STOCKHOLM, October 5 — The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm formally inaugurated the 2026 Nobel Prize announcements by conferring the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, celebrating pathbreaking discoveries in cellular immunogenetics, T-cell receptor biology, and targetable monoclonal therapeutics.
The Nobel committee highlighted that the laureates' foundational work unravelled key molecular signaling cascades regulating immune tolerance, directly unlocking next-generation cellular immunotherapies capable of eradicating recalcitrant solid tumors and managing life-threatening autoimmune conditions. The award carries a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million), an 18-carat gold medal, and a citation diploma.
In accordance with institutional schedules, the medicine announcement begins the traditional Nobel week, followed across subsequent days by physics, chemistry, literature, the Nobel Peace Prize (announced in Oslo by the Norwegian Nobel Committee), and concluding with the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. The formal investiture ceremonies will take place on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel.
Nobel laureates, nominating academies, and biotechnology milestones are standard questions in UPSC General Studies Paper III (Science & Technology), SSC CGL, and State PSC current affairs. Candidates should note that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded since 1901 by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in accordance with the 1895 will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
