NEW DELHI, October 19 — The National Statistical Office (NSO), operating under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released official Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data on Monday showing India's industrial output expanding by a robust 5.8% year-on-year.
Sectoral performance metrics indicated broad-based industrial acceleration, with the mining index expanding by 7.2%, electricity generation climbing 6.4%, and manufacturing growing by 5.5%. Under the use-based categorization, capital goods recorded 8.4% expansion while infrastructure and construction goods surged 7.6%, reflecting sustained fixed-capital formation across commercial transport, high-speed rail, and expressway construction corridors.
Economic analysts observed that the momentum aligns with sustained double-digit expansion across the Eight Core Industries—which collectively account for 40.27% of the total IIP basket—reinforcing sovereign GDP expansion projections above 7% for the current fiscal cycle.
The statistical methodology of the Index of Industrial Production (base year 2011–12 released monthly by NSO), the composition and weighting of the Eight Core Industries (Refinery Products carrying the highest weight and Fertilizers the lowest), and supply-side economic indicators are foundational themes across UPSC GS-III and RBI Grade B.
