piaget, a child who can think logically about concrete objects but cannot reason abstractly is in which stage? Answer: Concrete operational stage. Explanation: This stage is about 7 to 11 years. The formal operational stage, which begins around 11 or 12, brings abstract and hypothetical thinking.

Q2. Vygotsky's "zone of proximal development" refers to: Answer: The gap between what a child can do alone and what the child can do with help from a more capable person. Explanation: Teaching should aim at this zone, with scaffolding that is gradually withdrawn.

Q3. Article 21A of the Constitution provides for: Answer: Free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14 years. Explanation: It was inserted by the 86th Constitutional Amendment in 2002, and the RTE Act 2009 gives it effect.

Q4. A teacher notices that a Class 3 child reverses letters such as b and d and reads slowly despite good speaking. The best first step is: Answer: Observe the child, note the pattern of difficulty, and provide remedial practice while consulting a specialist if needed, without labelling or punishing. Explanation: Such signs can indicate a learning difficulty like dyslexia. A child-centred and supportive response is expected in TET answers.

Q5. A shopkeeper sells a notebook at Rs 45 after giving a discount of 10 percent on the marked price. The marked price is: Answer: Rs 50. Explanation: The selling price is 90 percent of the marked price. So marked price = 45 / 0.9 = 50.

Q6. Which of these is the best example of formative assessment? (a) Annual examination (b) Class observation and feedback during a lesson (c) Board examination (d) Entrance test Answer: (b). Explanation: Formative assessment takes place during learning and is used to improve teaching and learning, unlike summative assessment, which comes at the end.

Q7. Which sentence is grammatically correct? (a) Neither of the boys were present. (b) Neither of the boys was present. (c) Neither of the boy were present. (d) Neither the boys was present. Answer: (b). Explanation: "Neither" takes a singular verb, so "was" is correct, and "of the" needs a plural noun, boys.

Q8. Which of the following is the most suitable way to teach the concept of a fraction like half to Class 2 children? Answer: Use concrete objects such as folding a chapati or paper into two equal parts. Explanation: Young children learn mathematical ideas best from concrete experience before symbols, in line with the concrete operational stage.

Q9. The mother tongue is best used in the early years of school because: Answer: Children understand concepts more easily and build a base for learning other languages. Explanation: This is the position of the National Education Policy 2020 and of the framework that recommends home language use in early grades.

Q10. A train 150 m long passes a pole in 15 seconds. What is its speed in km per hour? Answer: 36 km per hour. Explanation: Speed = 150 / 15 = 10 m per second. Multiply by 18/5 to convert: 10 × 3.6 = 36 km per hour.

Month-by-Month Preparation Plan

Since the date of the test can be uncertain, a four-month plan can be used and stretched as needed.

Month 1: Child development and pedagogy. Read the basic theories one by one. Make a table with the theorist, the key idea and an example. Read the RTE Act 2009 and NEP 2020 summaries. Solve 20 pedagogy questions a day, and note why each wrong option is wrong.

Month 2: Languages and mathematics. For each language, read one passage a day and revise grammar. Learn the pedagogy of language teaching. Revise elementary mathematics from textbooks of classes 1 to 8, as required for your paper, and solve problems daily.

Month 3: EVS or Science, Social Studies and pedagogy of subjects. Read the textbooks of the relevant classes, especially the Class 6 to 8 NCERT books for Paper II. Study the pedagogy sections of each subject. Begin sectional tests.

Month 4: Full mocks and revision. Take a full-length test every three or four days, in exam timing. Analyse errors. Revise your pedagogy tables and formulas. In the last week, avoid new material and practice previous questions.

Books and Resources

  • NCERT textbooks for classes 1 to 8, especially mathematics, EVS, science and social science, since questions follow them.
  • NCERT and NCF materials on child development, inclusive education and language teaching, and the summary of the RTE Act and NEP 2020.
  • A good TET-oriented book on child development and pedagogy, plus previous question papers of CTET and state TETs.
  • The official website of the conducting authority for notices and any sample papers.
  • The syllabus in the notification, which should be your checklist.

Common Mistakes

  • Neglecting Child Development and Pedagogy, which is often the most decisive section.
  • Choosing answers based on personal opinion rather than child-centred educational principles.
  • Learning theories without examples.
  • Ignoring the pedagogy portion of language and mathematics.
  • Not checking whether the state accepts a CTET certificate and which certificate is needed for the post.
  • Misreading the qualification norms for Paper I and Paper II.
  • Waiting for the notice before starting, then attempting to learn the whole syllabus in a month.

How TET Compares with Other Arunachal Exams

Exam Difference
APPSC CCE An officer recruitment exam with a large syllabus; TET is a teaching eligibility test
Arunachal Graduate Teacher A recruitment for a teaching post; TET is often a prerequisite
APPSC Assistant Professor College teaching, requiring a postgraduate degree and NET or equivalent
Arunachal Police Constable A uniformed job with a physical stage, unrelated to teaching

Final Word

The Teacher Eligibility Test rewards a certain way of thinking: put the child first, understand how children learn, and keep the explanation simple. If you prepare Child Development and Pedagogy with the same seriousness as your subject knowledge, you will be well placed, whenever the notice comes. The mock tests on pareeksha.in can give you timed practice on a paper of this type, but the state's official notification remains the authority on dates, fees and rules.
