22 | Annamacharya and the Tirumala song tradition

Annamacharya is associated with devotional *sankirtanas* in praise of Lord Venkateswara. The Annamayya district cultural account records the composer, while Tirumala is the principal devotional location that candidates should place in present Tirupati district. The person, named district and shrine are related, but they are not the same geographical point. A map question asking for the temple should be answered with Tirumala; a person question should be answered with Annamacharya.

The songs' performance life extends beyond the shrine, through singers, manuscripts, recordings and teaching. Avoid the trap of treating a modern recording as the song's origin or the district name as proof of the composer's exact birth date. In exam revision, learn a compact chain: Annamacharya → devotional Telugu songs → Venkateswara/Tirumala. Compare it with Kshetrayya → padams → expressive music and dance. Both are Telugu-linked, but a correct match depends on the lyric's devotional and performance setting.

Worked example: Annamacharya songs are strongly associated with Tirumala's devotional tradition. The location is useful for map recall, while the corpus is literary and musical. Do not answer a question about the poet-composer with the temple's district alone. If a question asks present district, use the current map; if it asks historical context, retain the older place reference.

Active recall: Place Tirumala on the southern AP map. Which composer is paired with Venkateswara sankirtanas?
