NEW DELHI, August 10 — The Rajya Sabha passed the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026, on Monday, introducing updates to legal framework governing bank record evidence in courts.
The new bill seeks to replace the British-era Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891. It provides official recognition to printouts of data stored in cloud services, digital logs, and transaction hashes as valid primary evidence in judicial proceedings, reducing the requirement for bank managers to physically present paper logs in courtrooms.
The Ministry of Finance stated that the update aligns banking evidence rules with modern IT infrastructure and digital payments growth.
Banking laws and evidence regulations are tested in financial and polity sections. Candidates should know that the new bill updates legal definitions of "bankers' books" to include digital records, databases, and microfilms.
