NEW DELHI, October 6 — The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced on Tuesday that the flagship residential solar rooftop program, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has surpassed 1.5 crore (15 million) household applicant registrations on its unified national portal `pmsuryaghar.gov.in`.
Official deployment statistics revealed that over 750,000 residential rooftop solar installations have achieved physical grid synchronization and net-metering integration across the country, adding over 2.5 GW of decentralized solar generation capacity. Under the structured Central Financial Assistance (CFA) schedule, the scheme delivers direct DBT subsidies of ₹30,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹60,000 for a 2 kW array, and a maximum of ₹78,000 for rooftop installations of 3 kW or higher capacity.
Ministerial leadership emphasized that the initiative guarantees up to 300 units of free clean electricity monthly to participating households, eliminating recurring domestic utility bills while enabling prosumers to earn supplementary revenue by feeding surplus power back into state distribution companies (DISCOMs). The accelerated rollout has also stimulated extensive grassroots employment for certified solar PV installers, grid technicians, and domestic module fabrication units.
Decentralized solar architectures, renewable energy feed-in tariffs, net metering mechanisms, and India's COP26 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) represent critical topics in UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Renewable Energy and Environment). Candidates should note that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, with a Cabinet-sanctioned financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore aimed at saturating 10 million domestic rooftops.
