BENGALURU, October 19 — The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) presented the operational framework for its 'Debris Free Space Missions (DFSM) by 2030' initiative on Monday at the annual plenary of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC).
Under the newly mandated aerospace sustainability protocols, all future Indian satellites and upper stages of launch vehicles (PSLV, LVM3, and SSLV) are engineered with mandatory de-orbiting capability and post-mission passivation mechanisms. Spacecraft occupying Low Earth Orbits (LEO) must execute controlled re-entry burns within five years of operational decommission, venting residual propellants and depressurizing battery cells to prevent on-orbit fragmentation and avert catastrophic Kessler Syndrome cascades.
ISRO highlighted the expanded tracking precision of Project NETRA (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis) based at Bengaluru, which deploys ground-based optical tracking sensors and radar to monitor space debris objects down to 10 centimetres, executing autonomous Collision Avoidance Maneuvers (CAM) to shield vital national assets.
The scientific mechanics of the Kessler Syndrome, institutional roles under the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC founded in 1993), provisions of the UN Outer Space Treaty of 1967, and the operational architecture of ISRO's Project NETRA are critical study areas for UPSC GS-III Science and Technology.
