A Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) in Haryana teaches the middle and secondary classes of government schools, typically Classes 6 to 10. It is a regular government teaching post with subject specialisation: you are recruited as a TGT in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Hindi, Sanskrit, Physical Education, and other subjects the department advertises. For a graduate with a B.Ed who prefers classroom teaching over administrative work, this is one of the most direct routes into a state government job.
This guide explains who can apply, how the process generally runs, what to study for each part of the paper, and how to plan the months before the exam. Wherever a fact depends on the current advertisement (which board conducts it, how many posts, what marks), we say so and do not guess.
Latest notification and how recruitment cycles work
Teacher recruitment in Haryana has moved between agencies over the years. Historically, school teacher posts were handled by HPSC for some cadres, and the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) has handled many teacher posts, including TGT, in recent cycles. Because responsibility can shift, this guide treats the recruitment as run through the Haryana school education department's selected agency. Confirm on the current advertisement whether HSSC, HPSC or the department itself is conducting the process.
How cycles work in practice:
- The Department of School Education sends a requisition of vacancies subject by subject.
- The commission publishes an advertisement with a subject-wise, category-wise breakup.
- You apply online, appear for the written test, and, depending on the notice, go through document verification and possibly a further stage.
- Results and merit lists are subject-wise, so you compete within your own subject.

What the job is and a day in the role
A TGT plans and delivers classes in one or two subjects to students of the middle and lower secondary stage. A weekly timetable is set by the school head, and it usually includes classroom periods, remedial or activity periods and duties such as morning assembly, invigilation, and evaluation of answer books.
What the role involves beyond teaching:
- Following the state syllabus and the SCERT Haryana textbooks, and now the shifts in the National Education Policy 2020, such as competency-based learning and formative assessment.
- Maintaining student records, assessments and attendance, and often using digital platforms for reporting.
- Working with parents, participating in School Management Committees, and supporting government schemes for students, such as scholarships and midday-meal supervision where assigned.
- Career-specific duties: a Science TGT may run a lab; a Physical Education TGT organises sports days and district-level meets; a Hindi or Sanskrit TGT may handle cultural events.
Postings are across districts and blocks, and transfers follow the state's teacher transfer policy. Rural postings are common in the first years.
Post and vacancy structure
Vacancy counts vary by cycle and subject, so we do not quote counts. The subject structure that is generally advertised:
| Category | Examples of subjects |
|---|---|
| Languages | English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Urdu (as advertised) |
| Sciences | Science, Mathematics |
| Social sciences | Social Studies |
| Skill subjects | Physical Education, Drawing, Music, Home Science, Agriculture, Computer (as advertised) |
Physical Education, drawing and some skill-based posts have their own qualification rules, sometimes with a different eligibility test from HTET. Read the subject clause in the advertisement.
Eligibility
Educational qualification
For a mainstream academic subject TGT, the requirement is generally:
- A Bachelor's degree with the relevant subject(s) as specified for the post (for example, Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry for a Science/Maths TGT combination; a degree with the language as a subject for language TGT).
- A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or an equivalent recognised teacher-education qualification (for example, the four-year integrated B.A. B.Ed. or B.Sc. B.Ed.), recognised by the NCTE.
- A pass in the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test (HTET) at the level meant for the post. In Haryana, Level 1 is for primary teachers, Level 2 for trained graduate teachers, and Level 3 for post-graduate teachers. So TGT candidates normally need HTET Level 2. Whether CTET Paper II is treated as equivalent is a point to verify in the current notification.
- Hindi or Sanskrit studied up to Matric, in line with the Haryana government's general requirement.
Because the subject combinations matter, many applications fail here. A B.Sc. with Zoology and Botany may not match a "Maths/Science" TGT requirement, and a general B.A. without English as a subject may need a check. Compare your own transcript with each line of the subject clause.
Age limit
There is a minimum age (commonly 18 or 21 depending on the notice) and a maximum age on a reckoning date. Relaxation applies to SC, BC, EWS, ESM, PwD and existing government employees as per state rules. Use the notice for exact numbers.
Nationality and domicile
Candidates must be Indian citizens. Haryana government recruitments often set out a preference or reservation for Haryana residents, and the certificate requirement depends on the category. Apply for the residence and category certificates early.
Application process
- Register on the official portal of the recruiting body, and fill in the profile once.
- Choose the advertisement and the subject, fill in academics, B.Ed. and HTET details.
- Upload photograph, signature and documents where requested.
- Pay the fee as per your category. Fees vary, so verify in the notification.
- Download the application and keep a copy of the receipt.
Documents: Class 10 certificate, graduation marksheets, B.Ed. degree and marksheets, HTET certificate, category and residence certificates, identity proof, and any experience certificate if marks are given for it. In Haryana, Group C and D recruitment has used a socio-economic and experience weightage (for example, additional marks for certain family income and experience conditions). Whether this applies to your teacher post depends on the specific notice, so check it and prepare the certificates if it does.
Selection stages
The selection stages have varied, so we describe the likely building blocks.
- Screening or eligibility. Your HTET certificate, B.Ed. and subject qualification are checked. In some cycles the HTET marks themselves carry weightage in the final merit, so a higher HTET score is a real advantage.
- Written test. An objective test with sections such as general awareness and reasoning, child development and pedagogy, language ability, and subject knowledge. Some cycles use one combined paper; others use a general screening test and then a subject paper.
- Document verification. Original certificates, category and residence proof.
- Merit list and allocation. Marks in the written test (and any weightage marks) decide rank, and postings are allotted according to vacancies.
Interviews are not always part of the process for teachers, but check the advertisement. Treat all of this as "typical structure, verify".

- Physical Education TGT: anatomy and physiology, sports training, rules of major games, health and nutrition, first aid, sports management and the Olympic movement.
Start by taking the syllabus listed in the advertisement and checking each item against the NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to Class 10, then the graduate-level level books for depth.
Exam pattern (typical structure, verify)
| Component | Typical structure |
|---|---|
| Mode | Objective written test (OMR/CBT as notified) |
| Sections | General awareness and reasoning, pedagogy, language, subject |
| Marking | Marks per question and negative marking as notified |
| Duration | As per admit card |
| HTET weightage | May be added in the merit calculation in some cycles (verify) |
Do not assume the pattern of an earlier cycle. Read the marks distribution in the advertisement and note how many questions each section carries.
Salary, pay level and career growth
TGT is a teaching post at the level sitting above primary teachers and below post-graduate teachers. The advertisement gives the pay level and the basic pay for the post, along with allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance as per state rules. The exact figure changes with pay revisions and department orders, so check the current notice and do not use a number from an old article.
Growth path: TGT to PGT through promotion (where the rules provide) and then to posts such as Lecturer, Head Master or Principal, subject to seniority and eligibility. Some teachers move to state training institutes (for example, DIET faculty) through selection. Teachers who complete additional qualifications, such as M.Ed. or a Master's degree with the required percentage, may become eligible for PGT roles, along with HTET Level 3.
Previous-year trend discussion
We do not quote cut-offs. What can be said qualitatively:
- Competition in TGT recruitment is high because the qualification pool (graduates with B.Ed. and HTET) is large, and posts per subject may be limited. English, Social Studies and Hindi typically draw many candidates.
- The pedagogy section and the language section are the fastest to score if you prepare well, and they are where many candidates lose marks through carelessness.
- Subject questions are usually at the level of the school curriculum with graduate-level depth, so NCERT clarity gives a solid base.
- Where HTET marks carry weightage, candidates who re-appeared for HTET to improve their score have sometimes gained an edge. Verify whether that applies.
- Haryana GK questions can be a differentiator, since many candidates from outside the state underprepare it.
Worked practice questions
Q1. According to Piaget, a child who can perform logical operations on concrete objects but struggles with abstract hypothetical reasoning is in which stage? Answer: Concrete operational stage (roughly 7 to 11 years). Formal operational thinking, which handles abstract and hypothetical reasoning, begins around 11 to 12 years.
Q2. Vygotsky's "Zone of Proximal Development" refers to: Answer: The gap between what a learner can do independently and what he or she can do with guidance from a more knowledgeable person. Teachers use scaffolding to help a child move through this zone.
Q3. At which level of Kohlberg's moral development does a person follow laws mainly to gain approval or maintain social order? Answer: The conventional level (stages 3 and 4). The post-conventional level involves acting on self-chosen ethical principles.
Q4. Find the compound interest on Rs 5,000 for 2 years at 10% per annum, compounded yearly. Amount = 5000 x 1.1 x 1.1 = 6050. Compound interest = 6050 - 5000 = Rs 1,050.
Q5. A train 120 m long passes a pole in 6 seconds. What is its speed in km/h? Speed = 120/6 = 20 m/s. Multiply by 18/5 to get 72 km/h.
Q6. Which article of the Constitution was inserted by the 86th Amendment to make elementary education a fundamental right? Answer: Article 21A, giving every child from 6 to 14 years the right to free and compulsory education. The RTE Act, 2009 came into force on 1 April 2010.
Q7. Which gas is released as a by-product during photosynthesis? Answer: Oxygen. The equation is 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy gives C6H12O6 + 6O2.
Q8. Choose the correct form: "Neither the teacher nor the students ___ present." Answer: "were" is generally used when the noun closest to the verb is plural (students). The rule is that with "neither...nor", the verb agrees with the nearer subject.
Q9. "यथाशक्ति" में कौन-सा समास है? उत्तर: अव्ययीभाव समास। इसका विग्रह है "शक्ति के अनुसार", और पहला पद "यथा" अव्यय है।
Q10. The Second Battle of Panipat was fought in 1556 between Akbar's forces (led by Bairam Khan) and which ruler? Answer: Hemu (Hem Chandra Vikramaditya). The First Battle of Panipat was in 1526 (Babur against Ibrahim Lodi) and the Third in 1761 (Ahmad Shah Abdali against the Marathas).
Month-by-month preparation plan
A six-month plan for a graduate with B.Ed. and HTET already in hand:
Month 1: Map the syllabus. Read the advertisement, list sections and marks, and take a diagnostic test. Revise HTET if your score can be improved and it carries weightage.
Month 2: Pedagogy and CDP. Cover developmental theories, learning theories, inclusive education, evaluation and the education acts. Make short notes with one line per theorist and an example.
Month 3: Language sections. English grammar and vocabulary daily; Hindi grammar; teaching methods for your language. Practise passages.
Month 4: Subject knowledge, first pass. Cover NCERT texts and graduate-level topics unit by unit; solve chapter-wise questions.
Month 5: Reasoning, maths, general awareness, Haryana GK. Alternate these with subject revision. Start weekly full mock tests.
Month 6: Full mock tests and revision. Two mocks a week, review errors, refresh formulae and short notes, and finish Haryana GK and current affairs.
Books and resources
- NCERT textbooks for Classes 6 to 10 in your subject, and graduate-level texts for depth.
- HTET/CTET guides for the pedagogy section, plus NCERT's handbooks and the NEP 2020 summary.
- A grammar book for English and a Hindi grammar book, both used with regular practice.
- A Haryana GK book or state government publications, along with a monthly current-affairs magazine.
- Previous HTET and teacher-recruitment papers. Timed practice on pareeksha.in helps with speed and self-checking.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring subject-clause rules: applying under a subject for which your degree combination does not qualify.
- Relying on old notes for the exam pattern.
- Studying theory without practising questions. The pedagogy section tests application, not just definitions.
- Neglecting the language and reasoning sections because "my subject is strong".
- Skipping Haryana GK and current affairs until the last weeks.
- Submitting the application with scanned documents that are unclear, or with a mismatch between certificates.
- Overlooking whether HTET marks carry weightage, and so failing to improve a weak HTET score when there is time.
Comparison with sibling Haryana exams

HTET is the base. If you have not cleared the right level, see the HTET guide before planning for TGT.
Frequently asked questions
Is HTET compulsory for TGT? Yes, for most academic-subject TGT posts the applicable HTET level is required. Check whether CTET is accepted as an equivalent.
Which HTET level is for TGT? Level 2 is for trained graduate teachers, but verify in the current notice.
Who conducts TGT recruitment in Haryana? It has been HSSC in recent cycles for many teacher posts, but the agency can change. Read the advertisement.
Can I apply for more than one subject? Only if you meet the subject's qualification and if the advertisement allows multiple applications.
Is there negative marking? Check the marking scheme in the advertisement.
Does B.Ed. from distance mode count? Only if the degree is NCTE-recognised and the advertisement accepts it. Verify the recognition status.
Is Haryana domicile compulsory? It depends on the advertisement. Some parts of the rules apply to residents for reservation or additional marks.
Are there separate posts for Physical Education? Yes, and their qualifications may differ from academic subjects.
What is the difference between TGT and PGT? TGT teaches middle and secondary classes and needs graduation. PGT teaches senior secondary classes and needs a Master's degree.
How many attempts do I get? Usually it is limited by the maximum age limit rather than the number of attempts.
