NEW DELHI, October 6 — Union Minister of Commerce and Industry and Swiss President Guy Parmelin jointly addressed the 2nd India-EFTA Prosperity Summit in the national capital on Tuesday, formally unveiling the implementation roadmap for catalyzing $100 billion in committed foreign direct investment (FDI) under the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
Addressing a high-level conclave comprising sovereign fund managers and corporate chiefs from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, ministers outlined priority industrial corridors earmarked for European capital deployment. The strategic blueprint targets key frontier domains including precision engineering, medical devices, biotechnology, green hydrogen, and advanced semiconductor packaging, structured to generate one million direct manufacturing and research jobs over the next fifteen years.
The Commerce Minister emphasized that TEPA represents a paradigm shift in international trade agreements as the first bilateral pact explicitly linking tariff liberalization to enforceable foreign investment commitments into domestic manufacturing ecosystems. President Parmelin commended India's digital public infrastructure, logistics reforms under PM GatiShakti, and stable macroeconomic fundamentals, affirming that EFTA enterprises view India as an indispensable production hub in diversified global supply chains.
The institutional composition of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), TEPA legal provisions, foreign direct investment regulations, and bilateral commercial treaties constitute high-priority themes across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: International Relations and GS-III: Economy). Candidates should recall that EFTA was founded in 1960 under the Stockholm Convention as an alternative European trade grouping, comprising four non-EU nations (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein), and concluded negotiations on the milestone TEPA accord with India in March 2024.
