NITI Aayog proposes interstate license portability for doctors

NEW DELHI, August 17 — Government think-tank NITI Aayog proposed the implementation of interstate license portability for doctors and other healthcare professionals to address regional shortages and improve emergency medical response.

Under the proposed policy, registered medical practitioners will be permitted to practice in any state without requiring separate registrations with individual state medical councils. The initiative aims to create a unified national registry, simplify administrative transfers, and enable doctors to offer telemedicine services across state boundaries without legal hurdles.

NITI Aayog officials stated that the proposal is being reviewed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and state health departments to address local deployment rules.

National health policies and federal administrative reforms are important topics in polity and governance. Candidates should note that public health is listed in the State List under the Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution, requiring cooperation between the Centre and states for national registries.
