NEW DELHI, October 5 — The global community observed World Habitat Day on October 5, 2026, designated annually by the United Nations on the first Monday of October to reflect on the state of human settlements and the universal human right to adequate shelter.
Marking the occasion, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) convened a national symposium reviewing progress across flagship urban development engines, notably the Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0), and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0). Discussions prioritized climate-resilient construction methodologies, circular municipal solid waste valorization, and public transit-oriented development across India's rapidly growing secondary urban agglomerations.
Officials underscored that operational Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) across 100 Smart Cities have evolved into regional disaster response and civic service coordination hubs. Concurrently, specialized central grants are incentivizing municipal corporations to float municipal green bonds for water recycling infrastructure.
Urbanization dynamics, slum rehabilitation jurisprudence, and UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) constitute high-frequency themes in UPSC Civil Services Mains (GS Paper I & II). Candidates should know that World Habitat Day was instituted by UN General Assembly Resolution 40/202 in 1985 and was first observed in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme "Shelter is My Right."
