NEW DELHI, October 21 — The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released the Annual Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report on Tuesday showing the national Unemployment Rate (UR) in Usual Status for persons aged 15 years and above at 3.2%.
The comprehensive household employment survey highlighted a structural surge in the Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR), which climbed to 41.7% compared to 23.3% recorded in 2017–18. Concurrently, the aggregate all-India Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) rose to 60.1% while the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) expanded to 58.2%, reflecting sustained job absorption across construction, modern services, and rural agro-enterprises.
Economic policymakers attributed the surging female workforce entry to targeted credit expansion under PM Mudra Yojana, rural micro-enterprise scaling under the Lakhpati Didi mission (DAY-NRLM), and expanded household infrastructure (piped water under Jal Jeevan Mission and clean cooking fuel) freeing women's time for productive economic activity.
Statistical definitions in labour economics—Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), Unemployment Rate (UR), and the methodological distinction between Usual Status (365-day reference frame) and Current Weekly Status (CWS 7-day reference frame)—are perennial high-yield questions in UPSC Prelims and GS-III.
