Fast addition, balancing and series sums

Add by rounding and correcting, add left to right, and use the closed-form sums of 1 to n, odds, evens, squares and cubes.

1 + 2 + … + n = n(n + 1)/2. First n odd numbers = n². First n even numbers = n(n + 1). Squares 1² + … + n² = n(n + 1)(2n + 1)/6. Cubes 1³ + … + n³ = (n(n + 1)/2)². Arithmetic series: sum = n × (first + last)/2.

Rounding adds a known error that you subtract later. The series formulas come from pairing first and last terms (Gauss) and from telescoping identities.

When you round up, you must subtract what you added, and when you round down you must add it back. Write the correction on the side.

For sums of more than five numbers, group in pairs that make round numbers instead.
