Many teaching aspirants in Andhra Pradesh prepare for one DSC and assume it covers every government school. It does not. A large share of the state's residential and special schools is run by societies, not by the district school education offices, and the societies recruit through a related but different process. Add the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV), which hire on yearly contracts through Samagra Shiksha, and the picture becomes confusing: the same word "PGT" can mean a state-selected teacher in one place and a one-year contract teacher in another.
This guide separates those routes. It explains which institutions are involved, which posts the official notifications actually list, how the selection and weightage work, how these posts differ from regular School Assistant and SGT posts, and how to prepare. It uses the official Mega DSC 2025 notification for the society schools and the official Samagra Shiksha KGBV notification of May 2026. Where a point could not be confirmed, the text says so.
Position as on 7 October 2026. No fresh recruitment notification for society-school teacher posts (Model Schools, APREIS, the BC, Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare residential societies) was visible in the resource list of the AP TET and DSC portal (tet2dsc.apcfss.in). The latest notification for these posts is Notification 02/MEGA DSC-TRC-1/2025, dated 20 April 2025, whose application window closed on 15 May 2025. Press reports expect a DSC notification around 15 October 2026, but that is a report and not an official announcement; see the AP DSC 2026 notification status. Separately, Samagra Shiksha issued KGBV Recruitment Notification No.01/KGBV/APSS/2026 on 25 May 2026 for 299 contract teaching posts; its application window was scheduled to close on 5 June 2026 and district merit lists were already moving in July and August 2026. So there is no open application for either route as on this date, as far as the official pages show.

Which institutions are we talking about?
Four societies and the Model Schools appear in the 2025 notification, and KGBVs sit in a separate scheme. It helps to hold them apart.
| Institution | Administrative department | What the 2025 notification lists |
|---|---|---|
| AP Model Schools | School Education Department | TGT, PGT and Principal |
| APREIS (AP Residential Educational Institutions Society) | School Education Department | TGT, PGT, PET and Principal |
| MJPAPBCWREIS (the BC Welfare residential society) | BC Welfare | TGT, PGT and Principal |
| APSWREIS (Social Welfare residential society) | Social Welfare | TGT and PET |
| APTWREIS (Gurukulam) | Tribal Welfare | TGT, PGT, PD and PET |
| KGBV (Type III) | Samagra Shiksha | Principal, PGT, CRT, PET on contract, in a separate notification |
The Gurukulam is the Tribal Welfare society. The society's own website lists a family of institutions: Residential Schools, Residential Schools for particularly vulnerable groups, a Sports School, Mini Gurukulams, Eklavya Model Residential Schools, Residential Junior Colleges, a College of Excellence and a School of Excellence, among others. Posts in the 2025 notification are described at the level of the society, so a candidate selected for a Gurukulam TGT post is posted within the selected zone and may be placed in any of its schools, not only the institution she or he happens to know.
APREIS runs the Andhra Pradesh Residential schools and junior colleges. Its 2026-27 admission prospectus describes ten residential junior colleges, residential mode only, with one lecturer acting as a "loco-parent" to a group of fifteen to twenty students and a day that runs from physical exercise at the start to academic and co-curricular activity until ten at night. That description is about students, but it tells a prospective teacher something real: these are posts in institutions where staff share the residential routine.
Two points are easy to miss. First, the Principal posts in these societies are state posts in the notification, so a selected Principal may be posted anywhere in the state. Second, the society names in the notification are written in a compressed form such as "MJPAPBCWREIS". If you search a portal for the full name and find nothing, search again with the short form.
Two routes, two sets of rules
The most useful table in this guide is the comparison of the two routes, because the rules that look similar are not the same.
| Question | Mega DSC route (society schools) | KGBV route (Samagra Shiksha) |
|---|---|---|
| Who conducts it | School Education Department through the District Selection Committee process | Samagra Shiksha through a district-level committee chaired by the Collector |
| Nature of job | Regular appointment through merit and roster | Contract, one academic year, 2026-27 |
| Who can apply | All eligible candidates, men and women | Women only |
| Written test | Yes, computer based (TRT) | No written test; merit from marks in qualifications |
| TET | Needed for TGT, not for PGT, PD, PET, Principal | Needed for Principal, CRT and general PGT; not for PET and vocational PGT |
| Unit of selection | Zone or state, depending on the post | The district |
| Fee in the latest notification | Rs 750 per post | Rs 300 |
| Pay | Regular scale as per the notification and rules | Honorarium: Rs 34,139 (Principal), Rs 26,759 (PGT, CRT, PET) |
A candidate who treats a KGBV as a back door to a regular job will be disappointed: the notification states in plain words that appointments are purely on a contract or outsourcing basis, that they are temporary, and that the individual has no right to ask for regularisation, a minimum time scale or a higher honorarium. A KGBV post is a real teaching job with real responsibility, but it is a different kind of job.
The posts as they actually appear in Notification 02
The 2025 notification gave vacancies by management and by post. The totals are below.
| Management | TGT | PGT | PD | PET | Principal | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AP Model Schools | 248 | 23 | 0 | 0 | 15 | 286 |
| APREIS | 120 | 53 | 0 | 3 | 14 | 190 |
| MJPAPBCWREIS | 66 | 81 | 0 | 0 | 23 | 170 |
| APSWREIS | 392 | 0 | 0 | 47 | 0 | 439 |
| APTWREIS (Gurukulam) | 892 | 116 | 13 | 122 | 0 | 1,143 |
Three things stand out when you read the table with a candidate's eyes. The Gurukulam alone accounts for more than half of the notified total, and within it the TGT posts dominate. The Social Welfare society recruited TGT and PET only, with no PGT and no Principal posts in this notification. And Model Schools offered mostly TGT posts, with a small PGT list and a state-level Principal list.
The notification also lists the subjects. These lists change with every cycle, so use them to understand the shape of demand rather than to predict the next one.
| Gurukulam PGT (116) | Posts |
|---|---|
| English | 25 |
| Mathematics | 24 |
| Physical Science | 14 |
| Biological Science | 14 |
| Social | 14 |
| Telugu | 13 |
| Hindi | 12 |
| Gurukulam TGT (892) | Posts |
|---|---|
| Science | 169 |
| Mathematics | 167 |
| Telugu | 164 |
| Social | 162 |
| English | 151 |
| Hindi | 79 |
For Model Schools, the PGT posts (23) were spread across English, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Civics, Economics and Commerce, with Zoology the largest at eight. The TGT posts (248) covered Telugu 59, English 47, Hindi 2, Mathematics 30, Science 54 and Social 56. For the APREIS, the 53 PGT posts included Telugu, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Physical Science, Biological Science and Social, and the 120 TGT posts were in Telugu, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science and Social. For the Social Welfare society, the 392 TGT posts were divided into Telugu 97, English 86, Hindi 18, Mathematics 40, Physical Science 47, Biological Science 42 and Social 62. The BC society's 81 PGT posts and 66 TGT posts were split between general posts and posts in women's schools.
One quiet difference shows up here. Some societies list "Science" as one TGT subject, while the Social Welfare society lists Physical Science and Biological Science separately. A candidate who reads only a friend's summary may apply for the wrong subject label. Always read the subject name in the notification for the management you are applying to.
Posts that do not appear
Readers often ask about Junior Lecturer, Art and Craft, Music, Librarian and similar posts. None of these appears in Notification 02. The posts listed are Principal, PGT, TGT, PD and PET. Junior Lecturers in government junior colleges are recruited by the Public Service Commission, and the APPSC Junior Lecturer guide explains that route. Reports on other websites mention outsourced teaching and lecturer posts in the Gurukulam, but those reports were not verified from an official page for this guide, and the society's own website menu does not carry a recruitment section. If you see such an advertisement, check it on the society's official site before you pay anything.
Zonal posts and state posts
The jurisdiction of a post decides where you will work and how competition is counted. The 2025 notification describes it society by society. In the APREIS, all the posts were treated as state posts, so selection is at the state level. In the Model Schools, the Principal was a state post while the TGT and PGT were zonal. In the BC Welfare society, the Principal was a state post and the TGT and PGT were zonal. In the Social Welfare society, the TGT and PET were zonal. In the Gurukulam, the PGT, TGT, PD and PET were zonal.
A zonal post means that your claim is against the other candidates of that zone. The notification tabulated vacancies for four zones, and the numbers are very uneven. In the Gurukulam, Zone III had 309 TGT posts, while Zone II had 152. In the Model Schools, Zone IV had 151 of the 248 TGT posts, while Zone II had only 3. A candidate who can work in more than one zone should compare the zone tables before deciding where to apply; a candidate who cannot move should still read the roster, because a zone with many posts may still have none for a particular community and subject.
Local candidate status applies under the Presidential Order, and the 2025 verification list asks for study certificates from Class IV to X, or a residence certificate for the seven years before the SSC if the candidate appeared privately. Our post on local status and the reservation roster explains how that works.
How these posts differ from regular DSC posts
The regular DSC posts are School Assistant and Secondary Grade Teacher. The society posts are TGT and PGT, with PD, PET and Principal in addition. This is more than a change of name.
| Feature | Regular DSC (SA, SGT) | Society posts (TGT, PGT) |
|---|---|---|
| Level taught | SGT: primary classes. SA: upper primary and high school | TGT: upper classes of the school. PGT: senior classes up to the intermediate level |
| Qualification | SA: degree and B.Ed. SGT: Intermediate and D.El.Ed | TGT: degree and B.Ed. PGT: master's degree and B.Ed |
| TET | Required for SA (except PE) and SGT | Required for TGT; not for PGT |
| English proficiency paper | No | Yes for Principal, non-language PGT and non-language TGT; qualifying only |
| Marks structure | 80 written plus 20 TET | TGT: 80 plus 20. PGT, PD, Principal: 100 written |
| Unit | District for most posts | Zone or state |
The English proficiency paper is the single biggest practical difference. It exists for non-language posts and is only a qualifying test, but candidates who fail it are not evaluated further.
If you hold only a degree and B.Ed, SGT is not open to you under the rules reviewed, and TGT or School Assistant may be. If you hold a postgraduate degree, you can consider PGT posts in the societies, which have no TET requirement. That can be a real advantage for a candidate who has not yet cleared the TET. Our guides to the School Assistant and SGT posts explain the regular side of the story.
Eligibility in the 2025 notification
The qualifications below come from the post-wise table published with the 2025 certificate verification documents and from the information bulletin published with the 2024 notification of the same posts. They are a reference for what to check, not a guarantee for the next cycle.
| Post | Qualification printed in 2025 |
|---|---|
| Principal | Master's degree with 50% (45% for SC, ST, BC) plus B.Ed; experience also required |
| PGT | Master's degree with 50% (45% for SC, ST, BC) plus B.Ed, in the subject concerned |
| TGT | Bachelor's degree with 50% (45% for SC, ST, BC) plus B.Ed, with the subject combination for the post |
| PD | Graduation plus B.P.Ed or M.P.Ed |
| PET | Intermediate plus UGDPEd |
Candidates who passed the qualifying degree before 2011 had a lower percentage bar (45%, and 40% for the reserved groups). A TGT for a special education post also needed the special B.Ed. A candidate who studied one subject at degree level and the second at postgraduate level was allowed for the combined-subject posts in the bulletin's note.
The experience condition for Principal is worth reading in the bulletin. The 2024 bulletin required either three years as Principal or Vice-Principal in a recognised senior secondary school that dealt with English medium, five years in a Group B or PGT or lecturer post in such an institution, or five years as a headmaster in a recognised secondary school. The District Educational Officer or an authority appointed by the Commissioner verifies the experience certificates against school records, and a certificate found not genuine ends the candidature.
On age, the 2025 notification printed 18 to 44 years as on 1 July 2024, with 49 for SC, ST, BC and EWS candidates and 54 for persons with benchmark disabilities. For ex-servicemen, the length of service and three more years are deducted from the actual age. Our age limit and relaxation guide collects these rules, and the reference date will change in any new notification.
For TGT, a valid APTET or CTET result is required; our AP TET guide explains the papers. The bulletin also said that a candidate who is in the final year of the qualifying course may apply if the qualification is completed by the date of certificate verification, but the 2025 notification printed a stricter rule: every certificate had to be in hand on the last date for applications, 15 May 2025, with no relaxation. Read the current wording whenever a new notification appears, because this is the kind of rule that changes.
Selection, weightage and the English paper
The detailed paper pattern for these posts is in our AP DSC exam pattern and marks guide, so this section gives the outline and the points that are specific to society posts.
For TGT, Paper I is the English language proficiency test (100 MCQs, 100 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, Intermediate level, qualifying only). Paper II is 160 MCQs for 80 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes, covering general knowledge, perspectives in education, classroom implications of psychology, subject content and methodology. The remaining 20 marks of the 100 come from the TET weightage. For PGT, the test is a 200-MCQ paper for 100 marks in 3 hours, with content and methodology, and no TET. For Principal, the paper is also 200 MCQs for 100 marks and carries school administration, leadership and finance sections. For PD and PET, the written paper is 200 MCQs for 100 marks, and there is no separate physical test in the documents reviewed.
The English proficiency paper deserves special attention. Qualifying marks were 60 for OC, BC and EWS, and 50 for SC, ST, PH and ex-servicemen. Marks are not counted for merit, but a candidate who does not reach the minimum has the second paper left unevaluated. The 2025 notification states that this paper applies to Principal, PGT (non-language) and TGT (non-language) only.
The notification fixes other rules for the whole process. Selection is by merit cum roster. The number of selected candidates cannot exceed the number of vacancies, and there is no waiting list; posts left unfilled are carried forward. Normalisation is applied to the multi-shift computer-based test. The computer-based test was scheduled from 6 June to 6 July 2025, with the initial key two days after the last exam, objections within seven days, the final key seven days after objections, and the merit list seven days later. In practice, a press note put the merit lists on the portal from 22 August 2025 and called candidates for certificate verification from 28 August 2025.
The preference rule can change your outcome
The 2025 notification contains a rule that affects strategy more than most candidates realise. A candidate may apply for more than one post under different managements, and must give an order of preference. The order cannot be changed after submission. If a candidate is selected for a post on the basis of preference, the name is removed from all other selection lists. In other words, one person gets one post, and it is the highest-preference post for which she or he falls within the zone of selection.
Think about what that means with an example. A candidate holds a postgraduate degree in English with a B.Ed and has cleared the TET. She could apply for PGT English in the Gurukulam, PGT English in the BC society, TGT English in the Model Schools and School Assistant English in regular schools. If she ranks the Gurukulam PGT first and falls within the selection zone for it, the other options are gone. If she ranks a regular School Assistant post first and misses it by a few places, the system then moves to her second preference. The order is a bet about where she is strongest, and the notification warns that options exercised in the online application are final.
Fees add a second constraint. The fee in 2025 was Rs 750 for each post separately, so five applications cost Rs 3,750. A candidate should apply for the posts for which she or he has done the preparation, not for every post that is technically open.
KGBV teacher posts in detail
The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas are residential schools for girls, and the 2026 notification covers Type-III KGBVs, 352 of them, in the state except East Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur districts. Total teaching vacancies are 299.
| Post | Vacancies | Honorarium per month |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | 16 | Rs 34,139 |
| PGT | 98 | Rs 26,759 |
| CRT (Contract Residential Teacher) | 133 | Rs 26,759 |
| PET | 52 | Rs 26,759 |
The selection process is entirely merit based. There is no written test. Marks are given for academic performance, and the notification lists weightage by qualification. For a Principal or PGT, the weightage is SSC 20, Intermediate 10, bachelor's degree 20, master's degree 30 and B.Ed or M.A. (Education) 20. For a CRT, it is SSC 20, Intermediate 20, bachelor's degree 30 and B.Ed 30. For a PET, it is SSC 20, Intermediate 40 and UGDPEd or B.P.Ed 40. Each weightage is proportional: marks obtained divided by maximum marks, multiplied by the weightage. Where a university uses grade points, the notification converts CGPA to a percentage by multiplying by 9.5.
Here are worked examples with made-up numbers, to show how the merit is built.
A CRT. SSC 520 of 600 gives 520/600 x 20 = 17.33. Intermediate 800 of 1,000 gives 16.00. A degree with 70 per cent gives 21.00. A B.Ed with 80 per cent gives 24.00. The total is 78.33.
A PGT. SSC 540 of 600 gives 18.00. Intermediate 850 of 1,000 gives 8.50. A degree with 72 per cent gives 14.40. A postgraduate degree with 68 per cent gives 20.40. A B.Ed with 78 per cent gives 15.60. The total is 76.90.
A PET. SSC 480 of 600 gives 16.00. Intermediate 700 of 1,000 gives 28.00. A B.P.Ed with 75 per cent gives 30.00. The total is 74.00.
An important point follows. In a merit-only selection, Intermediate marks matter very differently by post. For a PET they carry 40 of 100, twice as much as for a CRT and four times as much as for a PGT. Past marks cannot be changed, but the choice of which post to apply for can be informed by this arithmetic. The notification also warns that a candidate who enters higher marks than she actually obtained is liable to be debarred from all government jobs in future. Enter marks from your memos exactly.
If two candidates tie on marks, the older candidate ranks higher. If dates of birth are also the same, community order decides, starting with ST, then SC (Groups I, II, III), then BC (A to E), and then OC.
Eligibility and ineligibility for KGBV
Age is 18 to 45 as on 1 July 2025, with 50 for SC, ST, BC and EWS, 52 for physically challenged candidates, and 45 for ex-service women. All posts are for women. A person with disability is not eligible for the PET post. The TET is required for Principal, CRT and general-subject PGT posts. English is the medium of instruction in all KGBVs, and the notification states that applicants should be able to teach in English medium, and that English must have been studied as a subject up to graduation level.
A PGT in a vocational subject is possible too: the notification lists Accounting and Taxation, Computer Science Engineering, Pre-School Teacher Training, Medical Lab Technician, Multi-Purpose Health Worker and General Foundation Course, each with its own qualification. TET is not required for those vocational PGT posts.
The notification lists reasons for ineligibility: earlier termination from a KGBV on disciplinary or financial grounds, no TET where required, being in the final year of a degree, postgraduate degree or B.Ed during 2025-26, and applying without a proper local certificate. Local status means seven consecutive years of study from Class 4 to Class 10 in the district; if a candidate studied three years in one district and four in another, the four-year district counts.
The process in 2026
The notification fixed a schedule: online applications from 27 May to 5 June 2026, a shortlist at 1:3 ratio on 7 June, certificate verification on 9 June, final merit list by 12 June and appointment orders by 18 June. On the ground the district processes ran later. The Vizianagaram district website, for example, carried a tentative merit list on 23 July 2026 and a 1:3 list for certificate verification on 7 August 2026, with verification on 11 August 2026. That shows why a date in a notification is a plan: check your own district's website for the real dates.
The notification is also stated to be subject to the outcome of court cases pending before the High Court, and the State Project Director has the right to cancel or complete the recruitment at any time. Contract appointments are for one academic year, signed on a Rs 100 bond paper, and performance is measured on results, lesson plans, diary writing and behaviour with students and staff.
How to choose between these routes
Use the following questions, in order, rather than choosing by salary alone.
- Do you have the TET? If not, PGT in the societies (with a postgraduate degree) and PD or PET do not need it, while TGT and KGBV CRT do.
- Which degree do you hold? A bachelor's degree with B.Ed points to TGT, CRT or School Assistant. A master's degree with B.Ed opens PGT.
- Are you a woman? KGBV posts are for women only, and the roster for general candidates is filled with women of the same community.
- Do you want a regular post or a contract? Society posts go through merit cum roster as regular appointments. KGBV is for one academic year.
- Can you work in a residential setting? These institutions run on residential routines. The APREIS prospectus describes a loco-parent system and a long day. Think honestly about whether that suits you.
- Which zone or district? Compare the zone tables and the district tables, and keep your local certificate in order.
Preparation: a 12-week plan for society posts
The syllabus is the same suggestive syllabus used for the DSC, so the AP DSC syllabus 2026 guide is your base, and the 90-day preparation plan gives a longer timetable. The plan below adds the points that are specific to society posts.
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Official documents, eligibility check, documents folder | A one-page checklist of your own eligibility |
| 3 to 5 | English proficiency (Intermediate level), reading and grammar | Daily 25-question timed sets |
| 6 to 8 | Subject content for your post, plus perspectives in education | Topic notes and error log |
| 9 to 10 | Methodology and psychology | 40 questions a day on methodology |
| 11 | Current affairs and general knowledge | A one-page monthly summary |
| 12 | Full-length timed papers | Two papers a week, with analysis |
The English paper is where many strong subject candidates lose their chance, because they treat it as an afterthought. Qualifying marks of 60 out of 100 for OC, BC and EWS candidates are not trivial in a timed computer test, and the marks do not help in the merit list. Keep a fixed daily slot for English from the first week: a short passage, five vocabulary items in context, and ten questions on grammar and usage. In the last month, take the English paper under exam timing, since the paper has 100 questions for 90 minutes, about 54 seconds each.
For TGT and PGT candidates, the methodology section carries a large share of marks (20 of 80 for TGT and 20 of 100 for PGT in the pattern reviewed). Our psychology and pedagogy guide covers the common ground. For PD and PET, the content is physical education: pedagogy, content, organisation and administration, history, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and biomechanics, health education and sports injuries, yoga, recreation, sports training, wellness, sports management, research and statistics, officiating and coaching.
For KGBV, the preparation is different, because there is no written test. The work is documentation: clear TET result, accurate marks entered exactly as on the memos, a valid local certificate, community certificate and a ready set of originals for the 1:3 verification. A candidate who is careful here gains more than one who spends weeks on an exam that does not exist.
Mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming one DSC covers every school | Society posts have their own notification and rules | Read the notification for the management you want |
| Ignoring the English paper | Fail it and the main paper is not evaluated | Practise it from week 1 |
| Applying for every post | Fee per post and a fixed preference order | Choose posts you can prepare for |
| Misreading "Science" and "Physical Science" | Different subject labels in different societies | Read the subject name in the notification |
| Forgetting the zone | Zonal posts compete within the zone | Read the zone table before applying |
| Treating KGBV as permanent | The notification says contract and no regularisation | Plan with a one-year view |
| Entering wrong marks | Debarment from all government jobs is possible | Copy marks from the memos |

Frequently asked questions
Is there an open notification for Gurukulam or Model School teachers? Not on the official portal as on 7 October 2026. The latest is Notification 02 of 20 April 2025. A press report expects a DSC notification around 15 October 2026, which is not an official announcement.
Do PGT and TGT in Gurukulam schools have the same rules as in Model Schools? The qualification and exam structure were the same in 2025, but the jurisdiction, subjects and vacancies were set society by society. Zonal posts compete within a zone, and APREIS posts were state posts.
Can I apply for more than one post? In 2025, yes, with a separate fee for each post and a fixed order of preference. Selection for one post removes you from the other lists.
Is the TET needed for PGT? Not in the 2025 rules. TGT needed the TET, while PGT, PD, PET and Principal did not.
Are Art and Craft, Music or Junior Lecturer posts part of this recruitment? They are not in Notification 02. Check the society's official website for any separate notice.
Is the KGBV job permanent? No. The 2026 notification states that appointments are on a contract or outsourcing basis for one academic year, with no right to regularisation.
Is there a written test for KGBV posts? No. Selection is by merit, using weightage for SSC, Intermediate, degree, postgraduate degree and professional qualification as the post requires.
Where do I find the real dates for KGBV? On the Samagra Shiksha KGBV recruitment site and your district's website. The notification's dates were a plan, and district processes moved later.
