NEW DELHI, August 4 — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reported on Tuesday that 274 fugitive criminals have been extradited or deported back to India from 36 different countries between 2019 and 2026.
According to government data, the extraditions were made possible through bilateral extradition treaties, mutual legal assistance treaties (MLAT), and closer cooperation with Interpol. The extradited individuals include those wanted for financial fraud, organized crime, and national security offences.
The ministry stated that negotiations are active with several other nations to sign new extradition treaties and simplify repatriation procedures for economic offenders.
Extradition laws and treaties are standard topics in general awareness sections. Candidates should know that extradition is governed by the Indian Extradition Act, 1962, and the Ministry of External Affairs acts as the central authority for processing requests.
