NEW DELHI, August 8 — Parliament passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new guidelines to digitalise the registration process and establish a centralized national database.

The bill proposes the compulsory use of digital birth and death certificates, which will act as primary proof of age for various public services, including school admissions, voter list registrations, passport issuances, and government appointments. It also simplifies database sharing between state registries and central databases like the National Population Register (NPR).

The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the reforms will reduce administrative delays and improve the accuracy of public welfare lists.

Legislative bills and amendments are core parts of the Indian Polity syllabus. Candidates should note that the new bill amends the British-era Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
