A job in the Fire Services is different from most government jobs that candidates in Andhra Pradesh prepare for. The work is physical, the day can change in a minute, and the department has its own cadre of posts, its own service rules and its own training school. Yet most online explanations treat the Fireman post as a small footnote to the police constable recruitment, and say almost nothing about the Driver Operator post, the Station Fire Officer post or the way people move up the ladder.
This guide covers the Fire Services as a career path. It explains what the department is, which posts exist, what the two 2026 notifications of the State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) say, how the Driver Operator selection differs from the Fireman selection, where the Station Fire Officer post comes from, and how to prepare. To avoid repeating other posts, the physical measurement and efficiency tests are summarised and linked; the detailed event-wise training is in our AP Police PMT and PET guide, and the wider list of posts open after Intermediate is in Government jobs after Intermediate.
Position as on 7 October 2026. Two recruitment notifications for the State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department have been issued by the SLPRB, and the application window for neither has been announced. Firemen (post code 42, 158 vacancies) are part of Rc.No.91/SLPRB/Rect.2/2026 dated 16.09.2026. Driver Operators (post code 43, 147 vacancies) are in Rc.No.94/SLPRB/Rect.2/2026 dated 17.09.2026, amended by a corrigendum dated 18.09.2026 on the qualification clause. On the SLPRB Recruitments page, the column for the period of the online application is empty for every 2026 notification. Both notifications say the dates will be notified separately through a press release. No Station Fire Officer notification appears in the 2026 SLPRB list. Source: slprb.ap.gov.in, checked 7 October 2026. So no application is open as on this date.

What the department is
The department is called the State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department. The official website, fireservices.ap.gov.in, describes the Andhra Pradesh Fire Service as one of the largest fire brigade networks in India with 180 fire stations. It describes the activities as fire prevention, fire fighting, rescue and disaster response, and shows 101 as the emergency number. The website lists the A.P. Fire Service Act, 1999, the A.P. Fire Service Manual, the Fire and Emergency Operations and Levy of Fee Rules, 2006, and the A.P. Fire Subordinate Service Rules, 1992 under its Acts section.
The head of the department is the Director General. The site's frequently asked questions on fire safety certificates also mention the District Fire Officer, the Regional Fire Officer and the Director General, with the competent authority depending on the height of the building: for industrial buildings, the District Fire Officer up to 10 metres, the Regional Fire Officer between 10 and 15 metres, and the Director General above 15 metres. That is a useful reminder that the department is not only about fires. It issues fire safety clearances, handles fire attendance certificates and fire cracker permissions, and enrols volunteers.
The site's home page, as checked on 7 October 2026, carried tender notices and empanelment notices, but no recruitment notice. All recruitment to the posts discussed here is done by the SLPRB, not by the department itself.
The cadre: five categories of posts
The A.P. Fire Subordinate Service Rules, 1992 (G.O.Ms.No.568, Home (Prisons-A), 24 November 1992) are published on the department's website. The copy opened for this guide is a scanned reproduction of the rules as printed in the Civil Services Code, and the rules have been amended since, so use it to understand the structure and not as the last word on any number. The 2026 notifications, for example, print an upper age of 32 for Fireman where the original rule text said 28.
The Rules set up five categories of posts in ascending order:
| Category | Post | Method of appointment in the rules |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Fireman | 90% direct recruitment, 10% selection from eligible Home Guards |
| 4 | Driver-Operator | Direct recruitment, and promotion from Fireman, in the ratio 1:1 |
| 3 | Leading Fireman | Promotion from Fireman |
| 2 | Station Fire Officer | Direct recruitment, and promotion from Leading Fireman and Driver-Operator |
| 1 | Assistant Divisional Fire Officer | Promotion from Station Fire Officer |
The Rules also say that appointments to Station Fire Officer follow a fixed order of vacancies: the first vacancy by direct recruitment, the second by direct recruitment, the third by promotion from Leading Fireman and the fourth by promotion from Driver-Operator. In other words, out of every four Station Fire Officer vacancies, two go to direct recruits. Promotion needs at least three years of service in the feeder category. If suitable Firemen are not available for promotion to Driver-Operator, the vacancy is filled by direct recruitment.
Probation for direct recruits is two years on duty within a continuous period of three years, and one year within two years for those appointed by promotion or transfer. Training before confirmation is mandatory. The Rules give four months for Fireman and for Driver-Operator and seven months for Station Fire Officer, and describe a training in the A.P. Fire Service State Training School. The Rules also contain a condition that a direct recruit executes an agreement to serve the department for five years after training, with repayment liability if he leaves early. Since the Rules have been amended, check whether the same terms apply today before you plan your career around them.
The unit of appointment matters because it shapes how local candidates are counted. For Fireman, Leading Fireman and Driver-Operator, the original unit is the revenue district; for Station Fire Officer, it is a zone. The 2026 notifications work on the new district map, with 26 districts in the tables and the Presidential Order of 2025 for local reservation.
Fireman: what the 2026 notification says
The Fireman post is code 42 in Rc.No.91/SLPRB/Rect.2/2026, which also covers Stipendiary Cadet Trainee Police Constables (Civil and AR) and Warders. The district table prints Fireman vacancies as 158 DR and 7 LR. The headline total of 158 is the DR figure, and the LR backlog vacancies are shown separately as limited recruitment, to be filled only with local candidates of the district concerned. In the same way, the headline of 542 for Constable (Civil) is the DR figure, and 71 LR vacancies are listed beside it. The Board adds that the vacancy numbers are provisional and may change without notice.
The district-wise DR vacancies for Fireman are uneven:
| District | DR vacancies | District | DR vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| NTR City | 20 | Visakhapatnam City | 18 |
| East Godavari (Rajahmundry) | 10 | Kakinada | 10 |
| Krishna | 10 | Guntur | 10 |
| Chittoor | 8 | Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema | 7 |
| Srikakulam | 0 | Alluri Sitharama Raju | 0 |
| Annamayya | 0 | Anakapalli | 1 |
Srikakulam shows no DR vacancy but carries 2 LR backlog posts for particular communities, while Alluri Sitharama Raju and Annamayya show nothing in either column. A candidate who plans around a district should read both columns.
Eligibility. The post is for men only. The candidate must have passed Intermediate or an equivalent examination recognised by the State Government as on 1 July 2026. For SC and ST candidates, the notification accepts SSC if the candidate has studied Intermediate and appeared for the first and second year examinations. A candidate with a higher qualification is also considered. The age is 18 or more and below 32 as on 1 July 2026, which means born between 2 July 1994 and 1 July 2008. Relaxations up to five years apply to EWS, BC (non-creamy layer), SC and ST candidates, with length-of-service relaxations for state government employees (up to five years), ex-servicemen (service plus three years) and others, as printed. Medical standards include 6/6 distant vision in each eye, and colour blindness, squint, knock-knees, pigeon chest, flat feet, varicose veins, hammer toes, fractured limbs, decayed teeth, stammering and hardness of hearing are listed as disqualifying defects.
Quotas. Within direct recruitment, the special categories for the Fireman post are 10 per cent for Home Guards and 2 per cent for ex-servicemen. A Home Guard who claims the quota must be a local candidate serving as a Home Guard on the date of the notification, with at least 360 days of service in the preceding two years. That matches the structure in the Rules, where 10 per cent of Fireman posts are filled from eligible Home Guards.
Local rule. Under G.O.Ms.No.172, GA (Services-D) dated 2 September 2026, as cited in the notification, the first 5 per cent of direct recruitment posts are filled on open merit among local and non-local candidates and the remaining 95 per cent by local candidates. Local status is proved by study certificates from Class I to VII or a residence certificate issued by the Tahsildar. Our guide on local status and reservation explains how this works.
Selection. There are four stages: a preliminary written test, a physical measurement test (PMT), a physical efficiency test (PET) and a final written examination. The preliminary test is a single paper of 200 objective questions for 200 marks in three hours. The qualifying mark is 40 per cent for OC (including EWS), 35 per cent for BC and 30 per cent for SC and ST, and the marks do not count for the final selection. The PMT standard for Fireman is a height of at least 167.6 cm and a chest of at least 86.3 cm on full inspiration with 5 cm minimum expansion, relaxed to 160 cm and 80 cm with 3 cm expansion for Aboriginal ST candidates of the listed agency areas. The PET is qualifying: the 1600 metre run is compulsory, with a qualifying time of 8 minutes for general candidates and 9 minutes 30 seconds for ex-servicemen, and then one of the 100 metre run (15 seconds) or the long jump (3.80 metres). The final written examination is again 200 questions, 200 marks, three hours, and final selection is by relative merit in that paper alone, among candidates who qualified in the PET.
The syllabus for both written papers is the same, at Intermediate standard: English, arithmetic at SSC standard, reasoning and mental ability, general science, history of India with culture and the national movement, Indian geography, polity and economy, and current events. The English questions stay in English in the Telugu and Urdu versions of the paper. The Board does not prescribe any book, and the Subject Experts Committee decides disputes about questions. For the physical tests and for how the written paper is built, see the PMT and PET guide and the Police Constable guide, which share the same syllabus. The Jail Warder guide also shares this notification.
Pay. The notification prints one pay scale for the constable-level posts and Fireman: Rs 25,220 to Rs 80,910 under the revised pay scale of 2022, after successful completion of training. Employees appointed after 1 September 2004 are covered by the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Driver Operator: a different recruitment
The Driver Operator is a technical post, and the selection is built on that fact. The notification is Rc.No.94/SLPRB/Rect.2/2026 dated 17.09.2026, issued after G.O.Ms.No.81 of the Finance (HR-I Plg & Policy) Department dated 22.08.2026 sanctioned 147 posts. A press note of 17.09.2026 announced it. One detail may confuse a reader who opens the press note: the printed reference at the top of the press note reads Rc.No.91, whereas the notification itself and the Recruitments page give Rc.No.94 for the Driver Operator post. Use the notification itself for the number.
The district table prints 147 DR and 3 LR vacancies, with the DR distribution in 26 districts:
| District | DR vacancies | District | DR vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krishna | 13 | Nellore | 10 |
| Tirupati | 10 | NTR City | 9 |
| Srikakulam | 8 | East Godavari (Rajahmundry) | 8 |
| Prakasam | 8 | Sri Sathya Sai | 8 |
| Alluri Sitharama Raju | 1 | Annamayya | 1 |
The three LR backlog posts are in Srikakulam (one for ST), Visakhapatnam City (one for ST) and YSR Kadapa (one for BC-C).
Eligibility. Only men are eligible. After the corrigendum of 18.09.2026, which substituted the qualification clause, the candidate must have passed Intermediate or an equivalent examination as on 1 July 2026 and must hold a correct and clear Heavy Transport Driving Licence that has been valid for at least two years as on the date of the notification. A candidate with a higher qualification is also considered. Note that the original and amended notices differ, so read the corrigendum together with the notification. A licence that was issued last year does not meet the two-year condition, whatever your driving experience.
The age is 18 or more and below 30 as on 1 July 2026, that is, born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2008. A serving Home Guard who is local and has 360 days of service in two years gets a ceiling of 32. Relaxations are the same list as for Fireman: up to five years for EWS, BC (non-creamy layer), SC and ST, service-linked relaxations for government employees, ex-servicemen and NCC instructors. The fee is Rs 300, and Rs 150 for SC and ST local candidates.
Selection. The notification states that there is no preliminary written test for this technical post. Candidates report for certificate verification and PMT and PET, as mentioned in the hall tickets issued after registration. The stages are:
| Stage | What it is | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| PMT | Height at least 167.6 cm; chest at least 86.3 cm with 5 cm expansion | Qualifying |
| PET | 1600 metre run in 10 minutes or less | Qualifying |
| Driving test | 100 marks across eight parameters; at least 50 needed | Qualifying, not counted in merit |
| Written examination | One technical paper, 100 questions, 100 marks, three hours | Decides merit |
For Aboriginal ST candidates of the listed agency areas, the PMT standard is 164 cm height and 83.8 cm chest with 5 cm expansion. Note that the Driver Operator PET standard is gentler than for Fireman: one event, the 1600 metre run, with a limit of 10 minutes, and no 100 metre or long jump option. The 1600 metre standard for Fireman is 8 minutes.
The driving test. The notification lists eight parameters carrying a total of 100 marks, and the candidate must secure at least 50:
| Parameter | Marks |
|---|---|
| Starting a heavy transport vehicle from rest on level, up-gradient and down-gradient | 10 |
| Gear changing up and down | 10 |
| Road sense, general driving, control in all traffic conditions, steering, anticipation and judgment | 20 |
| Use of brakes, stopping, parking and reversing | 10 |
| Following road police and traffic signals | 10 |
| Minor repairs and attending to breakdown problems | 15 |
| Knowledge of motor vehicle mechanism | 15 |
| Knowledge of preventive maintenance | 10 |
A committee of officers with technical knowledge, nominated by the Chairman of the Board, conducts the test. Note how many marks are for knowledge and mechanical handling and not for driving alone: breakdown repairs (15), vehicle mechanism (15) and preventive maintenance (10) together carry 40 of the 100. A good driver who has never opened the bonnet is at risk. Because the driving test is qualifying, its marks do not enter the merit list.
The written paper. The technical paper is 100 objective questions for 100 marks in three hours, in English, Telugu and Urdu, answered on an OMR sheet. The syllabus printed in Annexure I covers maintenance responsibility and the driver's daily routine duty; daily, weekly and periodic maintenance; battery maintenance and specific gravity; tyre maintenance and rotation; fuel, ignition, lighting, brake, clutch and transmission systems; fuel accountability; dashboard instruments; canopy and seat cleaning, windscreen and wipers; minor repairs such as fan belt replacement, attending wheel punctures and air lock removal; BS-VI and older vehicles; the Motor Vehicles Act and rules; traffic signals; first aid practice; and safety precautions. Each correct answer earns one mark, and no mark is deducted for an unanswered question; the notification does not mention negative marks.
The minimum to qualify is 40 per cent for OC and EWS, 35 per cent for BC and 30 per cent for SC and ST. Final selection is by relative merit in this written paper for candidates who passed the PMT, PET and driving test. Ties go to the candidate who was born earlier. The selection list is prepared on the district preferences the candidate indicates in the application, and a district left blank is not considered. No waiting list is kept.
Pay and quota. The scale printed is Rs 32,670 to Rs 1,01,970 and a special pay of Rs 650 under the revised pay scale 2022. Two per cent of posts are for ex-servicemen, under G.O.Ms.No.176, Home (Legal-II), dated 16.09.2026. The 5 per cent open and 95 per cent local rule applies as in the Fireman notification, under G.O.Ms.No.134, GA (SPF&MC), dated 24.07.2026 for this post.
The Station Fire Officer route
The Station Fire Officer is the first officer-level post in the subordinate service, and the rules allow two ways in. One is direct recruitment: the candidate must hold a degree of a university in India (or an equivalent qualification), and, after selection, complete the training at the A.P. Fire Service State Training School. The Rules describe the training as five months at the school, one month at the central workshop on driving mechanism and pump operation, and one month of practical training in fire fighting, rescue and office procedure under a senior officer. The direct recruit must also pass the Fire Service Manual test, the Accounts Test for Subordinate Officers and a certificate course on breathing apparatus within the probation period. The other way is promotion from Leading Fireman or Driver-Operator after three years in that category, in the fixed order described above.
As on 7 October 2026, no Station Fire Officer recruitment appears among the 2026 SLPRB notifications. The press has reported earlier rounds of direct recruitment for this post through the SLPRB, with a degree as qualification and a selection of written and physical stages, but no official document for such a round was opened for this guide. If you hold a degree and want the officer route, keep your physical standard at the Fireman level, since the Rules prescribe the same height and chest for Station Fire Officer, Driver-Operator and Fireman, and watch the SLPRB page. Vacancies for this post are small because only half of the vacancies come from direct recruitment.
How the three posts compare
| Feature | Fireman | Driver Operator | Station Fire Officer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Direct, and Home Guard quota | Direct, and promotion | Direct, and promotion |
| Qualification | Intermediate | Intermediate and HTV licence | Degree |
| Preliminary written test | Yes, 200 marks (qualifying) | No | Not notified in 2026 |
| Physical | PMT and PET (1600 m and one more event) | PMT and 1600 m in 10 minutes | Same height and chest in the Rules |
| Extra test | None | Driving test, 100 marks, qualifying | Not notified in 2026 |
| Merit decided by | Final written paper, 200 marks | Technical paper, 100 marks | Not notified in 2026 |
| Next step up | Driver Operator, Leading Fireman | Station Fire Officer | Assistant Divisional Fire Officer |
Preparing for the Fireman route
The Fireman written test is a general paper, so the preparation is the same as for the constable posts, with the physical effort given equal weight because the PET is a gate.
- Start the running base first. The 1600 metre run in 8 minutes needs a pace of 5 minutes per kilometre or better, and the run is compulsory for every candidate. Our PMT and PET guide has a 60-day plan, injury advice and a test-day checklist.
- Measure yourself early. Height cannot be changed, and chest expansion can be improved only a little. Check your height and chest against the PMT standard before you invest months in preparation, and note that the notification says measurements are recorded digitally with the candidate standing upright.
- Prepare the written paper in layers. Reasoning and arithmetic are scoring and trainable. English is a section where the question stays in English in every language version. General science, history, geography, polity and economy need steady reading. Current events need a monthly habit. Our AP GK top 100 questions and current affairs study guide can anchor this.
- Use mock papers. The qualifying marks are 40 per cent for OC, but the final merit is decided by the 200-mark paper alone, so each mark matters for rank.
- Learn the basics of fire. The syllabus does not list fire science, so this is background, not exam content. It helps with interviews, training and the job. The Rules list the training subjects: theory covers fire prevention, fire extinction, sciences and general matters, and practical work covers squad drill, ladders and rescue work, pumps and primers, breathing apparatus and artificial respiration, chemical extinguishers, knots and lines, flood rescue, hose, stirrup pump, hydrants and salvage, a standard test, and fire fighting equipment and its uses. Reading the names of these sections gives you a sense of what the four months of training involve.
Preparing for the Driver Operator route
A Driver Operator candidate has two preparations running in parallel: the driving test and the technical paper.
| Weeks | Written paper | Driving test |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Read the Annexure I topics as a checklist; mark what you know | Confirm licence validity and date; list vehicles you can practise on |
| 3 to 5 | Engine, fuel, ignition, lighting systems | Starting on gradients, gear changes, parking and reversing |
| 6 to 8 | Brakes, clutch, transmission, tyres, battery | Minor repairs: puncture, fan belt, air lock |
| 9 to 10 | Motor Vehicles Act, traffic signals, first aid | Signals, road sense, observation |
| 11 to 12 | Timed mock papers of 100 questions in 90 minutes | Mock driving test with a scoring sheet |
Practise the driving test with the marks table in front of you. Self-score each parameter out of its maximum, and look for the two or three where you lose the most. For most candidates the gaps are in breakdown repairs and preventive maintenance, since those do not come from everyday driving. A mechanic or an experienced driver who knows a heavy vehicle can teach the routine checks that the syllabus mentions: battery water level and specific gravity, tyre pressure and rotation, brake adjustment, air lock removal, fuel accounting and the dashboard instruments.
Keep two practical points in mind. First, the written paper decides merit while the driving test only qualifies, so do not trade study time for extra driving once you can pass the driving test comfortably. Second, since the PET is a 10-minute 1600 metre run, which is slower than the Fireman standard, a driver who has not run for years can still prepare in a few weeks; but do not underestimate it.
The application and documents
Both notifications are online only, at slprb.ap.gov.in. The fee is paid first through the gateway, and then the application form is submitted; if the form is not submitted after payment, the application is rejected and the fee is not refunded. In the Fireman notification, one application form covers the different post codes of that notification, and the Driver Operator notification builds its selection list on the district preferences the candidate indicates. Age validation is not done in the online form, so the candidate is responsible for age eligibility. Under-age and over-age applicants are rejected without a refund.
Original documents, with one attested photocopy set, are verified at the PMT and PET. For Driver Operator, the list includes the study certificates (Class I to VII) or residence certificate, the SSC certificate for the date of birth, the educational qualification, the heavy transport driving licence, and, where applicable, EWS and non-creamy layer certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026, community certificates (for SC, the certificate under the sub-classification ordinance), the Home Guard certificate, and the ex-servicemen certificate. The Board says that no further certificate is accepted at a later stage. Start collecting the documents now, especially certificates that take time.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Expecting a preliminary test for Driver Operator | There is none; the PMT comes first | Prepare physical and technical work together |
| Assuming the Fireman and Driver Operator PET are the same | Fireman: 8 minutes plus one more event. Driver Operator: 10 minutes, one event | Read the standard for your post |
| Applying with a licence under two years old | The condition is two years validity on the date of notification | Check the date on your licence |
| Ignoring the corrigendum | It substituted the qualification clause | Read the notification and corrigendum together |
| Skipping vehicle mechanics | 40 of 100 driving test marks are for repairs, mechanism and maintenance | Practise breakdown and maintenance work |
| Reading only the headline vacancy | Districts differ; some show 0 DR | Read the district table |
| Trusting forwarded dates | No application dates are published | Check slprb.ap.gov.in |

Does the driving test count for merit? No. It is qualifying in nature, with a minimum of 50 of 100 marks.
Is the Fireman recruitment the same as the police constable recruitment? They are in the same notification and share the preliminary test and the final written test syllabus, but the posts, vacancies and rules are separate, and the Fireman PMT lists only the men's standard.
Is a Station Fire Officer recruitment open? No Station Fire Officer notification appears in the 2026 SLPRB list. Under the service rules, the post is filled both by direct recruitment and by promotion.
What is the career path after Fireman? Under the service rules, Fireman can be promoted to Driver-Operator or Leading Fireman, and then to Station Fire Officer, with at least three years in the feeder category. Check the current rules for any change.
Where do I check for updates? The SLPRB website, slprb.ap.gov.in, for notifications, corrigenda and press releases. The department website fireservices.ap.gov.in does not carry the recruitment.
