NEW DELHI, October 9 — The Union Cabinet on Friday sanctioned a dedicated ₹4,440 crore incentive package under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) program of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, targeting commercial production of 1.5 lakh metric tonnes per annum of Green Ammonia and 1 lakh metric tonnes per annum of Green Methanol.
Under the operational guidelines released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), public and private aggregators across chemical fertilizers, marine bunkering, and steel manufacturing sectors will be eligible for performance-indexed tapering financial incentives over a three-year commercial execution horizon to bridge the price differential against conventional fossil fuel-derived feedstocks.
The Union Government confirmed that the transition will abate approximately 500,000 metric tonnes of annual CO2 emissions while displacing over ₹18,000 crore worth of imported natural gas and feedstock shipments. Concurrently, maritime green hydrogen hubs are being operationalized at V.O. Chidambaranar (Thoothukudi), Deendayal (Kandla), and Paradip major ports to position Indian coastal clusters as prime bunkering locations under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decarbonization roadmap.
The regulatory architecture of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (sanctioned in 2023 with a ₹19,744 crore outlay), the SIGHT financial disbursement mechanisms, India's Panchamrit climate commitments (achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070 and 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030), and hydrogen production physics (electrolysis of water via proton exchange membrane and alkaline electrolyzers) are core syllabus topics across UPSC Civil Services (GS-III: Renewable Energy and Climate Change).
