GANDHINAGAR, August 4 — The Gujarat health department reported 35 confirmed cases and several fatalities linked to the Chandipura virus (CHPV) during the ongoing monsoon season.

The virus, which primarily affects children under the age of 15, is transmitted by sandflies and mosquitoes. Symptoms include high fever, vomiting, and acute encephalitis. Local administrations have started vector control measures, including dusting with malathion powder and spraying insecticides in affected rural areas.

Health officials have urged parents to seek immediate medical attention if children show symptoms, emphasizing that early diagnosis is critical for effective treatment.

Health and science topics are regularly featured in competitive exams. Candidates should know that the Chandipura virus belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family, was first isolated in Maharashtra in 1965, and is primarily transmitted by the female Phlebotomine sandfly.
