Anna Canteens are a subsidised-meal service under the municipal-administration setting. The current CDMA portal identifies them as a live initiative. The February 2026 budget speech said 204 canteens were operating and proposed increasing to 275 by March 2026. The latter number was a plan in that speech, not an independently verified completed count. Older programme documents describe low-price meals, but a current menu and tariff should be confirmed from the present operator before advising a user.
A canteen needs a site, kitchen or supply chain, food-safety controls, staff, funding and daily meal records. One canteen is not equivalent to one beneficiary; many people may use it on different days. Nor does the number of sanctioned sites establish the number serving meals. A district count tells little about urban coverage unless the locations and opening hours are known.
The scheme can reduce food insecurity for low-income workers, students and travellers, but quality and accessibility determine impact. Police candidates should know the municipal authority's role, especially if a queue, closure or food-safety complaint creates a local issue. Food safety action belongs to competent civil authorities.
Worked example: An announcement proposes increasing Anna Canteens from an operating count to a target by a later date. Write two columns, 'operating on speech date' and 'planned by deadline'. A canteen can be sanctioned yet closed, or operating but serving different numbers of meals each day. To test actual access, check the site, opening hours, meal register and food-safety record. Do not convert a canteen count into a beneficiary count.
Active recall: Distinguish canteens planned, operating and meals served. Why is a 2018 tariff document insufficient proof of today's price?
Which scheme gives which kind of benefit?
Use the benefit type first, then verify eligibility in the operative order.

Classify the direct benefit before memorising the brand: cash, goods, service, subsidy or infrastructure. A meal and a household transfer can support the same student without being the same programme. The operative order sets eligibility.
