NEW DELHI, October 14 — The National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), on Wednesday released the provisional findings of the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), reporting that Gross Value Added (GVA) across India's formal registered manufacturing sector expanded by 7.4 percent in real terms.
According to the comprehensive enterprise survey, gross factory output climbed past ₹21.5 lakh crore at current prices, driven by resilient capacity utilization across automotive assemblies, basic metals, chemical synthesis, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The total count of operational registered manufacturing establishments expanded by 5.1 percent, pushing formal factory-floor employment to a record 1.85 crore workers, reflecting a 5.9 percent annual net accretion in manufacturing jobs.
State-wise distribution revealed that Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh consolidated their manufacturing leadership, collectively accounting for over 53 percent of aggregate national industrial GVA. The survey also recorded a 6.8 percent real increase in worker emoluments and factory welfare benefits.
The statistical methodologies of the Annual Survey of Industries (conducted under the Collection of Statistics Act 2008), the structural differences between volume-based Index of Industrial Production (IIP, base year 2011-12) and value-based ASI data, Gross Value Added (GVA) accounting at basic prices, and industrial policy reforms under the Make in India initiative are central syllabus areas across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Industrial Growth & Economy) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exams.
