NEW DELHI, October 4 — The President of the Swiss Confederation, H.E. Mr. Guy Parmelin, arrived in New Delhi leading a high-level ministerial, business, and innovation delegation for an official three-day State visit to India from October 5 to October 7, 2026.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Parmelin will conduct delegation-level talks evaluating bilateral cooperation across precision engineering, pharmaceutical biotechnology, clean tech, and vocational education. A centerpiece of the visit is the President's participation in the 2nd India–EFTA Prosperity Summit on October 7, marking the first anniversary of the landmark India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
Under the India-EFTA TEPA, member states of the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) have committed $100 billion in binding foreign direct investment into India over a 15-year horizon, projected to generate over 1 million direct domestic manufacturing and technology jobs while granting zero-tariff entry for Indian industrial goods.
Trade blocs, bilateral investment pacts, and European economic integration are essential topics in civil services and international relations examinations. Candidates should remember that EFTA was established in 1960 under the Stockholm Convention as an alternative European trade grouping and comprises four nations: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
