GANDHINAGAR, August 4 — The death toll due to the Chandipura virus (CHPV) outbreak in Gujarat rose to 22 on Tuesday, with the health department confirming new cases in rural areas of the state.

The health department reported that the fatalities occurred primarily among children under 15 years who developed acute encephalitis syndrome. Fogging operations and sandfly dusting drives have been expanded to cover over 500 high-risk villages.

Medical teams are conducting door-to-door screenings to identify children with high fever and joint pain, facilitating immediate transport to district hospital isolation wards.

Candidates preparing for competitive exams should note the transmission vector of the Chandipura virus (sandflies of the Phlebotomus genus) and that the virus belongs to the Vesiculovirus genus of the family Rhabdoviridae.
