NEW DELHI, October 20 — The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare alongside the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) notified the Medical Devices (Amendment) Rules 2026 on Monday, mandating Unique Device Identification (UDI) barcoding for all implantable medical devices.
Under the notified statutory guidelines, domestic manufacturers and importers of critical medical hardware—including cardiac stents, orthopedic knee implants, prosthetic heart valves, and implantable pacemakers—must imprint GS1-standardized machine-readable 2D barcodes carrying designated Device Identifiers (UDI-DI) and Production Identifiers (UDI-PI). The digital markers feed into a centralized CDSCO database recording manufacturing batches, sterilization expiry, and clinical compliance records.
Health officials underscored that mandatory UDI tagging eliminates substandard and counterfeit surgical implants, protects patient safety, and enables instantaneous nationwide recall alerts across hospitals if adverse device events or material defects are detected.
The statutory governance of medical devices under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and Medical Devices Rules 2017, the regulatory mandate of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI/CDSCO), and targets under the National Medical Devices Policy 2023 represent vital themes for UPSC GS-II and health policy exams.
