NEW DELHI, October 16 — The Ministry of Civil Aviation on Friday completed the operational rollout of the 'DigiYatra' biometric facial recognition boarding ecosystem across 14 additional domestic airports, significantly scaling seamless, paperless passenger transit infrastructure.
The operational expansion integrates key regional aviation hubs—including Srinagar, Amritsar, Indore, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Bhubaneswar, and Dehradun—expanding total DigiYatra-enabled commercial airports in India to 38. The underlying platform leverages a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) verifiable credential architecture, ensuring passenger facial templates remain encrypted locally within candidate smartphones rather than stored in a centralized surveillance database.
Aviation authorities noted that biometric passage reduces security dwell times to an average of five to eight seconds per traveler at terminal entry, Pre-Embarkation Security Checks (PESC), and boarding gates, eliminating manual boarding pass inspections and trimming peak-hour terminal congestion by over 60 percent.
The governance architecture of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP 2016), the statutory data protection safeguards under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023, the constitutional scope of privacy rights under the Justice K.S. Puttaswamy judgment (2017), and the UDAN regional connectivity scheme represent core topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: Fundamental Rights & Governance, GS-III: Infrastructure).
