Chapter 11 — October 1–10: Asian Games final results

Coverage window: 1–10 October 2026

Revision checked: 11 October 2026

Question set: CA26-OCT-001 to CA26-OCT-020

October’s first ten days close the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games story. The central exam fact is not only the total: India placed fourth with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, or 85 overall. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) confirmed that the Games closed on 4 October; its 5 October report and the Government of India’s post-event factsheet provide after-event confirmation. That publication sequence matters. The pre-event schedule in September described an upcoming Games; a final medal count belongs to a dated, post-event source.

1. Read the final medal table correctly

India’s medal columns add to the published total: 21 + 27 + 37 = 85. The ranking is fourth. Uzbekistan also won 21 golds, but India’s 27 silvers exceeded Uzbekistan’s 25, and the OCA report identifies India as fourth and Uzbekistan as fifth. Do not rank teams by total medals alone when the official table orders them by gold medals first and then uses the next medal columns to resolve a tie.

A reliable recall card has four fields: rank, gold, silver, bronze, total. Reconstruct the total as a quick arithmetic check, then compare the official ranking. This prevents a frequent error in which a candidate recalls “21 gold” but assigns a wrong overall position or omits the silver and bronze counts.

2. Which sports supplied medals?

The Government of India’s post-event factsheet provides a sport-wise breakdown. Archery led India’s gold count with five. Shooting and boxing won three golds each. Wrestling won two. Athletics and golf each contributed one. India also won two golds each in cricket, hockey and kabaddi. These are sport-by-sport records; do not collapse team events into a generic “team sports” figure if an exam asks for the sport.

The same table shows why medal totals and gold totals are different measures. Athletics contributed 24 medals overall: one gold, nine silver and 14 bronze. Shooting’s total was 15, while archery’s was nine. A candidate should retain the units and columns. “Most golds” points to archery; “most total medals” points to athletics in the official sport-wise table.

3. Three event results to anchor the tally

The OCA’s event reports provide useful examples behind the summary table:

  • India beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the men’s T20 cricket final on 3 October and secured gold.
  • India’s women won the Asian Games hockey final 1–0 against China on 2 October. OCA described the title as India’s first women’s Asian Games hockey gold in 44 years and said the result secured direct qualification for LA28.
  • India retained the men’s hockey title with a 5–1 victory over Malaysia on 3 October.

These are three separate competitions and results. Be precise about the side, opponent, score, event and date. The score in a final is not itself a medal tally; the medal table aggregates results across disciplines.

4. Recognitions after the closing ceremony

In a report dated 5 October, the OCA said archer Kumkum Mohod and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal were named India’s most valuable performers. Mohod received the Jaspal Rana Award and Kalkal received the Raja Randhir Singh Award. The report said Mohod won three medals, including two golds, while Kalkal won gold in men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling. This is an OCA report about the awards; keep the names and award pairings attached to that source rather than generalising beyond it.

The main study distinction is between an individual award, an individual event result and a country’s aggregate medal-table position. They are related, but they answer different questions. If a stem asks for India’s rank, do not answer with an athlete’s award. If it asks who received a named recognition, do not respond with a sport’s medal count.

5. Source hierarchy and cross-check routine

For a final result, use the event organiser’s final table or a national sports authority’s post-event release. A preview, selection announcement or countdown item establishes what was planned, not what happened. Here, the OCA’s 5 October report confirms the Indian rank and total, while the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s 6 October factsheet publishes the sport-wise breakdown. The two sources agree on the 21–27–37–85 total.

Use a three-step check: (1) confirm the event has ended; (2) locate an after-event table; (3) verify that the medal columns sum to the reported total. For a sport-specific claim, open the relevant event report. This method works for Asian Games questions and for other multi-day tournaments where the running tally changes until the closing date.
