The method · विधि

  1. Last digit gives two candidates ·

    Last digit of the square → possible last digits of the root: 1 → 1 or 9; 4 → 2 or 8; 9 → 3 or 7; 6 → 4 or 6; 5 → 5; 0 → 0.

  2. First pair gives the tens digit ·

    Take the digits left of the last two, as a number P. The tens digit is the largest n with n² ≤ P. For 2209: P = 22, 4² = 16 ≤ 22 < 25 → tens digit 4.

  3. Choose between the two candidates ·

    Compare P with n × (n + 1). If P is larger, take the bigger last-digit candidate; if smaller, take the smaller. 2209: 22 > 4 × 5 = 20 → pick 7 → 47.

Worked examples ·

√2209 = 47
  • √2209: P = 22, tens 4
  • Ends in 9 → 3 or 7; 22 > 20 → 7
  • = 47
√1764 = 42
  • √1764: P = 17, tens 4
  • Ends in 4 → 2 or 8; 17 < 20 → 2
  • = 42
√5329 = 73
  • √5329: P = 53, tens 7
  • Ends in 9 → 3 or 7; 53 < 7 × 8 = 56 → 3
  • = 73
√9604 = 98
  • √9604: P = 96, tens 9
  • Ends in 4 → 2 or 8; 96 > 9 × 10 = 90 → 8
  • = 98
√15625 = 125
  • √15625: ends in 25 → root ends in 5
  • Left part 156: 12² = 144 ≤ 156 < 169 → 12
  • = 125

Why it works ·

Last digit comes from the unit digit of squares. The tens digit comes from (10n + u)² ≈ 100n², so n² ≤ P. The comparison with n(n + 1) works because (10n + 5)² = 100·n(n + 1) + 25 is the dividing line between u below 5 and u above 5.

Common trap ·

This method is only for perfect squares. First check the last digit (a square cannot end in 2, 3, 7 or 8) and the digit root (0, 1, 4, 7).

When it stops helping ·

For non-perfect squares keep the common values: √2 ≈ 1.414, √3 ≈ 1.732, √5 ≈ 2.236, √6 ≈ 2.449, √7 ≈ 2.646.
