Short answer: For non-uniformed posts filled through APPSC and other recruiting agencies, the government raised the upper age limit from 34 to 44 years (G.O.Ms.No.187, dated 14-09-2026), valid for notifications issued up to 30-09-2027. For uniformed posts such as the police, G.O.Ms.No.188 of the same date extends a two-year enhancement over the limit written in each post's special rules, also up to 30-09-2027. Category relaxations come on top of these figures, and every notification states its own reckoning date.
Information as on 7 October 2026. Sources: General Administration (Ser.A) Department orders G.O.Ms.No.187 and 188, the SLPRB notifications of 16-09-2026 and 17-09-2026 on slprb.ap.gov.in, and the Mega DSC 2025 notification of the School Education Department. Read the age paragraph of each new notification before you apply.
The first question almost every candidate asks when a recruitment notice appears is simple: "Am I eligible by age?" The honest answer depends on more than the number of years. The month and day of birth, the date on which age is counted, the category you belong to, the exact wording of the notification and the government order it quotes all take part in the decision. A mistake here is expensive, because an application rejected for age usually comes after months of preparation.
This guide walks through the orders that changed the limits in September 2026, the way relaxation works for each category, what the police boards have now published, how teacher recruitment treated age in the last full notification, and how to do the arithmetic yourself. It ends with common confusions, a checklist, ten practice questions and a short FAQ. Wherever a number could not be confirmed from an official page, the text says so and points you to the notification.
The two government orders in one view
On 14-09-2026 the General Administration (Services-A) Department issued two orders about direct recruitment. Direct recruitment means filling a post through an open selection process, not by promotion. The orders replaced the arrangement that was due to lapse on 30-09-2026.
| Item | G.O.Ms.No.187 | G.O.Ms.No.188 |
|---|---|---|
| Date | 14-09-2026 | 14-09-2026 |
| Department | General Administration (Ser.A) | General Administration (Ser.A) |
| Posts covered | All non-uniformed services | Uniformed services |
| What changed | Upper age limit 34 raised to 44 (earlier 42) | Upper limit in special rules enhanced by 2 years |
| Recruiters covered | APPSC and other recruiting agencies | APPSC and other recruiting agencies |
| Valid up to | 30-09-2027 | 30-09-2027 |
| Category concessions | Continue over and above, as in Rule 12 | Continue over and above, as in Rule 12 |
Two phrases in the orders deserve attention. The first is "for the posts to be notified". The enhancement is tied to notifications issued within the window, not to the date of the examination. A written test held after 30-09-2027 for a notification issued before that date is not affected by the window closing, although you should still check how your notification phrases the matter. The second is "over and above". It tells you that the 44 years (or the enhanced police limit) is a new base, and the category concessions of Rule 12 of the Andhra Pradesh State and Subordinate Service Rules, 1996 are added to it or subtracted from your age as the rule directs.
The order for non-uniformed services amends an ad hoc rule first issued in 2016. That rule raised the limit from 34 to 42, and it has been extended again and again. Its text excludes the uniformed services of Police, Excise, Fire, Prisons, Forest and Transport, because those posts carry physical standards. They are handled through the separate order, G.O.Ms.No.188.
How the limit has moved since 2016
The enhancement is a temporary measure that the government renews. Knowing the history helps you read old study material correctly, because many videos and blogs still quote 42.
| Stage | Non-uniformed posts (limit raised from 34) | Uniformed posts (enhancement of 2 years) |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest order listed | G.O.Ms.No.396, dated 05-11-2016, 34 to 42 | G.O.Ms.No.53, dated 17-06-2020 |
| Renewals listed | 105 (27-09-2021), 101 (30-09-2022), 109 (10-10-2023), 36 (04-03-2025), 109 (08-10-2025) | 120 (28-09-2022), 110 (10-10-2023), 37 (04-03-2025), 110 (08-10-2025) |
| Latest order | 187 (14-09-2026): 44 years, up to 30-09-2027 | 188 (14-09-2026): 2 years, up to 30-09-2027 |
The renewals are the orders listed in the "read the following" paragraph of each new G.O. They show a pattern of repeated extension, but a pattern is not a promise. The current window ends on 30-09-2027, and nobody can say today what happens after that. Plan for the notifications that can realistically appear before the date, and treat any later extension as a bonus rather than a basis for planning.
Another practical point: the order itself mentions that the proposal came after representations about limited recruitment opportunities in recent years. That background explains the motive but adds nothing to your eligibility. Only the operative paragraph and the gazette amendment matter, namely the substitution of "34 to 44 years" for "34 to 42 years" and of "30.09.2027" for "30.09.2026".
APPSC posts: the base rule and the 44-year limit
For posts recruited by the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission, the starting point is Rule 12 of the State and Subordinate Service Rules, 1996. The general framework is a minimum age of 18 and a maximum fixed by the post's special rules, with 34 as the default maximum. The ad hoc rule lifts that default to 44 for non-uniformed posts notified until 30-09-2027.
Three cautions apply.
- Special rules can differ. Some posts have their own limit in their special rules. When a notification quotes a different figure, the notification governs. The G.O. does not override a more specific statement in a particular notification.
- Educational qualification is judged separately. Rule 12 expects the qualification to be held on a stated date, usually the notification date. Age and qualification can therefore be tested on different dates.
- News reports about a notification are not the notification. In mid-September 2026 several news pages reported a Group-I notification. Those pages are secondary sources. When you are checking your own eligibility, use the PDF on psc.ap.gov.in. This guide does not quote post-wise APPSC age figures for that reason. For the difference between the four group exams, see APPSC Group 1, 2, 3 and 4 differences, and for the latest Group-I details see the Group-I notification explainer.
Category relaxation under Rule 12
Rule 12 lists the classes of candidates who get a concession. The two G.O.s say these concessions continue "over and above" the new limit. The table below follows Rule 12 as it appears in the published text of G.O.Ms.No.565 (28-09-2011); later amendments can change details, so the notification in front of you is final.
| Category | Concession | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| SC, ST, BC | 5 years on the maximum age | Rule 12(1)(b)(i) |
| Persons with physical disability | 10 years | Rule 12(1)(b)(ii) |
| Ex-servicemen | Army service plus 3 years deducted from age | Rule 12(1)(c)(i) |
| NCC Instructors | Service plus 3 years, minimum 6 months service | Rule 12(1)(c)(ii) |
| Regular State Government employees | Regular service, limited to 5 years, deducted from age | Rule 12(1)(c)(iii) |
There are two kinds of concession, and mixing them up leads to wrong sums.
- Added concessions raise the ceiling. If the limit is 44, a BC candidate's ceiling becomes 49 and a candidate with a qualifying disability has 54.
- Deducted concessions lower your counted age. An ex-serviceman subtracts service plus three years from his actual age, then compares the result with the post's ceiling. The rule adds that the age after deduction must still not exceed the maximum prescribed for the post.
The SLPRB notifications of September 2026 show how these headings look in current practice, and they also settle a question the older material left open. They grant EWS candidates the same five-year relaxation as BC (non-creamy layer), SC and ST candidates. The notification says EWS, BC (NCL), SC and ST candidates each receive up to five years. For APPSC notifications, the EWS line must still be read in the particular notification, because this guide could not open an APPSC age paragraph for 2026. Do not copy the police rule to another recruiter without reading it.
One more concession in Rule 12 concerns women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated and not remarried. Their treatment differs by recruiter and by post level, so read it in the notification and never infer it from a table like the one above.
Police recruitment: what SLPRB has actually published
The State Level Police Recruitment Board issued its recruitment notifications on 16-09-2026 and 17-09-2026. A press note of 16-09-2026 lists the posts: Stipendiary Cadet Trainee Sub-Inspectors (Civil), Reserve Sub-Inspectors (AR), SI (SPF), SI (Communications), SI (Police Transport Organisation), Scientific Assistants (FSL), Police Constables (Civil), Police Constables (AR), Police Constables (Communications), Police Constables (Mechanics and Drivers), Firemen and Warders. A press note of 17-09-2026 announces 147 Driver Operator posts in the State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department. Application dates were to be announced separately on slprb.ap.gov.in, so confirm the live dates there.
Having opened the notification PDFs on the SLPRB site, I can give the age rules exactly as published. The reckoning date in every case is 1 July 2026.
| Post group | Age rule in the notification | Born between |
|---|---|---|
| SCT Sub-Inspector (Civil, AR) and SI (SPF) | 21 or above, below 27 | 2 July 1999 and 1 July 2005 |
| SI (Communications, PTO) | 21 or above, below 27 | 2 July 1999 and 1 July 2005 |
| Police Constable (Civil, AR) | 18 or above, below 24 | 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2008 |
| Police Constable (Communications) | 18 or above, below 24 | 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2008 |
| Police Constable (Mechanic) | 18 or above, below 24 | 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2008 |
| Police Constable (Driver) | 18 or above, below 27 | 2 July 1999 and 1 July 2008 |
| Fireman, Warder (men and women) | 18 or above, below 32 | 2 July 1994 and 1 July 2008 |
| Home Guards with 360 days of service in two years | 18 or above, below 32 | 2 July 1994 and 1 July 2008 |
| Driver Operator (Fire Services), other candidates | 18 or above, below 30 | 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2008 |
| Scientific Assistant (FSL) | below 44 | on or after 2 July 1982 |
Notes on reading this table:
- The phrase in the notification is "must not have attained the age", so the upper limit is exclusive. A person who turns 24 on 1 July 2026 has attained 24 and is outside the range for a constable post. The notification states the birth window, and that window is the safest test.
- Relaxation in the same notifications: up to five years for EWS, up to five years for BC (non-creamy layer), SC and ST, regular service up to five years for employees of the State Government, army, navy or air force service plus three years, NCC whole-time Cadet Corps Instructor service plus three years with at least six months of service, and up to three years for retrenched temporary employees of the State Census Department who served at least six months during 1991.
- Employees of APTRANSCO, DISCOMs, APGENCO, corporations, municipalities and local bodies do not get the government-employee relaxation.
- For constable posts a widow, divorced woman or judicially separated woman who has not remarried may apply up to 42 years if SC or ST, and up to 37 years if from any other category. She must upload a death certificate or court decree and an affidavit of non-remarriage.
- The notification says the limits "shall not be relaxed under any circumstances" except as listed, and that the online form does not validate age because of the many concessions. Checking eligibility is the candidate's responsibility.
- The date of birth accepted by the Board is the one in the SSC or an equivalent certificate. Horoscopes, affidavits, municipal birth extracts and service records are not accepted for this purpose.
The notifications do not say whether the two years under G.O.Ms.No.188 are already included in the printed limits. Do not try to subtract or add the two years yourself. Use the printed limits only. For the post-level comparison of constable and SI duties, see AP Police Constable vs SI and the AP Police recruitment update.
A separate point about Rule 12: its general minimum age of 18 and maximum of 34 do not apply to police posts. Police age limits come from their special rules, which is why SI has a minimum of 21 and a maximum of 27 above, and why the Scientific Assistant post, which is not a uniformed post, carries 44. That matches the logic of the two orders, since the non-uniformed 44-year limit applies to the scientific post.
Teacher posts: what the last full DSC notification said
Teacher recruitment is handled by the School Education Department, which issues its own age rules. The latest complete teacher-recruitment notification I could open is the Mega DSC 2025 notification, number 01/Mega DSC-TRC-1/2025, dated 20-04-2025, published on the official tet2dsc portal. Its age paragraph rests on a G.O. of the School Education (Services-I) Department dated 17-04-2025.
| Item | Mega DSC 2025 |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 18 years |
| Maximum age, general | 44 years |
| SC, ST, BC, EWS | 49 years |
| Persons with benchmark disabilities | 54 years |
| Age reckoned as on | 01-07-2024 |
| Ex-servicemen | Army service plus 3 years deducted from age |
The ex-servicemen concession in that notification is not automatic. It applies to those released from the Armed Forces other than by dismissal or discharge on grounds of misconduct or inefficiency. The notification also uses the words "more than 44 years of age", which reads as a maximum of 44 years as on the reckoning date. Compare that wording with the police phrase "must not have attained" above. The two forms give different edge cases, which is why you should always do the sum with the exact words in front of you.
Two further points from this notification are worth remembering. The reckoning date was 01-07-2024 even though the notice was issued in April 2025, so the date was not the date of the notification and not the first July of its year. And the documents had to be uploaded at the application stage, which means preparing the benchmark disability certificate or ex-servicemen papers before the window opens.
For the next DSC cycle, wait for the new notification. Some websites quote 18 to 44 and 49 for reserved categories for the new cycle, but the number of years, the reckoning date and the concession list belong to the new document. Use the AP DSC 2026 notification explainer for the latest status and the AP TET guide for the eligibility test. Whether the TET itself carries an age condition is not something this guide could confirm, so read the eligibility clause of the TET notification.
Which date is used for counting age
There are three dates that candidates confuse.
| Date | What it decides | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| Age reckoning date | Whether your age is within the limit | The notification (examples: 1 July 2026 for SLPRB, 01-07-2024 for Mega DSC 2025) |
| Qualification date | Whether you hold the required degree or certificate | The notification, often the notification date |
| Last date to apply | The deadline for submitting the form | The notification or a later press note |
Rule 12 states a default: the maximum age is judged as on 1 July of the year of the notification, and the notification may fix a different date. The two examples above show that the default and the notification can differ. SLPRB used 1 July 2026 for a notification issued in September 2026, which matches the default. The teacher notification used 01-07-2024, which does not match it.
Two consequences follow. First, a delay in the examination does not age you out, because the counting date is fixed. Second, a new notification in a later year may carry a later reckoning date, so your age on that date will be higher. If you are close to a limit, waiting for a later cycle makes your position worse, not better.
How to calculate eligibility step by step
Use the same four steps every time.
- Find the age reckoning date in the notification.
- Compute your age on that date in years, months and days.
- Apply your concession. Add it to the ceiling for SC, ST, BC, EWS and disability. Deduct it from your age for service-based categories.
- Compare the result with the limit, reading the exact wording ("must not have attained" or "more than").
Worked examples with the SLPRB limits (reckoning date 1 July 2026)
| Case | Date of birth | Post and category | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15-03-2003 | Constable (Civil), general | 23 years 3 months; born after 2 July 2002 | Within the limit |
| 2 | 01-07-2002 | Constable (Civil), general | Turned 24 on the reckoning date | Outside, as 24 has been attained |
| 3 | 02-07-2002 | Constable (Civil), general | 23 years 11 months 29 days | Within the limit |
| 4 | 10-02-1998 | Constable (Civil), BC (NCL) | Ceiling 24 + 5 = 29; age 28 years 4 months | Within the limit, with a valid NCL certificate |
| 5 | 05-05-1999 | SI (Civil), general | Ceiling below 27; age 27 years 1 month | Outside |
| 6 | 05-05-1999 | SI (Civil), SC | Ceiling 27 + 5 = 32; age 27 years 1 month | Within the limit |
Worked example: ex-serviceman
An ex-serviceman is 31 years old on 1 July 2026 and served 6 years in the Army. The deduction is 6 + 3 = 9 years. Counted age is 31 − 9 = 22, which is below the constable ceiling of 24. He is within the limit, subject to the release conditions in the notification.
Worked example: State Government employee
A regular State Government employee is 27 on the reckoning date and has 7 years of regular service. The deduction is capped at 5 years, so the counted age is 27 − 5 = 22. Seven years of service does not give seven years of relaxation, because of the cap.
Worked example: non-uniformed post under the 44-year order
A BC candidate was born on 10-03-1980 and is 46 years 3 months old on 1 July 2026. For a non-uniformed post with a 44-year base, the BC ceiling is 49 under the order's relaxation framework, so the candidate is within the limit, provided the particular notification applies the 44-year base and the BC relaxation. A general candidate with the same date of birth is outside the limit, since 46 exceeds 44. Always replace the illustrative base with the notification's own figure.
Worked example: teacher post
For the Mega DSC 2025 notification, a BC candidate born on 01-02-1975 is 49 years 5 months old on 01-07-2024. The BC ceiling was 49, so the candidate fell five months beyond the limit and was outside it. The same person in a notification reckoned at an earlier date could have been within the limit, which shows how much the date matters.
Documents that prove age and category
Age relaxation is granted on proof. Without the proof the relaxation lapses and the application may stall.
| Claim | Typical document | Source of requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | SSC or equivalent certificate | SLPRB notification; other recruiters usually follow the same practice |
| SC, ST or BC status | Community certificate from the competent authority | SLPRB notification |
| BC non-creamy layer | Non-creamy layer certificate in the prescribed period | SLPRB notification |
| EWS | EWS certificate issued on or after 01.04.2026 by the Tahsildar | SLPRB notification of September 2026 |
| Benchmark disability | Disability certificate (SADAREM in the DSC notification) | Mega DSC 2025 notification |
| Ex-servicemen | Release or discharge documents and pension papers as listed | Mega DSC 2025 notification |
| Widow, divorced or separated woman | Death certificate or court decree and an affidavit of non-remarriage | SLPRB notification |
Keep these habits:
- Make sure the date of birth is identical on the SSC certificate, the Aadhaar record and the application form. If a correction is needed, get it done by the proper authority before applying. Altering a document is an offence and ends a career before it begins.
- Keep scans legible, with the issuing authority's name, seal and date visible.
- Check the validity rule for each certificate in the notification, because the EWS and NCL certificates have their own date conditions.
- Ex-servicemen should read their discharge record. The concession can depend on the terms of release.
Common confusions, answered
"Is 44 the limit for everyone?" No. It is the base limit for non-uniformed posts under the order, not for uniformed posts, and category concessions apply on top.
"Do concessions stack?" The orders say Rule 12 concessions continue over and above the limit. If you belong to two categories, for example BC and ex-servicemen, the notification must tell you how the rule applies. Rule 12 also says that after a deduction your counted age must not exceed the post's maximum.
"Does the police also get 44?" No. Uniformed posts depend on the special rules and the two-year enhancement. The published SLPRB limits for September 2026 are in the table above.
"Is age counted on the exam date?" No. It is counted on the date fixed in the notification.
"If the order is dated before my notification, does it apply?" Look at how the notification refers to the order. The orders cover notifications issued up to 30-09-2027, but your notification's own paragraph is decisive.
"A video says something different." Videos and social posts often quote an older limit, such as 42. Ask for the G.O. number and date, and check goir.ap.gov.in or the notification.
"Can I be a few months over and still apply?" Only if a genuine concession applies to you. Do not try to alter documents. Check the concession list, check whether another post suits you and read the exact wording of the limit.
If you are close to the age limit
Being near a limit calls for a plan, not panic. The following approach keeps your effort focused.
- Count your remaining chances. List the notifications that can reasonably appear before 30-09-2027 for which you are eligible. The AP govt jobs calendar for 2026 gives an idea of what to expect, though dates remain estimates until the notice appears.
- Choose two or three exams, not ten. Many state exams share general studies content, such as history, polity, geography and economy. A preparation base that serves several notifications is better than scattered effort.
- Collect documents early. Community, NCL, EWS and disability certificates take time. Having them ready lets you apply on the first day.
- Take a timed paper every week. Time management and error analysis improve quickly with regular practice.
- Do not wait for another extension. The government has extended the limit before, but nothing guarantees it will do so again.
If you are uncertain about eligibility, ask the recruiting body through the contact details printed in the notification. The SLPRB notification itself states that the candidate must satisfy himself or herself about age eligibility, so a written query before you pay the fee is better than a rejection after.
How to read a government order
Government orders use a formal style, but three phrases carry most of the meaning.
- "Direct recruitment" means selection by an open process, not promotion.
- "To be notified" ties the order to notifications issued within the window.
- "Over and above" means that the concession is added on top of the stated limit.
An order has a number, a date, a department and a list of earlier orders in the "read the following" paragraph. If a friend says the limit has changed, ask for those four items. An order that cannot be traced on goir.ap.gov.in, the government orders portal, deserves caution. Both orders discussed here say they are available there.

Frequently asked questions
What is the age limit for AP government jobs? For non-uniformed posts recruited by APPSC and other agencies, the limit is 44 years under G.O.Ms.No.187 for notifications up to 30-09-2027. The minimum is generally 18. Concessions apply on top, and the notification governs.
What is the age limit for the AP Police Constable post in 2026? For the notification issued on 16-09-2026, civil and AR constables must be 18 or above and below 24 on 1 July 2026, with up to five years of relaxation for EWS, BC (NCL), SC and ST candidates, as published by SLPRB.
What is the age limit for AP SI? Sub-Inspector posts in the same notification require candidates to be 21 or above and below 27 as on 1 July 2026, with the same category relaxation.
Does the government order apply to teacher recruitment? Teacher recruitment follows School Education Department orders. The last complete notification I could open, Mega DSC 2025, used 44 years, 49 for reserved categories and 54 for benchmark disability, as on 01-07-2024. The next notification will decide its own figures.
How much relaxation do BC, SC and ST candidates get? Rule 12 gives five years on the maximum age, and the SLPRB notifications of September 2026 also give five years to EWS candidates. For other recruiters, read the notification.
How is ex-servicemen relaxation calculated? Army, navy or air force service plus three years is deducted from actual age, and the result must not exceed the post's maximum. The Mega DSC 2025 notification limits the concession to those released other than for misconduct or inefficiency.
On which date is age calculated? On the date stated in the notification. SLPRB used 1 July 2026, while Mega DSC 2025 used 01-07-2024. The default in Rule 12 is 1 July of the year of the notification, but a notification can set another date.
What if I am over the limit by a few months? Check whether a concession applies to you, check other posts with different limits and wait for the next notification only if you will still be eligible. Never alter a certificate or a date of birth.

Not verified: the text of the APPSC age paragraph for 2026 notifications and APPSC's EWS relaxation; whether the two years of G.O.Ms.No.188 are already inside the printed SLPRB limits; any age condition for the AP TET; and the age rules of the next DSC notification. The text of Rule 12 above follows the version published with G.O.Ms.No.565 of 2011, which I did not re-open, so check the current rule or notification before relying on it.
