HYDERABAD, October 9 — Bharat Biotech International Limited in collaborative partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Friday unveiled landmark results from nationwide Phase-3 clinical efficacy trials for India’s first indigenously engineered Chikungunya and tetravalent Dengue vaccines.
Data presented by ICMR leadership during a joint briefing revealed that the Chikungunya candidate demonstrated a 98.4 percent seroprotection rate and robust cellular immunogenicity across 10,500 clinical volunteers evaluated across 22 trial sites. Concurrently, the tetravalent Dengue vaccine—engineered to stimulate neutralizing antibodies against all four dengue serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4)—achieved 86 percent protective efficacy against severe disease and hospitalization.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed that regulatory dossiers have been lodged with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) seeking formal market authorization from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). The breakthrough marks a transformative advancement in tropical neglected disease therapeutics, dramatically curtailing high seasonal morbidity loads across endemic urban clusters.
Vector-borne epidemiology (Aedes aegypti transmission cycles), statutory regulation under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules 2019, the institutional mandate of ICMR (established in 1911), and vaccine architectures (tetravalent recombinant vs live attenuated platforms) are staple topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-II: Public Health & GS-III: Biotechnology). Candidates should review the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) and Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).
