CSPDCL Junior Engineer and Lineman Recruitment 2026: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation Guide
Start a free mock test Practice by topic

Electricity supply in Chhattisgarh touches every home, farm and factory, and the companies that run it always need technical staff. The Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) handles the distribution of electricity in the state. It is part of the group of Chhattisgarh state power companies, which have separate companies for generation, transmission and distribution. The main work of CSPDCL is to deliver power to consumers, maintain lines and substations, manage bills and connections, and provide consumer service. To do this, the company advertises from time to time for Junior Engineers, Linemen (technicians), assistant grade staff and other posts.

An honest warning first. Recruitment at CSPDCL does not run on one fixed examination format. Which qualification a post asks for, how many stages there are, which agency conducts the test and how many marks it carries can be different in every advertisement. In some cycles an ITI certificate has been asked for, in others a diploma, and in some both for different posts. Everything here is therefore general information, and the final decision should rest on the company's current notification (the company's official website and official advertisement). We are deliberately not giving figures such as salary, vacancies, fees, dates or physical standards.

Latest Notification and How the Recruitment Cycle Works

CSPDCL is a public sector company, so its recruitment process is not like a Commission's recruitment. The company announces recruitment according to the requirement of its personnel department. In some cycles the examination has been conducted by an agency appointed by the company or by a state examination body, and in others through a different arrangement. So it is not right to assume that the application portal, the name of the examination and the selecting agency will be the same every time.

Stage What generally happens Keep in mind
Advertisement Posts, qualification, age and method of applying Read the whole advertisement
Online application Registration and fee on the prescribed portal Use only the official link
Written examination Generally objective, technical and general Pattern from the advertisement
Other tests Skill or physical test, depending on the post (where held) Check post by post
Document verification Checking of qualification and certificates Carry original certificates
Final selection As per merit and rules See the company's notices

Because the company's recruitment is advertisement-based, there can be gaps of several months between advertisements. Use that time to build your foundation. For announcements about recruitment, exam dates and results you can look at the pareeksha.in news service, but for confirmation always go to the company's official sources.

One more caution: fake websites and WhatsApp messages stay active in the name of recruitment, asking for money for a "guaranteed job". In the recruitment of a government company, no one needs to pay an intermediary to get selected. Apply only through the portal given in the official advertisement.

The Posts and the Work

Junior Engineer

A Junior Engineer plays the role of technical supervisor in the distribution system. Generally the duties are:

  • Supervising the maintenance of substations, feeders and distribution transformers.
  • Surveying for new connections, calculating load and preparing estimates.
  • Resolving complaints, tracing faults when power is off and getting repairs done.
  • Safety checks on lines, and compliance with earthing and safety standards.
  • Supervising the work of linemen and other staff, keeping records and reporting.

Lineman (Technician)

The lineman does the construction, maintenance and repair of lines in the field. This includes climbing electric poles, repairing wires, working on transformers, replacing fuses and cut-outs, locating faults when power fails, and at times working in difficult weather or at night. It is a physically demanding post and rests on the discipline of safety, because a small lapse can be fatal. That is why power companies value knowledge of safety rules in this post.

Other names and levels of the post (such as assistant line technician or line attendant) can differ in the company's advertisement. Do not go by names; go by the qualification and the description of work.

Structure of Posts

In the company's advertisement, posts are shown by region or circle and by category. The division into reserved and unreserved posts follows the state's rules, and horizontal reservation for women, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen may apply. The number of vacancies is different in every cycle. We will not give a number, and you too should not trust any number without the advertisement.

Eligibility

This is where the variation is greatest, so read carefully.

Educational Qualification

  • Junior Engineer: Generally a diploma in engineering in electrical or a related branch is asked for. In some cycles there have been different rules about degree holders, and in some the diploma was treated as the minimum. So look for the "diploma or degree" condition only in the current advertisement.
  • Lineman / technician: Generally an ITI certificate in a relevant trade, such as electrician or wireman, along with class ten or twelve is asked for. Sometimes a diploma is treated as equivalent and sometimes not. Check the exact name of the trade, NCVT/SCVT recognition and benefits such as apprenticeship according to the advertisement.
  • The list of branches, minimum marks and recognition is given in every advertisement.

Age Limit

The age limit differs by post and advertisement, and the date of calculation is written in the advertisement. Natives of Chhattisgarh and reserved categories generally get relaxation in age. How much, see the advertisement.

Domicile and Reservation

For many posts there have been conditions of Chhattisgarh domicile or local reservation. Check in advance the validity and format of the domicile certificate, the caste certificate and other documents.

Physical and Medical Standards

For the post of lineman, some cycles have included physical efficiency or medical standards, such as rules on height or eyesight, and sometimes a pole-climbing test. We are not writing exact standards because they are specific to each advertisement. In preparation it is good to build general fitness, stamina and confidence in working at height.

Application Process

Applications are generally online, and the link to the prescribed portal is given in the advertisement. The general process is: registration, personal and educational details, photograph and signature, payment of the fee and keeping a copy of the application. The fee is fixed by category and stated in the advertisement. Fill in details such as ITI or diploma marks and year exactly as in your marksheet, because mistakes are caught later at verification. The trade name and session must be clear on the ITI certificate; those who have not yet received their certificate should check whether a provisional certificate is accepted under the advertisement.

Stages of Selection

In CSPDCL selection the written examination has generally been the main basis. For Junior Engineer there is the technical subject (electrical) and a general section, while for lineman there are ITI-level technical questions and general knowledge. In some places a skill test, physical test or interview has also been provided. In some cycles merit was decided wholly by the written examination, while in others qualification marks also contributed. So look in the selection method of the advertisement at which stages exist and what weight they carry.

Exam Pattern (General Outline)

Aspect Junior Engineer (generally) Lineman (generally)
Nature Objective multiple choice Objective multiple choice
Main section Electrical engineering (diploma level) ITI electrician / wireman level
General section General knowledge, maths, reasoning, Chhattisgarh GK General knowledge, maths, language
Marks, time, negative marking Check the advertisement Check the advertisement
Other tests As per the advertisement Skill/physical (where applicable)

One thing is clear from the table: the level of questions for lineman and Junior Engineer differs, but the core of both is the basic concepts of electricity. A candidate who prepares first for lineman and then moves to the diploma level has a strong foundation.

Detailed Syllabus and How to Study

1. Basic Principles of Electricity

Current, voltage, resistance, power and energy, Ohm's law, series and parallel combinations, Kirchhoff's laws, resistivity and the effect of temperature, and units of electricity (1 unit = 1 kilowatt-hour). This is the most basic chapter and the source of the largest number of direct questions. Practise formulae along with diagrams, for example finding the total resistance by connecting three resistors.

2. AC and DC Circuits

Alternating current, frequency, RMS value, reactance, impedance, power factor, and star and delta connections in the three-phase system. At diploma level, the power factor and the formula for three-phase power are commonly asked. Link the concept to daily life: why single-phase supply at home and three-phase in industry.

3. Transformers

Working principle (mutual induction), ratio, the relationship between voltage and current, losses (iron and copper), efficiency, the role of the distribution transformer and cooling methods. The fact that a transformer works only on AC appears in nearly every examination in one form or another.

4. Electrical Machines

DC motors and generators, the principle of the induction motor, slip, the formula for synchronous speed, basics of the synchronous machine and the use of starters.

5. Power System, Distribution and Transmission

The chain from generation to consumer (generation, transmission, sub-transmission, distribution), voltage levels, systems of distribution (radial, ring), substations, bus-bars, isolators, circuit breakers, relays, lightning arresters and earthing. For a distribution company like CSPDCL this section is especially important, because the questions relate to the actual job.

6. Electrical Safety and Equipment

Fuses, MCB, ELCB/RCCB, purpose of earthing, earth resistance, protection from electric shock, use of rubber gloves and tools, the procedure of cutting power and earthing before working on a line (lockout-tagout), and first aid. For a lineman this part matters most, and these days safety-scenario questions are also asked in the examination.

7. Measurement and Control

Working of the ammeter, voltmeter, wattmeter and energy meter (unit meter), use of a multimeter, errors in measurement and general knowledge of smart meters.

8. Practical Knowledge of the ITI Trade (for Lineman)

Methods of wiring, wire gauge, joints and terminations, names and uses of tools, poles and cross-arms, stays and earthing, and safety when working at the height of a pole.

9. General Knowledge and Chhattisgarh GK

Formation of the state, districts, rivers, minerals, power plants (the coal-based power belt of Korba), tribes, folk arts, culture and basic facts about the state. In a power company's examination it is natural to have questions on the state's energy sector, so keep general knowledge of the structure of the company (generation, transmission, distribution and the holding company).

10. Mathematics and Reasoning

Ratio, percentage, average, time and work, profit and loss, common geometry formulae, series, coding-decoding and direction. For ITI-level candidates this part of mathematics is often a challenge, so keep fifteen to twenty minutes of daily practice.

11. English and Language

Since the examination is often bilingual, candidates should practise the language section in the language they choose: synonyms, antonyms, fill in the blanks, sentence correction and short comprehension. It is a relatively easy section, and with right practice nearly full marks can be scored.

Salary and Career Growth

Salary differs by post and by recruitment advertisement. The company's pay structure and allowances are revised from time to time, and in the initial period there is sometimes a different pay during probation. We are therefore not stating any amount; treat the pay scale or pay band written in the advertisement as your basis. Allowances, medical facilities and retirement benefits in the service conditions depend on company policy, which is made clear in the advertisement or the appointment order.

On the career side, from the post of lineman or technician, the way to departmental promotion and senior technical posts is built according to the company's rules. A Junior Engineer can move on to Assistant Engineer and higher posts, but for this one has to look at the promotion rules, experience and sometimes a departmental examination. Technical staff also get opportunities for additional training and safety certification, which improve work efficiency.

Trends from Past Years

In qualitative terms, the following can be said about past cycles.

  • More weight on the technical subject. The largest share of merit has generally come from technical questions. General knowledge and mathematics create differences, but the technical subject remains the base.
  • Questions on basic concepts. Basic questions on Ohm's law, transformers, earthing, fuses and machines appear again and again. Complex engineering analysis appears very little.
  • Safety-based questions. In the context of linemen and a distribution company, questions on safety equipment and procedures are increasing.
  • Very large numbers of applications. These posts attract ITI and diploma holders in large numbers, so competition has been strong in every cycle. Missing selection by a very small margin is not unusual.
  • Changes in recruitment rules. At times the qualification, at times the selection process and at times the examination agency has changed. Do not apply the experience of an old cycle blindly to a new one.

Cut-off marks have changed by post, category and cycle. No number can be fixed. Look at the results of your own practice and aim to keep doing better than your previous score.

Solved Practice Questions

Question 1. What is the SI unit of resistivity? Answer: Ohm-metre (Ω·m). The unit of resistance is the ohm, but resistivity, as a property of a material, is measured in ohm-metre.

Question 2. What is the power of an appliance drawing 10 amperes at 230 volts? Answer: 2300 watts (2.3 kilowatts). P = V × I = 230 × 10.

Question 3. How many units of electricity does a 2 kilowatt heater use in 5 hours? Answer: 10 units. Energy = power × time = 2 kW × 5 h = 10 kWh, and one unit is one kilowatt-hour.

Question 4. On what principle does a transformer work, and on what kind of supply does it operate? Answer: On the principle of mutual induction, and only on alternating current (AC). On DC there is no continuously changing magnetic field, so no voltage transformation takes place.

Question 5. How is a fuse connected in a circuit? Answer: In series, and in the live (phase) wire. On excess current the fuse wire melts and opens the circuit, protecting the appliance.

Question 6. What should be done first before starting repair on a line? Answer: Switch the line off (isolate it), earth it, confirm safety, and put a tag on the switched-off position. Touching a line without testing, assuming it is dead, is dangerous.

Question 7. What is the main purpose of earthing? Answer: To carry the current safely to the ground if there is leakage in the metal frame of an equipment, so that no person gets a shock and the protective devices operate.

Question 8. A can finish a job in 10 days and B in 15 days. In how many days will they finish it together? Answer: 6 days. Work per day is 1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6, so 6 days.

Question 9. If A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 and so on, what is the sum of the code values of "CAT"? Answer: 24. C = 3, A = 1, T = 20, and 3 + 1 + 20 = 24.

Question 10. Choose a synonym of "swift": slow, rapid, heavy, silent. Answer: Rapid.

Question 11. For which industry is the Korba region of Chhattisgarh mainly known? Answer: Coal mining and coal-based thermal power generation. That is why Korba is known as the state's energy centre.

Question 12. In a star-connected three-phase system, what is the relationship between line voltage and phase voltage? Answer: Line voltage = √3 × phase voltage, while line current and phase current are equal.

Question 13. A 60 W bulb is replaced by a 10 W LED giving similar light. If used 5 hours a day for 30 days, how many units are saved in a month? Answer: 7.5 units. Saving = (60 − 10) W = 0.05 kW; 0.05 × 5 × 30 = 7.5 kWh.

Question 14. A wire has resistance 8 ohms. If it is cut into two equal halves and the halves are joined in parallel, what is the resulting resistance? Answer: 2 ohms. Each half is 4 ohms; two 4-ohm resistors in parallel give 4 × 4 ÷ (4 + 4) = 2 ohms.

Month-by-Month Preparation Plan (Six to Nine Months)

Month Technical General
1 Basic principles of electricity, Ohm, Kirchhoff, units Foundation of maths: ratio, percentage
2 AC/DC circuits, three-phase Language: basics of grammar
3 Transformers and machines Chhattisgarh GK: geography and rivers
4 Power system, distribution, protective equipment History, culture, the energy sector
5 Measurement, wiring, earthing, the practical part for lineman Reasoning and data
6 First complete revision cycle, old papers Current affairs
7-8 Full mock tests, analysis of mistakes Practice of speed and accuracy
9 Light revision, documents and physical preparation (where applicable) Brief revision

For a lineman, if a physical test is expected, focus on regular running, physical capacity that can be practised for climbing at height, and safety training, but do not run after any standard without the advertisement.

Books and Resources

Your ITI and diploma textbooks are the most dependable base material, because questions come at that level. Instead of buying many books by different authors, pick one standard book and complete it two or three times. For electrical safety, the safety guidelines of the company or of state electricity authorities are helpful. Past papers, especially those of power companies and state technical recruitments, are useful for understanding the level. For Chhattisgarh GK, school-level state-based books and reliable online sources are enough.

A tip: after every chapter, write five short questions of your own. Making your own questions deepens the concept.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring the eligibility in the advertisement. First check whether your ITI trade or diploma branch is valid for that post.
  • Treating safety as secondary. In the examination as well as on the job, safety questions show how seriously you take the work.
  • Avoiding mathematics. Many technically capable candidates fall behind by scoring low in mathematics.
  • Thinking only of lineman or only of Junior Engineer. Depending on your qualification, there is a lot of shared ground in preparing for both levels.
  • Trusting fake recruitment messages. Do not pay anyone except through official sources.
  • Assuming the rules from the previous cycle. Every advertisement can bring new conditions.
