NEW DELHI, October 6 — The Ministry of Education on Tuesday announced the inclusion of two new ranking categories—'Sustainable Campus' and 'Open Universities'—alongside overhauled assessment weightages for the upcoming eleventh edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2026).
Under the revised methodology notified by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), the newly instituted 'Sustainable Campus' category will assess higher educational institutions on environmental stewardship metrics, encompassing net-zero greenhouse gas abatement, rooftop solar generation, water recycling efficiencies, hazardous waste neutralization, and green architectural design. Furthermore, the 'Innovation' vertical has been harmonized with the erstwhile Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA), prioritizing patent monetization, deep-tech research commercialization, and registered student venture incubation.
Higher Education Department officials noted that these qualitative revisions align institutional incentives directly with the transformative multidisciplinary mandates outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The centralized data submission portal for participating universities, engineering colleges, and medical institutes will formally open during the first week of November 2026.
The institutional framework of NIRF, the five foundational assessment pillars (Teaching, Learning & Resources; Research & Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach & Inclusivity; and Perception), and NEP 2020 structural reforms represent high-frequency questions in UGC-NET Paper-I and UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: Social Justice & Education). Aspirants should note that NIRF was officially launched on September 29, 2015, by the Ministry of Education to establish a sovereign, transparent, and reproducible ranking metric for Indian higher learning institutions.
