40 | Cultural geography: the Krishna corridor

The Krishna corridor joins river, coast, towns and performance history. Place Kuchipudi village and Pedana toward the coastal Krishna district setting, Kondapalli near Vijayawada in present NTR district, and Mangalagiri across the central urban corridor in the Guntur region. Vijayawada's Kanaka Durga temple adds a festival site; Movva/Kshetrayya adds a music-literary association. These points are close enough to be confused in a hurried MCQ but belong to different media: dance, printing, toys, weaving, temple festival and lyric.

Draw the corridor from west to east. The Krishna flows past the Vijayawada area toward the delta and coast. A craft can be linked to a market across the river without changing its production centre. Modern district boundaries are administrative overlays on an older cultural network. Therefore, if a question names an old district in a historical source, locate the actual town before deciding whether a present-district answer is needed. This geographic reasoning is more reliable than a memorised mixed-age table.

Worked example: The Krishna corridor links Kuchipudi, Kondapalli, Pedana, Mangalagiri and Vijayawada on one study map. Build a route from performance village to toy cluster, textile centres and festival city. This is a memory device, not a claim that each art form is confined to the riverbank. Use town-level placement before learning present district labels.

Active recall: On an unlabelled map, place six Krishna-corridor examples and state their art or festival type.
