NEW DELHI, October 2 — The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), functioning under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), on Friday announced that its flagship retail emporium at Connaught Place in New Delhi registered an all-time record single-day turnover of ₹2.15 crore on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
According to sales metrics compiled by the Commission, the milestone reflects a nationwide retail surge across over 8,000 operational Khadi Bhavans, bolstered by the launch of a 20 percent national festive discount on indigenous textiles and handcrafted village consumables. High demand was recorded for heritage hand-spun Khadi muslin, certified Pashmina shawls, and pure silk saris, alongside rural bio-products encompassing raw organic honey, herbal soaps, and handmade terracotta tableware.
KVIC leadership emphasized that the strategic brand campaign—championed by the Prime Minister as 'Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion, and Khadi for Transformation'—has successfully repositioned hand-spun apparel among younger urban demographics as a sustainable, carbon-neutral lifestyle statement. The cumulative turnover of the Khadi and village industries sector crossed ₹1.55 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, directly sustaining dignified livelihoods for over 50 lakh rural spinners and artisans.
The statutory architecture of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (constituted under the KVIC Act 1956, headquartered in Mumbai), the operational mechanisms of the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP administered nationally by KVIC), the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI), and the economic philosophy of Gandhian Swadeshi are essential topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-I: Modern Indian History & GS-III: Rural Industrialization) and State PSC exams.
