The Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test, known as HTET, is the gateway exam for anyone who wants to teach in Haryana's government and government-aided schools. It is conducted by the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH), whose headquarters are in Bhiwani. HTET is not a recruitment exam by itself: passing it makes you eligible to apply for teacher posts, and the actual selection is done by the recruiting agency in separate exams and merit lists. That difference matters. Many aspirants misunderstand HTET as a job exam, prepare for it once and stop, when in fact it is the first of two steps, and its score and certificate remain useful only if you follow through with the recruitment stage.
The test covers three levels that correspond to the classes you want to teach: Level 1 for Primary Teachers (PRT), Level 2 for Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) and Level 3 for Post Graduate Teachers (PGT). This guide explains what each level means, who can appear, how the paper is structured, and how to prepare for the child development and pedagogy portion, which is common to all levels and where a large number of marks are decided. As always, dates, fees and exact pattern details come from the official notification of BSEH (bseh.org.in), and this guide points out where you must verify them.
Latest Notification and How the Cycle Works
BSEH announces HTET at intervals that are not fixed. In some years the test has been held once, and there have been long gaps between cycles. The general pattern of a cycle is:
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| Notification | BSEH publishes eligibility, levels, dates and fees |
| Online application | Registration, level selection, photograph, signature and fee |
| Admit card | Released before the exam, with centre and timing |
| Exam | Held level-wise, sometimes on different days or in different shifts |
| Answer key and objections | Provisional key released; a period is given for objections, sometimes with a fee |
| Result and certificate | Score and eligibility certificate issued to qualified candidates |
Candidates should check the Board's official website for the current notification rather than rely on secondhand dates. Because a single candidate may be eligible for more than one level, the notification also explains how to apply for multiple levels and whether they can be attempted on the same day.
What the Three Levels Mean
| Level | Teaching stage | Post |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Classes 1 to 5 (primary) | Primary Teacher (PRT) |
| Level 2 | Classes 6 to 8 (upper primary) | Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) |
| Level 3 | Classes 9 to 12 (secondary and senior secondary) | Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) |
A teacher's day involves planning lessons, teaching, assessing students, maintaining records, meeting parents and taking part in school programmes. At the primary level, a PRT usually teaches many subjects to one class, handles a wide age range and pays special attention to reading and number skills. A TGT teaches a subject group to middle classes. A PGT specialises in one subject for senior classes and often prepares students for board examinations.
Recruitment After HTET
HTET qualification is a requirement for applying to government teacher posts in Haryana. The recruitment stage is handled separately, generally by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission for PRT and TGT posts and by the Haryana Public Service Commission for PGT and lecturer-level posts, though the assigning of these responsibilities can change. Some cycles have used the HTET score as a component of merit, while others have used separate screening tests. Check the recruitment advertisement, not just the HTET notification, so you know how your HTET result will actually be used. You can read about the state's other routes in HSSC CET Group C and Haryana HCS (Executive) and Allied Services.
Eligibility
Eligibility varies by level, and the norms follow the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) framework together with Haryana's own rules. The typical requirements are:
Level 1 (PRT). Senior secondary (Class 12) with a minimum percentage as specified, along with an elementary teacher-training qualification such as a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) or a Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed), or other qualifications that the NCTE recognises. Some qualifications may be accepted with additional conditions.
Level 2 (TGT). A bachelor's degree with a specified minimum percentage and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or an equivalent qualification recognised by the NCTE. Subject requirements depend on the subject group you want to teach.
Level 3 (PGT). A master's degree in the relevant subject with a minimum percentage and a B.Ed or equivalent.
Relaxation in minimum marks is usually given to reserved categories and persons with disabilities. Final-year students of the teacher-training course are sometimes allowed to apply with a condition, and the notification will say whether that applies. Hindi or Sanskrit at matriculation level is also commonly required for Haryana teaching posts. Since these rules are revised, read the current version.
There is normally no upper age limit for appearing in HTET itself, but there will be an upper age limit when applying for teacher recruitment. Check both.
Application Process
- Visit the official BSEH website and open the HTET registration link when it is live.
- Register with your name, date of birth and contact details exactly as in your certificates.
- Select the level or levels, and for Level 2 and Level 3 select the subject group as asked.
- Upload your photograph and signature in the specified format.
- Pay the fee. The fee depends on category and on the number of levels. Verify the amount in the notification.
- Submit and keep a copy of the application form.
- Download the admit card when released, and check the centre and reporting time.
Common errors include choosing the wrong subject group, spelling differences from the certificate, and uploading an unclear signature. Use the correction window if one is offered.
Exam Pattern (Typical Structure, Verify in Notification)
HTET has generally been conducted as an objective multiple-choice test. Recent patterns have been described as follows, but check the current notification for confirmation.
| Feature | Typical structure |
|---|---|
| Questions per level | Around 150 multiple-choice questions |
| Marks | One mark per question, 150 in total |
| Duration | About two and a half hours |
| Negative marking | Generally none in recent cycles, verify |
| Languages | Language sections in Hindi and English (and other languages where the subject requires) |
| Minimum passing marks | Around 60 percent for the general category, with a lower percentage for reserved categories, verify |
Section Structure by Level
| Level | Typical sections |
|---|---|
| Level 1 (PRT) | Child development and pedagogy, language sections (Hindi and English), mathematics, environmental studies, sometimes Haryana-related awareness |
| Level 2 (TGT) | Child development and pedagogy, language sections, and a larger subject block for either mathematics and science, or social studies, or a language, according to your subject group |
| Level 3 (PGT) | Language sections and a large subject-specific block covering the subject at graduation and post-graduation level, with pedagogy as applicable |
The number of questions per section and whether pedagogy appears in Level 3 have differed between cycles. Do not assume: read the Board's scheme.
Certificate Validity
An HTET qualification certificate is issued to those who reach the pass mark. NCTE guidelines have provided for the TET certificate to be valid for a long period, and in recent years lifetime validity has been adopted in many states. Confirm with the latest BSEH notification how long your certificate is valid and what the rules are for re-appearing to improve a score.
Detailed Syllabus
Child Development and Pedagogy (All Levels)
This is the common section and the one where a focused candidate can score most reliably.
Development. Concepts of growth and development, stages from infancy to adolescence, heredity and environment, and factors affecting development.
Theories.
- Piaget's cognitive development: sensorimotor (birth to about 2 years), pre-operational (about 2 to 7), concrete operational (about 7 to 11) and formal operational (about 11 onwards). Key ideas include schema, assimilation, accommodation, equilibration and conservation.
- Vygotsky: the social-constructivist view; Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), scaffolding and the role of language and culture.
- Kohlberg's moral development: three levels (pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional), each with two stages.
- Erikson's psychosocial stages, Bruner's discovery learning, Bandura's social learning and Skinner's operant conditioning, Pavlov's classical conditioning and Thorndike's laws of learning.
- Gardner's multiple intelligences and Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Learning and teaching. Motivation, individual differences, learning styles, memory and forgetting, transfer of learning, problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking. Teaching methods and aids, lesson planning, classroom management.
Assessment. Formative and summative evaluation, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic and remedial teaching, use of portfolios and rubrics, and Bloom's taxonomy in its revised form (remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate, create).
Inclusive education. Children with special needs, learning disabilities, giftedness, and the principles of inclusion. Also gender and socio-cultural issues in the classroom.
Policy and law. Article 21A and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (in force since April 2010, covering children aged 6 to 14), the National Curriculum Framework, and the National Education Policy 2020 with its 5+3+3+4 structure, foundational literacy and numeracy emphasis and multilingual approach. Keep the key features of each in short notes.
Languages
Hindi. Vyakaran (sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay, karak, vachya), shabd bhed, alankar, ras, chhand at a basic level, muhavare and lokoktiyan, ashuddhi shodhan, unseen passage and pedagogy of Hindi teaching (listening, speaking, reading and writing skills).
English. Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, error spotting and fill in the blanks, and pedagogy of language teaching, including the difference between language acquisition and learning, the role of the mother tongue and the four language skills.
Other languages. Sanskrit, Urdu or Punjabi may be offered as language options depending on the notification, with grammar, literature and pedagogy components.
Mathematics (Level 1, and Level 2 Maths and Science group)
Number system, fractions and decimals, ratio and percentage, geometry and mensuration, data handling, algebra basics, plus pedagogy of mathematics: error analysis, use of concrete material, problem-solving approaches, and the nature of mathematical thinking. For Level 2, content goes up to the upper primary and secondary school syllabus.
Environmental Studies and Science
Living things, food and health, water, air, shelter, family and community for Level 1. For Level 2 science: physics, chemistry and biology topics up to Class 10 with pedagogical aspects such as the scientific method, concept maps and demonstrations.
Social Studies (Level 2)
History, geography, civics and economics up to Class 10, with the Haryana angle: the formation of the state in 1966, the geography and culture of Haryana, and the pedagogy of social science (use of maps, timelines, sources, and role play).
Subject Content (Level 3)
The PGT paper depends on the subject: for example Hindi, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Commerce, Computer Science and others as listed in the notification. The content is at graduation to post-graduation level, so use university-level texts for your subject, and give time to past-paper patterns.
Haryana-Related Awareness
Some sections have included questions on Haryana's history, culture, geography, personalities and education-related facts. A few hours per week of Haryana GK revision is sufficient.
Salary and Career Growth
Salary depends on the recruitment post and pay level, not on HTET itself. In Haryana, teachers are on the state pay matrix with allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance. Levels rise from PRT to TGT to PGT, and promotion routes exist within the Education Department, for example from PRT or TGT to higher posts through departmental rules, and to Lecturer or Principal roles. Always read the recruitment advertisement for the exact pay level of the post.
Previous-Year Trends
- HTET is highly competitive because lakhs of candidates apply, and the number of those who qualify has varied from cycle to cycle depending on the paper's difficulty.
- The child development and pedagogy section has been a stable scoring area for prepared candidates, and it is also where many underprepared candidates lose marks by relying on common sense rather than on the theories.
- Language sections often have straightforward grammar questions together with pedagogy questions on the teaching of the language.
- At Level 3, subject knowledge decides the outcome, and a candidate who is weak in the subject cannot make up for it through pedagogy alone.
- Since the pass mark is a percentage of the total, some cycles have seen a large fraction of candidates fall short by a few marks, which is why steady accuracy matters.
Worked Practice Questions
Q1. According to Piaget, the ability to understand conservation develops in which stage? (a) Sensorimotor (b) Pre-operational (c) Concrete operational (d) Formal operational Answer: (c) Concrete operational. Explanation: Children aged about 7 to 11 grasp that quantity remains the same despite changes in shape, which is conservation. Pre-operational children usually fail conservation tasks.
Q2. The Zone of Proximal Development is associated with which psychologist? Answer: Lev Vygotsky. Explanation: ZPD is the gap between what a learner can do alone and what he or she can do with guidance. The support given by a teacher or peer is called scaffolding.
Q3. Which Article of the Constitution makes elementary education a Fundamental Right, and for which age group? Answer: Article 21A, for children aged 6 to 14. Explanation: It was inserted by the 86th Constitutional Amendment (2002), and the RTE Act, 2009 gives effect to it. The Act came into force on 1 April 2010.
Q4. The school structure proposed by NEP 2020 is: (a) 10+2 (b) 5+3+3+4 (c) 6+3+3 (d) 8+4 Answer: (b) 5+3+3+4. Explanation: It covers the foundational stage (5 years), preparatory stage (3), middle stage (3) and secondary stage (4), replacing the earlier 10+2 structure in policy terms.
Q5. Kohlberg's theory of moral development has how many levels? Answer: Three, namely pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional. Explanation: Each level has two stages, giving six stages in all.
Q6. In the revised Bloom's taxonomy, which is the highest cognitive level? Answer: Create. Explanation: The order from lowest to highest is remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate and create.
Q7. Add: 3/4 + 2/3. Answer: 17/12, or 1 5/12. Explanation: The common denominator is 12. 3/4 = 9/12 and 2/3 = 8/12. The sum is 17/12.
Q8. If x + 1/x = 5, what is the value of x squared plus 1/x squared? Answer: 23. Explanation: Square both sides: x² + 2 + 1/x² = 25. So x² + 1/x² = 25 − 2 = 23.
Q9. Identify the figure of speech in "चारु चंद्र की चंचल किरणें, खेल रही हैं जल थल में". Answer: Anupras (alliteration). Explanation: The sound "च" repeats several times in the line, which is the mark of anupras alankar.
Q10. Which of the following is a receptive language skill? (a) Speaking (b) Writing (c) Listening (d) Drawing Answer: (c) Listening. Explanation: Listening and reading are receptive skills, where the learner takes in language. Speaking and writing are productive skills.
Q11. Which gas do plants take in from the air for photosynthesis? Answer: Carbon dioxide. Explanation: Plants use carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to produce glucose and release oxygen.
Q12. Where is the headquarters of the Board of School Education Haryana? Answer: Bhiwani. Explanation: BSEH conducts the Class 10 and 12 board exams and HTET, and it is located in Bhiwani.
How to Prepare for Pedagogy Without Memorising Blindly
Pedagogy questions are often situational: a classroom scene is described, and you choose the best teacher response. A memory of names and dates is not enough. A better approach follows four steps.
Learn each theory as a pair: idea and classroom use. For example, Vygotsky's ZPD leads to scaffolding and group work; Piaget's concrete operational stage leads to hands-on material for primary maths; Skinner's reinforcement leads to timely praise; Bandura's modelling leads to the teacher's own behaviour.
Prefer the child-centred answer. In most situational questions the correct option is the one that respects the learner, uses activity or discussion, avoids punishment and labels, and connects with the child's environment.
Remember the distinctions. Formative versus summative evaluation, learning disability versus intellectual disability, and acquisition versus learning of language are typical pairs that questions test.
Practise with short daily sets. Twenty pedagogy questions a day for four weeks builds a reliable base at all levels.
Month-by-Month Preparation Plan (Four to Six Months)
- Month 1: Read the syllabus for your level. Take a diagnostic mock. Start child development and pedagogy notes. Revise language basics.
- Month 2: Complete pedagogy theories, and practise situational questions. Begin subject preparation (mathematics, science, social studies or your PGT subject).
- Month 3: Deep work on the subject block, with daily practice sets. Language grammar and pedagogy of language.
- Month 4: Policy and law topics: RTE Act, NEP 2020, inclusive education. Haryana GK. Weekly sectional tests.
- Month 5: Full-length mocks twice a week, and analysis of errors by topic.
- Month 6: Revision of notes, formula sheets and previous-question patterns. Rest well before the exam.
Since there is often no negative marking, plan to attempt every question. Time management is the main challenge for a 150-question test in about two and a half hours: aim for about one minute per question on average, and leave the last ten minutes for marking any unattempted ones.
Books and Resources
- NCERT textbooks for Classes 1 to 10 in maths, science and social science, with their teacher-guide portions for pedagogy ideas.
- A standard textbook on educational psychology and child development.
- Hindi and English grammar and pedagogy books.
- University-level texts in your subject for Level 3.
- The text of the RTE Act, 2009 and a summary of NEP 2020 from official sources.
- BSEH's official notification for the syllabus and pattern.
- Timed mocks on pareeksha.in to practise pacing.
Common Mistakes
- Treating HTET as the final step, and forgetting to track the recruitment advertisement.
- Choosing the wrong level or subject group in the application.
- Studying pedagogy by cramming names without linking them to classroom situations.
- Ignoring the language sections because they seem easy, and losing marks on grammar.
- Skipping mathematics basics at Level 1 and Level 2.
- Attempting the paper without a pacing plan.
- Overlooking the pass mark and focusing only on a rank.
Comparison with Other Haryana Exams
