NEW DELHI, August 7 — India celebrated its 12th National Handloom Day on Friday, August 7, holding exhibitions and events across the country to honour the weaving community and promote handloom products.
First launched in 2015, the day is observed to raise awareness about the handloom industry's contribution to socio-economic development and to protect traditional craftsmanship. The date, August 7, was chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was formally launched on this day in 1905 at the Calcutta Town Hall to promote domestic production and boycott foreign goods.
The Ministry of Textiles organized special credit schemes, design workshops, and awards ceremonies for weavers during the national event.
National initiatives and historical movements form a regular part of competitive exam syllabi. Candidates should know that National Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7 to mark the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905.
