NEW DELHI, October 19 — The Department of Military Affairs (DMA), under the Ministry of Defence, officially notified the 6th Positive Indigenisation List on Monday, barring the overseas procurement of 346 complex military sub-systems, sensors, and aerospace components.
Encompassing strategically vital items such as airborne digital electro-optical suites, naval transmission gearboxes, missile telemetry actuators, armored fighting vehicle laser rangefinders, and specialized radar alloys, the list imposes phased import embargoes spanning December 2026 to December 2030. Following the stipulated deadlines, the Tri-Services are legally restricted to procuring these items exclusively from licensed Indian defense manufacturers and private MSMEs.
The Ministry highlighted that cumulative orders placed under earlier indigenisation tranches have exceeded ₹5 Lakh Crore with domestic manufacturers, catalyzing technological innovation and expanding sovereign annual defence exports past the historic ₹21,000 Crore milestone across friendly foreign nations.
The administrative structure of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA created in 2019 headed by the Chief of Defence Staff), the operational mechanics of the SRIJAN indigenisation portal, capital procurement avenues under DAP 2020 (Buy Indian-IDDM), and FDI reforms in defense are high-priority topics for UPSC GS-III (Security).
