Haryana Police Constable is one of the most sought-after jobs among young people in the state, and it is easy to see why. It is a uniformed government job with a clear entry requirement of Class 12, a written test that is within the reach of an average student and a physical stage that rewards discipline. Recruitment is handled by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) for the Haryana Police department, and constables are recruited in male and female categories, with separate physical standards.

What makes this exam different from a clerk or Group D exam is that it has two halves that cannot be traded off against each other. A candidate who prepares only for the written test will find a physical stage waiting. A candidate who trains only for the running track will not be able to clear a competitive written test. This guide covers both halves. As always, dates, vacancy counts, fees and exact standards must be taken from the current official notification, not from a social media post.

Latest Notification and How the Cycle Works

Haryana Police constable recruitment is announced when the police department sends its requirements to HSSC. In recent years the Haryana government has routed a large part of Group C and constable recruitment through the Common Eligibility Test (CET), so the exact combination of written test and physical stages can differ between cycles. The stable structure looks like this:

Step Description
Notification Posts for male and female constables, sometimes with separate categories such as general duty or specialist units
Application Online on the HSSC portal, using family ID details where asked
Written stage An objective test (or the CET score, as the notification prescribes) used to rank candidates
Physical screening Height, chest (for male candidates) and weight where applicable, followed by an endurance test
Merit and documents Final merit list according to the notification's formula, then document verification
Medical Medical fitness check before joining
Training Basic training at a police training institution before regular duty

The order of the physical and written stages is set in each notification. In some cycles the physical stage is a qualifying screen that comes first, and in others it follows the written stage. Read the current advertisement carefully so that your training and your study schedule are timed correctly.

What a Constable Does

A constable is the backbone of policing. Duties include patrolling, maintaining law and order at fairs and gatherings, traffic regulation, guard and escort work, assisting investigation, serving summons and warrants under the direction of senior officers, and supporting the police station's routine work. Women constables handle a range of duties including women-related cases and assistance at public places.

The job has irregular hours and a share of hard duty during festivals, elections and emergencies. On the other side, the police service provides authority, a respected position in the community and stable career growth through ranks such as Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector and Sub-Inspector via departmental promotion and, for those who qualify, direct recruitment routes like Haryana Police Sub-Inspector.

Post and Vacancy Structure

Vacancies are declared in each notification, split between male and female constables and by category. Horizontal reservations, for instance for ex-servicemen and sportspersons, may also apply. Do not take a figure from any source other than the official advertisement.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

Class 12 (senior secondary) pass from a recognised board is the typical requirement. Confirm in the current advertisement whether any subject is specified. As with other Haryana government jobs, Hindi or Sanskrit up to matriculation is usually required.

Age Limit

The minimum age is generally 18. The upper limit for the general category has typically been in the mid-twenties, with relaxations for reserved categories, ex-servicemen and other groups. Check the exact figure and cut-off date in the notification.

Nationality and Domicile

Candidates should be Indian citizens. The state's rules on Haryana residents and reserved categories apply, and your Parivar Pehchan Patra (family ID) and category certificates need to be current. Confirm domicile-related rules in the current notice, as they have been revised in the past.

Physical Standards

The physical standards differ for male and female candidates. Recent notifications have used figures in the region of 170 cm for male and about 157 cm for female candidates, with a chest measurement requirement for male candidates, and relaxations for some categories. Because these numbers are revised, treat them only as an indication and read the precise standards in the notification.

Medical Standards

Common medical checks include eyesight (both distance vision and colour vision), no significant knock-knees, flat feet or squint, sound hearing, and absence of disabling conditions. Get an eye check early. Do not assume that a visual defect can be handled later.

Application Process

  1. Register on the HSSC portal and log in with the mobile number you will keep.
  2. Fill the application with your details exactly as in your certificates, and select male or female constable as applicable.
  3. Upload photograph, signature and documents.
  4. Pay the fee online. The fee depends on category and gender; verify in the notification.
  5. Save the final submitted form.
  6. Download the admit card for the written stage and, later, the call letter for the physical stage.

Selection Stages

Written stage. An objective test on general awareness, reasoning, arithmetic and language. It either comes through the CET score or as a separate test, depending on the notification.

Physical measurement. Height and chest (male) and any other measurements are checked. Candidates who do not meet the standards are not considered further, so know your measurements before applying.

Physical endurance test. A timed run is the core event. Depending on the notification, other events such as jump or throw may be included. The event list and qualifying times are notified and can change.

Merit list. Combines the written score with any other components set in the notification. Some cycles have treated the physical test as qualifying only.

Document verification and medical. Original certificates, category and residence proof, sports certificates if claimed, and a medical examination.

Exam Pattern (Typical Structure, Verify in Notification)

Feature Typical structure
Type Objective multiple choice
Questions Around one hundred
Time About one and a half hours
Negative marking A fraction of a mark per wrong answer, verify
Content Reasoning, arithmetic, general awareness including Haryana, Hindi and English
Physical test Qualifying or partly scoring, as notified

Detailed Syllabus

General Awareness and Haryana GK

  • Haryana: formation of the state on 1 November 1966, districts and headquarters, rivers (Yamuna, Ghaggar, Markanda), national parks (Kalesar, Sultanpur), major fairs (Surajkund, Gita Jayanti), folk forms, sports achievers, government schemes and the state symbols.
  • Police and law basics: rank structure (Constable, Head Constable, ASI, SI, Inspector, DSP), the fact that the criminal laws were reformed and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam came into force in July 2024 replacing the older IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act. Constable-level exams usually keep this at awareness depth.
  • India: polity basics, geography, history, national symbols, awards and sports.
  • Current affairs: last twelve months, especially anything connected to police reforms, road safety, cyber crime and Haryana developments.

Reasoning

Series, analogy, classification, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, syllogism and simple non-verbal questions. This section is largely trainable: an hour of daily practice for two months makes a large difference.

Arithmetic

Simplification, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple interest, time and work, time-speed-distance, and basic mensuration, at Class 10 level.

Hindi and English

Hindi grammar, muhavare, paryayvachi and vilom; English grammar basics, vocabulary and comprehension. Language sections are typically the easiest to score in if you revise steadily.

Computer and General Science (if notified)

Basic terms and school-level science.

The Physical Half: How to Train

For many candidates the physical stage is the real filter. A smart plan reduces the risk of injury and builds real endurance.

Know your measurements. Measure your height barefoot against a wall and get your chest measured properly (for men, both unexpanded and expanded). If you are close to the limit, discuss with a trainer or doctor, and remember that height cannot be trained for adult candidates. If you are below the standard for the constable post, consider whether a different post suits you better.

Build a base before speed. If you have not been running, spend the first three to four weeks on easy jogging and walking, four to five days a week, gradually reaching twenty to thirty minutes without stopping. Do not chase timing yet.

Add structure. In weeks five to eight, use one longer steady run, one interval session (for example, repeated 400 m runs with walking breaks) and one easy run each week. Add strength work: push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and skipping.

Peak in weeks nine to twelve. Practise the real distance at test pace once a week, after a proper warm-up. Keep a log of your time, and reduce volume in the last week to arrive fresh.

Look after yourself. Eat enough protein and carbohydrates, sleep well, drink water, and treat pain as a warning. Any medical supplement or shortcut promising fast results should be avoided. The medical stage will check you, and your health matters more than the job.

Female candidates. The event and standards for women differ, but the principle is the same: build endurance gradually, include strength and mobility work, and train at safe places and times.

Salary and Career Growth

Constables are placed in the entry levels of the Haryana government pay matrix, with dearness allowance, house rent allowance where applicable, uniform and other allowances. Check the notification for the pay level. Promotion is through the ranks in the department, subject to service length and departmental tests, and there is also direct recruitment to the Sub-Inspector post for graduates who prefer to compete for a higher entry point.

Previous-Year Trends

  • A very large number of candidates apply for a comparatively small number of constable posts, so both halves matter.
  • The written test is generally moderate; candidates with steady practice in arithmetic and reasoning are able to reach the safe zone.
  • A large share of candidates fail at the physical stage, either because of measurement issues or because they underestimated the run.
  • The scoring of Haryana GK is a differentiator, because many candidates ignore it until the last weeks.
  • Documents sometimes cause disqualification: a mismatched name, an expired category certificate or a missing sports certificate can end an otherwise good application.

Worked Practice Questions

Q1. A car travels at 60 km/h for 2.5 hours. How far does it travel? Answer: 150 km. Explanation: Distance = speed × time = 60 × 2.5 = 150.

Q2. What is 35 percent of 600? Answer: 210. Explanation: 10 percent = 60, so 30 percent = 180 and 5 percent = 30. 180 + 30 = 210.

Q3. Rs 900 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. How much does C get? Answer: Rs 400. Explanation: Total ratio parts = 9, so one part = 100. C gets 4 parts = 400. (A gets 200, B gets 300.)

Q4. A person faces north. He turns 90 degrees to the right and then 180 degrees. Which direction does he face now? Answer: West. Explanation: North turned right by 90 degrees gives east. Turning 180 degrees from east gives west.

Q5. Find the odd one out: Constable, Head Constable, Sub-Inspector, Clerk. Answer: Clerk. Explanation: The first three are ranks in the police force. A clerk is a ministerial post.

Q6. What is the meaning of the idiom "ऊँट के मुँह में जीरा"? Answer: A very small quantity compared to the need. Explanation: A cumin seed in a camel's mouth means the amount is far too little to satisfy the requirement.

Q7. Choose the word closest in meaning to VIGILANT. (a) Careless (b) Alert (c) Slow (d) Tired Answer: (b) Alert. Explanation: Vigilant means watchful and attentive, which is the same as alert.

Q8. Which set of criminal laws replaced the Indian Penal Code, and when did it take effect? Answer: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Explanation: The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita replaced the CrPC and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam replaced the Indian Evidence Act on the same date.

Q9. The First Battle of Panipat (1526) was fought between: (a) Akbar and Hemu (b) Babur and Ibrahim Lodi (c) Abdali and the Marathas (d) Sher Shah and Humayun Answer: (b). Explanation: Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi and established Mughal rule in India. Panipat's three battles (1526, 1556, 1761) are frequent Haryana questions.

Q10. In a row of 21 students, Ravi is 8th from the left. What is his position from the right? Answer: 14th. Explanation: Position from right = total − position from left + 1 = 21 − 8 + 1 = 14.

Q11. Which historic road running through Ambala, Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat is one of India's oldest routes? Answer: The Grand Trunk Road. Explanation: The Grand Trunk Road crosses Haryana from the north near Ambala to the south near Delhi and is associated with Sher Shah Suri's improvements.

Physical Test Day: What to Expect and How to Behave

On the day of the physical stage, reporting time is strict and gates close on schedule. Carry your admit or call letter, original ID proof and the documents listed in the notice. Candidates are usually measured first, and only those who meet the standards move on to the endurance event. Some points from the experience of candidates in earlier cycles:

  • Wear light, comfortable sports shoes that you have already used in training. New shoes cause blisters.
  • Eat a light meal two to three hours before your slot, and drink water, but do not drink a large amount just before running.
  • Warm up properly for ten minutes with jogging, leg swings and stretches, unless the organisers restrict this.
  • Start at a pace you can hold. Most people who fail a timed run start too fast and slow down in the last third.
  • If there is any complaint about measurement or timing, raise it politely with the officer in charge at the time, not later on social media. Written objections are handled through the process described in the notification.

Documents Checklist for Constable Candidates

Keeping documents ready is part of the preparation. Organise them in a single folder and check names, dates and spellings across all of them.

Document Why it matters
Class 10 certificate Date of birth, name, and Hindi or Sanskrit as a subject
Class 12 certificate and marksheet Educational eligibility
Parivar Pehchan Patra details Used for application and verification
Category certificate (SC, BC and others) Needed only if you claim reservation; must be in the state's current format
Residence proof Where the notification requires it
Sports or ex-servicemen certificates For horizontal reservation claims
Passport-size photographs and ID proof For the admit card and verification

If any certificate is missing or has errors, apply for correction at once, since government offices can take weeks.

Written Test Strategy for Physically Focused Candidates

Candidates who spend most of their energy on running often ignore the written test until late. A schedule that works: train in the early morning (about 60 to 75 minutes), study arithmetic in the late morning, when you are fresh, and reasoning and GK in the evening. Keep Sundays for a full mock test and then correct wrong answers. Aim to turn arithmetic into a strength: it is the section where most constable candidates lose the most marks because of weak fundamentals, and where a couple of months of consistent practice produces the largest gain.

Use the first hour of the mock to attempt only the questions you can do in under a minute. Then come back to the harder ones. That approach ensures that you bank marks without being trapped by two or three long questions.

Month-by-Month Preparation Plan (Four Months)

  • Month 1: Physical base building, arithmetic basics and Hindi grammar. Check your documents (family ID, category certificate, matriculation and Class 12 certificates).
  • Month 2: Structured running, strength work; percentage, ratio, profit and loss, time and work; reasoning series and coding; Haryana GK, part one (history, geography).
  • Month 3: Interval running and test-pace practice; speed and distance, mensuration; blood relations and direction sense; Haryana GK, part two (culture, schemes, personalities), and police and law awareness.
  • Month 4: Weekly mock tests, a practice run of the real distance, current-affairs revision, and final documents check. In the last week, reduce training load.

Books and Resources

  • A standard arithmetic book for Class 10 to 12 level and a reasoning book.
  • A Hindi grammar and a basic English grammar book.
  • A short Haryana GK book with updates from government sources.
  • A monthly current-affairs summary.
  • A running log or app to track your time.
  • Timed mocks on pareeksha.in to practise the written stage.

Common Mistakes

  1. Neglecting the written stage because you feel confident about running.
  2. Starting to run only after the notification is published.
  3. Overtraining and getting injured a few weeks before the test.
  4. Ignoring measurement and eyesight standards until the last moment.
  5. Applying with incorrect category or family ID details.
  6. Trusting any fast-track supplement or unverified advice.
  7. Not reading the notification's order of stages.

Final Word

This is a job for people who can prepare in two directions at once: the desk and the track. A slow, steady plan with a safe build-up in running and a daily hour of arithmetic can take an ordinary candidate a long way. Use the mock tests on pareeksha.in for the written half, keep your training sensible and rely on the official notification for the exact standards and dates.
