NEW DELHI, October 5 — The Registry of the Supreme Court of India has published the official notification for the Advocate-on-Record (AOR) Examination scheduled to be conducted from December 15 to December 18, 2026, under Rule 5 of Order IV of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013.

The professional examination comprises four descriptive papers: Practice and Procedure of the Supreme Court, Drafting, Advocacy and Professional Ethics, and Leading Cases. Eligible advocates must have completed at least four years of continuous practice before a High Court or subordinate courts followed by one year of mandatory training under an approved Senior Advocate-on-Record. The online registration portal accepts submissions through October 15, 2026.

An Advocate-on-Record is the exclusive legal practitioner entitled under statutory rules to act, plead, and file appearances on behalf of litigants in the Supreme Court of India. Qualifying thresholds require candidates to secure a minimum of 50% marks in each individual paper and a cumulative aggregate of 60%.

Supreme Court administrative rulemaking, constitutional powers under Article 145, and the hierarchy of legal practitioners are key themes in Judicial Services and UPSC GS Paper II (Judiciary). Candidates should note that under Article 145 of the Constitution of India, the Supreme Court is empowered, with the approval of the President, to make rules regulating the court's overall practice and procedure.
