NEW DELHI, October 8 — Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a premier public sector enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), on Thursday formalized a landmark manufacturing consortium agreement with Maharatna engineering conglomerate Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to deliver standardized turbine-island packages and steam generators for ten indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) sanctioned under 'Fleet Mode'.
Under the consolidated industrial roadmap, standardized equipment fabrication across Kaiga (Units 5 & 6 in Karnataka), Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (Units 3 & 4), Chutka (Units 1 & 2 in Madhya Pradesh), and Mahi Banswara (Units 1 to 4 in Rajasthan) transitions sovereign nuclear construction from fragmented piecemeal contracts to high-throughput series production. Standardizing primary coolant pumps, reactor pressure vessels, and heavy water heat exchangers is projected to compress multi-unit project gestations from an average of nine years to under six years.
Ministerial leadership affirmed that fleet-mode operationalization guarantees the steady expansion of India's civilian nuclear generation capacity from current baselines of 8,180 MWe to 22,480 MWe by fiscal year 2031-32. The indigenous 700 MWe PHWR design incorporates advanced passive decay-heat removal systems and steel-lined double containment domes engineered to withstand severe design-extension earthquakes and external impacts.
Nuclear energy expansion matrices, the physics of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), natural uranium fuel cycles, and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act 2010 are core topics within UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Energy Infrastructure and Science) and technical examinations. Aspirants should note that Kakrapar Unit-3 in Gujarat stands as India's first commercially synchronized indigenous 700 MWe PHWR (achieving commercial operation in June 2023), utilizing heavy water (deuterium oxide, D2O) as both neutron moderator and core primary coolant.
