NEW DELHI, October 4 — Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in consultation with the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, has formally reconstituted all 24 Departmentally Related Standing Committees (DRSCs) of the Parliament of India for the tenure spanning 2026–27.
According to the notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the reconstituted panels cover vital portfolios including Defence, External Affairs, Finance, Home Affairs, and Commerce. Each Departmentally Related Standing Committee comprises 31 members—21 nominated from the Lok Sabha by the Speaker and 10 nominated from the Rajya Sabha by the Chairman—drawn proportionately across party representation to review legislative bills, examine statutory demand for grants, and scrutinize annual ministry reports.
Parliamentary committees function as miniature legislatures, providing a non-partisan platform for threadbare institutional deliberation, stakeholder hearings, and rigorous fiscal oversight over executive functioning. Committee members serve a one-year tenure.
Parliamentary committee types, constitutional backing, and operational mandates constitute high-yield topics in the Polity and Governance papers of civil services examinations. Candidates should remember that the Departmentally Related Standing Committee system was formally introduced in 1993 with 17 committees, and was subsequently expanded to 24 committees in 2004.
